Nationals Designate Tim Collins

By Jeff Todd | July 4, 2018 at 8:24am CDT

The Nationals have designated lefty Tim Collins for assignment, per a club announcement. His roster spot was needed for the activation of Matt Adams from the 10-day DL.

With the Nats stuck in a brutal run of poor results, they’ll sacrifice some bullpen depth in order to increase their offensive options with the return of Adams. The first baseman had been on the shelf after suffering a minor finger fracture on a bunt attempt.

Collins, 28, has worked to a 2.77 ERA in his 13 innings on the year — his first frames in the bigs since way back in 2014. Unfortunately, he has also managed only eight strikeouts while issuing six walks.

There were some positive signs, too. Collins is working at 93.1 mph with his fastball, right near his career average, and has managed an 11.2% swinging-strike rate. He has been tagged by righties (.455 wOBA) but been equally dominant against lefties (.191 wOBA).

For the Nats, there were simply more pressing needs than another lefty reliever. With Matt Grace on hand and Sammy Solis in reserve at Triple-A, there are other options. Plus, the club could conceivably mix and match in the late innings rather than using southpaw Sean Doolittle exclusively as a closer. Whether another team will value Collins as a MLB roster piece remains to be seen; if not, perhaps he could end up back at Triple-A in the D.C. organization.

If Dayton doesn’t make this happen, I’ll be heartbroken. Tiny Tim needs to come back!

GMDM is the kind of guy to bring a guy back. Plus, I mean, the KC bullpen is a trainwreck so why not add another car to the tracks?

Will definitely be claimed. Hope he falls to the Braves to replace Sam Freeman.

Because he won’t take up much room on the plane, he is the kind of guy you want to sit next to in the seats.

This gave me a good laugh. Timmy has always gotten outs though even if peripheral numbers aren’t crazy about him.

Should probably be traded before being placed on waivers.

I could see the Padres being very interested via waivers if he falls to them. They have gone on a little skid as of late and should be close to the top in waiver priority. A veteran left hander out of the pen to step in for the eventual departures of 1 if not 3 of Hand, Yates or Stammen. Can’t just have a bunch of kids down in the pen only.

Not to mention he came up through the royals system with Hosmer and Myers, so they could clamor to get Preller to snag him.

I could see the Pirates being interested in this guy as they need another lefthander in the bullpen. He seems to be a little too good to be placed on waivers.

      He shouldn’t go on waivers.

At least 20 teams ought to offer a live body, or more than the waiver fee, to add him.

      Who will offer the most?

I agree, he’s a much better option than Freeman.

More of a quad A guy but loved him with the Royals. Still would manage to be upgrade on even some playoff hopeful bullpens. Definitely will be claimed and hope he gets a solid shot. Pads have had great success with waiver pen arms. Cleveland’s pen could use another arm. Braves fans would probably love to see Freeman or Moylan ousted for Collins. Plenty of rebuilding teams might hope to catch lightening in a bottle since he still has youth on his side.
