Trade Rumors: Andujar, Padres, Cards, J. Martinez, Rangers, Reds

By Connor Byrne | July 20, 2018 at 9:15am CDT

The Yankees were involved in the Manny Machado sweepstakes before the Dodgers acquired him from the Orioles this week, though adding him wouldn’t have led New York to trade rookie third baseman Miguel Andujar. Rather, the Yankees simply would have platooned Andujar at first base or sent him down to the minors while Machado played third, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required). The bottom line is that the Yankees “have no plans to trade Andujar,” writes Rosenthal, who adds that they recently turned down the Padres when they asked for the 23-year-old in exchange for reliever Brad Hand. San Diego ended up sending Hand to Cleveland in a blockbuster deal on Thursday.

More trade-related material as the July 31 non-waiver deadline approaches…

  • Thanks in large part to his defensive shortcomings, Cardinals first baseman Jose Martinez is seemingly shifting toward a part-time role. As a result, the Cardinals could trade the 29-year-old – perhaps for a left-handed reliever or lefty-hitting position player – Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes. If the Cardinals are going to deal Martinez anywhere, it’ll likely be to a team in the American League, where he’d be able to work as a designated hitter. But it doesn’t seem the Redbirds are going to trade Martinez for Orioles southpaw reliever Zach Britton, whom they’re not pursuing, according to Goold. Since debuting in earnest last year, Martinez has been a minus defender in the outfield and at first base. He has done his best to offset that with his bat, though, having slashed .303/.372/.497 with 27 home runs in 663 plate appearances.
  • Sticking with the Cardinals, it doesn’t appear they’re going to move out any pitchers prior to the deadline. Top starter Carlos Martinez has come up in trade speculation, though president of baseball operations John Mozeliak indicated to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com and other reporters on Thursday that the team won’t be subtracting from its staff. “For us, the one core we have is pitching,” Mozeliak said. “And to start trying to arbitrage that would have to be a very special-type deal, otherwise it would make no sense to us. None of that has presented itself to me. No one has called me with any great ideas that way. One of the responsibilities is us looking at potential trades, potential partners, but nothing that I’ve looked at would make sense in that regard. I don’t envision us moving pitching.”
  • The Rangers won’t be trading pending free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre “unless circumstances change drastically,” TR Sullivan of MLB.com writes. Despite Beltre’s age (39), Texas would like to re-sign the franchise great. Beltre, for his part, is a 10-and-5 player who’d be able to block any trade. Meanwhile, fellow aging Ranger Bartolo Colon isn’t drawing much trade interest, Sullivan reports. The 45-year-old has been a serviceable addition for Texas (4.64 ERA, 5.23 K/9, 1.43 BB/9 in 106 2/3 innings), though he’s not going to move the needle for a contender. Infielder/outfielder Jurickson Profar would likely garner attention on the market, on the other hand, and Sullivan doesn’t close the door on the Rangers dealing him. The former star prospect, 25, is amid his best season, having hit .243/.326/.430 with nine home runs, eight steals and just 46 strikeouts in 350 plate appearances. Profar has produced those numbers on a low salary ($1.05MM) and still has two more years of arbitration eligibility left.
  • Reds relievers Raisel Iglesias, Amir Garrett, David Hernandez and Jared Hughes are “in demand” around the league, according to Jon Paul Morosi of MLB.com. Whether the Reds are interested in dealing any of those pitchers is unclear, especially considering all four are controllable beyond this season and the team may push toward contending in 2019. Iglesias was already a hot commodity entering 2018, while Garrett has performed well in his first season as a reliever, and both Hernandez and Hughes have been quality free-agent pickups for Cincy.

    “Unless circumstances change drastically”

What circumstances need to change for the Rangers? They aren’t winning. Just trade him and sign him in the winter.

Trade him for anything. Get a mid-level prospect, bring him back in the offseason.

You’re not getting a top 100 guy out of him, obviously, but it’s better than nothing.

The point is, Beltre doesn’t want to go anywhere. He’s happy where he is, and unless Beltre goes up to management and says “I want to go here” they won’t even bother persuing it, especially if no one is offering anything of significance for him.

The Reds should keep them all and plan to pursue at least one quality starter this winter. They are very close to contending next season and other than Harvey should not make any meaningful trades before the deadline.

They need to trade Gennett. The guy has a ton of trade value, could bring back a nice piece or two, and it would open the door for Senzel next year. As good as Gennett has been, the Reds need to find room in next year’s lineup for their top prospect.

I don’t believe that’s a necessity for the Reds at all. Senzel is out for this season and will need some minor league time next year to prove he’s ready. Keep Gennett and trade him next year once Senzel forces the issue or injuries do the same.

He’ll get a couple weeks in the minors next year.

You don’t keep Gennett during a lost season because you’re worried about the first 2-3 weeks of next season. You trade him when his value is at it’s peak- provided the return is meaningful – and you treat the first 2-3 weeks of next year as if your starting 2B is on the DL.

Assuming Senzel is ready in 2-3 weeks, which is not a given. You have a winning team on the field, you keep Senzel in the minors until he forces the team into a move. There would be nothing wrong with Gennett as the super sub if Senzel forces his way into the lineup. A trade just to make a trade is a bad move. What about injuries? If the Reds are winning, Senzel can bide his time in the minors.

I would go the opposite direction. Scooter has proven to be a top quality mlb player and is still young. Senzel is an unproven prospect, though a very good one. I would keep Gennett and sign him to an extension and use Senzel as the headliner in a trade for a young stud starting pitcher. The Reds have a logjam of infield prospects and a very solid infield at the mlb level. Their needs are starting pitching and outfield upgrades.

The guy will be 30 next year. The Reds aren’t going to suddenly vault ahead of the Cubs and Brewers in the next two years – even if they were able to get a young stud for Senzel (which, for what it’s worth, is very unlikely)

There is no need to trade either of them. I believe the Reds can sign a pitcher or two and win next year; following that Scooter walks or can be traded if the right deal comes along.

It is an easy call, if some team offers you a stud in the top 30 MLB prospects, trade him. If not keep him, put Senzel in RF, try to resign Harvey, and they have to sign a pitcher the ilk of Gio Gonzalez.

How about this trade from a Red Sox fan.?
Jackie Bradley and Brian Johnson for Billy Hamilton and Jared Hughes or David Hernandez. Obviously they would like Iglesias, but I don’t think that gets it done.
I think both Bradley and Hamilton need a change of scenery. Bradley is controllable for two more years, compared to Hamilton’s one. Also, defense is similar but power potential is greater.
Hamilton becomes the Red Sox 4th. outfielder and stolen base threat in the later innings.
Reds get a lefty for their rotation with major league experience and controllable. Red Sox get a controllable reliever for the stretch run.
          What do think?

Where are you getting your info? Senzel has put up good numbers pretty much from day one. He needs to be tried in the outfield though. The fans love Scooter. He is a local guy who puts butts in the seats. This team is only a few pieces away from competing for a Wild Card next year. They finally have great chemistry, there’s no reason to break that up.

Cubs fans often said the same things about their young players… Not only were they better off keeping them, but young bats aren’t as valuable as younger arms. So Senzel isn’t bringing you a stud by himself. It would take quite a bit more.

The last thing they need to do is trade Gennett. He’s been a huge part of the turnaround and is a local kid and a fan favorite. Trading him would only serve in alienating a fan base they’re just starting to win back.

I also believe his trade value is overstated. Yes there are teams interested in him but no one is going to be willing to give them value for him equal to what he’s producing both on and off the field.

They should stand pat with what they have now and play out the season. Get a better understanding of what exactly their needs are. But definitely acquire a front end starting pitcher. They could possibly even flip Senzel to do that if they can’t find a natural, easy fit for him in the lineup.

Who cares if he’s a fan favorite if he can bring pitching in return? He’s terrible with the glove so he needs to be able to handle LF, and with his shoulder that’s an iffy proposition. I like Scooter, and would be open to a 3 year deal or so but Senzel is a franchise player in waiting. Only deal him if, and only if, you can get a legitimate top of rotation guy who’s under control for a few seasons like Thor. And I’m all for looking into someone like Keuchel in the off-season. He’s a good mid rotation guy, my only fear is how long of a deal he’ll want since he’s 30 already.

If his trade value proves to be overstated, then obviously don’t trade him. You have to get something meaningful in return.

But you don’t turn down something meaningful for a 29-year old 2B when your top prospect is blocked in the minors due to a logjam of infielders. And you certainly don’t block your top prospect because he’s a “fan favorite”. You know what fan bases like more than a home town kid? A winning team. And getting something meaningful for Gennett during a lost season that also allows you to play your top prospect next season gets you closer to that.

That’s the point he won’t get you pitching worth having in return. There isn’t a huge demand for second basemen in the market. And the reason why you care that he’s a fan favorite is you need attendance numbers in that market to help bolster your revenue. If the Reds alienate their fans they won’t have the money to make the moves they need to make in order to improve. That’s why you care!

Most players prime years are 28-30 years old. Scooter just turned 28. I would see what offers are out there but if you don’t plan on contending next year then you trade him if the right offer comes along. After next year, he will start trending downward. He is being mentioned in the MVP talk, so I would take a strong offer now for him. As a Orioles fan, I wish we would have traded Britton,in 2016, when he was Cy young candidate and had the incredible year.

The Reds have gone 23-16 since June so they might be better than we think. Also, I can see making a core out of Suarez, Gennette, Shcebler, Peraza to build on rather than trade and set a competitive window later. However, relievers are too volatile and after seeing some of those FIPs in your relievers, even Iglesias, you should trade him and set your sites on 2019.

There is a big difference between the Yankees trading Andujar for Hand and Cleveland trading Mejia for him. Hand would be a luxury for the Yankees but not worth trading their starting 3rd baseman for. The Indians bullpen has been dreadful this year. If any contender needed the best reliever on the market it was them. Very few teams would be willing to trade a prospect like Mejia for Hand. San Diego happened to find one in Cleveland. Also, if Andujar was playing in AAA instead of being a rookie of the year candidate and the Yankees had a clear need for a backend bullpen arm he would be available for sure. Comparing the 2 scenarios are apples 2 oranges.

The few articles I read said that even after Severino’s horrible softmore season several teams were trying to acquire him and Cashman said he wasn’t available. They blamed his season on conditioning and weight. And he was right. The following offseason he put the weight back on and went back to his original offseason workout regimen and his velocity returned.

Glad padres didnt get andujar. They have no room on the roster for him. Hosmer is at 1st. Andujar possibly isnt gonna stick at 3rd. Idk how he is in the of or if hes played there.

They got a high upside offensive player. Hopefully he can stick at catcher.

3B is a black hole for us. Tatis is looking like he will stick around at SS which is huge for value. We need a bug bat at 3B. Maybe we sign Donaldson in the off-season to a 2 year deal. Keep the seat warm for Potts. But he may not even be ready for 3-4 years. Who are some money ready 3b we could trade for? Austin Riley?

You could chase after eduardo escobar but his price tag may be too rich. You could also sign jordy mercer and try him at 3rd.

Or you could see about a jedd gyorko reunion

If you wanted to make a statement. Go out and acquire eugenio suarez from the reds to play 3rd long term. 5 years 55 mill owed.

        Quantril, Morejon, Ruiz, Ona, Gettys.

The Yankees will probably let Brandon Drury go for a mid level prospect and a lottery ticket. He will give you all the time you need for Ruiz/Potts to get ready. Campusano and Wingenter should be enough. Cashman is probably already pestering Preller for Wingenter. He seems to have a thing for 6’7” players. He already has half a basketball team with Bentances, Stanton and Judge. CC just misses at 6’6”.

You only make a trade if you get an equal return. There is no one available equal to Andujar. Period.

Perhaps Judge Judy meant that the Yankees might not have viewed Hand, primarily in a set up bullpen role, as equal value to Andujar, a regular infielder that will play 140+ games.
I don’t agree and would have made that trade. If the Yankees can’t get front-line starter, shortening the game to get to their bullpen would be sound strategy.
I think Andujar has reached his ceiling, and with Chapman having a balky knee lately, Hand might have been a good insurance option as closer, but all opinions are welcomed!

It depends on what you value, a infielder that plays 140+ games or a front of the line starter (severino) cause the yankees were willing to give up him for kimbrel a couple years back

I agree somewhat with you Rocky. The only reason I wouldn’t trade Andujar for Hand is that Andujar is their starting 3rd baseman. I do agree that he should be traded this offseason (or at the deadline if they can pick up someone like Moustakas to replace him) while his value is sky high. They have Robertson ready to step in at closer if Chapman needs time off. The only benefit I can see to them getting Hand is that he is a lefty. The one area they need improvement in their bullpen. They can pick up a shutdown lefty for quite a bit less than Andujar though. Hand is definitely worth the type of player Andujar is. It’s just to the Yankees Andujar holds more value and trading him would open up a position of need unless they have enough confidence in Drury to perform as well as Andujar has. Yankee fans are fickle and if Drury doesn’t cut it there will be outrage focused on Cashman for trading Andujar to fill a small hole that could have been filled with lesser players.

Why do you make up things like this constantly? I doubt Andujar’s mom would rather have him over Mike Trout. You should at least try to make BS sound somewhat believable. Like some Yankee fan said they would rather have Andujar than Kyle Schwarber. I completely made that up because every Yankee fan wants to see that bat in Yankee Stadium, yet it is still believable. Yours is absolute nonsense and nobody would ever say it.

I thought the possibility of trading Martinez would be smart. He is full of potential and unfortunately that is all he will ever be. First game back from the break, you play the first place team. Your ace gets touched for 5 earned in 5 innings. That’s not ace material.

hope for Martinez’s sake he does get traded, his defense definitely leaves a lot to be desired but I love watching his ABs, dude is an animal and like so many players his productivity is at it’s best with regular playing time, the thought of him wasting away on the bench just kills me.
Regarding Gennett- regardless of whether anyone thinks he should be traded or not the Reds FO clearly seems to be in the mindset that he’s a building block of the next few years. Personally I’m split on the issue, though if Senzel is going to be the 2B of the immediate future I would think his production should at least match what Gennett is achieving, which is a tall order for anyone in the league. In other words, unless the Reds are presented with a trade scenario that would be ridiculous and/or disgraceful to refuse they should just hold on to him, being a hometown product it’s a great situation from a morale standpoint anyway

JOSE MARTINEZ to FLORIDA MARLINS makes a world of sense to me !! – as a combo 1st Baseman with Justin Bour who has solid power but is definitely inconsistent at the plate. JETER and HILL Take Notice, especially if you’re trading relievers of which the Cards are very much in need of !! plus JOSE makes the minimum….a Bargain anyway you look at it.

Where do you think yankees fans think machado would have played if the acquired him? Outfield? I dont see a fit now or next year, harper makes more sense as he is open to playing first or outfield. Machado only wants to play ss and yanks have didi and torreys and andujar all relatively cheap compared to what machado will command.

also i see nyy biggest weakness is pitching both starters and pen could use help as far as there line up it’s pretty solid up and down on both offensively and defensively imo getting manny would been more of a side ways move than an improvement

The Padres need to seek out a third base prospect– Hudson Potts probably isn’t close enough to be ready. Any chance that Chavis or Dalbec would be gettable from Boston for a package likely based around Tyson Ross and/or Kirby Yates?

Yes Mozeliak, we believe you when saying there probably isn’t a chance you’ll move either one of the Martinez Brothers ( kidding on the bros statement) but to say your not interested in Zack Britton as a relief pitcher is s joke. You need to do all you can to improve the Cards line up and no one is safe from a trade currently on this roster except for Yadi, DeJong and maybe Carp…. improvement is needed everywhere on this team.
