AL Injury Notes: Didi, Trumbo, A. Garcia, Joyce

By Connor Byrne | August 19, 2018 at 4:35pm CDT

Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius exited the team’s game Sunday with a “pretty significant” heel bruise and could be headed for the disabled list, manager Aaron Boone told Lindsay Adler of The Athletic and other reporters. He’d be the third integral member of the Yankees’ offense on the DL, joining right fielder Aaron Judge and catcher Gary Sanchez, with the Bombers trying to hold off the AL West runner-up (Houston, Oakland or Seattle) for homefield advantage in this year’s wild-card round. New York has a 3 1/2-game edge on that spot and a seven-game lead on a playoff position, thanks in part to Gregorius – who has slashed .270/.333/.482 (116 wRC+) with 22 home runs and 4.0 fWAR in 507 plate appearances. Replacing Gregorius would be a difficult task, then, and second baseman Gleyber Torres stands out as the Yankees’ top in-house option if the former does hit the DL. Torres has struggled mightily in the second half of his rookie year, though, and moving him off the keystone would force the Yankees to find a different starter there – perhaps Neil Walker (who has handled right field of late), Ronald Torreyes or Tyler Wade. Of course, New York could still bolster its lineup via trade this month, which it may feel compelled to do should Gregorius require a lengthy absence.

A few more injury notes from the AL…

  • Orioles designated hitter Mark Trumbo is “likely” going to the DL on account of right knee inflammation, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com tweets. Trumbo revealed in May that he has arthritis in that knee, though it hasn’t stopped him from posting fairly typical numbers in 2018. The 32-year-old has recorded a 106 wRC+, matching his career figure, across 355 PAs. That’s not an inspiring mark, however, and combining Trumbo’s so-so production with his knee problems and remaining salary may make it all but impossible for the rebuilding Orioles to trade him. Trumbo will earn $13.5MM in 2019, the final season of a three-year, $37.5MM contract that hasn’t worked out for Baltimore thus far.
  • As with Trumbo, White Sox right fielder Avisail Garcia is battling his own right knee issues, Tom Musick of the Chicago Sun-Times explains. The plan is for Garcia to undergo arthroscopic surgery in the offseason, per Musick, but even though the White Sox are well out of contention, they don’t plan on shutting him down for 2018. This has already been an abbreviated campaign for Garcia, who missed nearly two months from April to June because of a hamstring strain. Perhaps thanks in part to his injury issues, the 27-year-old has slashed a disappointing .234/.264/.451 (90 wRC+) in 250 PAs after thriving in 2017. Garcia is slated to go through arbitration for the final time over the winter.
  • Athletics outfielder Matt Joyce, who hasn’t played since July 4 because of a back strain, will rejoin the team when rosters expand in September, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Joyce will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday, though Slusser suggests that playing time could be limited for the 34-year-old when he does return to Oakland. After offering solid production over the previous couple years, Joyce has batted just .203/.311/.359 (87 wRC+) in 226 PAs this season, and the A’s have been on a tear without him.

Torres to SS, Torreyes/Walker split 2B, Walker/Robinson (oy vey) split RF. Hopefully Stanton’s hamstring is fine enough to play RF in Miami in Tuesday’s & Wednesday

I dread the thought of a ball popping out of Glaybar’s glove at 2nd, most of the time now, let alone starting a double play filling in for DiDi, and a big Oy Veh on that too lol!! Whenever I see a ball thrown to him. he either drops it or gets brain freeze.
Poor DiDi, he finally gets out of that horrific slump, now this!!
I have a lot of faith in Torreyes and Walker, but sure they will all be playing musical chairs in the infield.

Yes, Gleybar does not yet seem to have the tools or makeup—yet—to be a good defender.

And why did people start spelling it that way? Might as well call the Braves’ star rookie Ronaldo Acana.

Funny…but a little far fetched. The Red Sox are headed for a crash in one, max. two years They’re losing a lot of major league talent, and they’ve traded away the guys who could’ve taken their place.

I doubt they’re top 10 in the majors, in controllable talent. And the Yanks are no. 1, easy.

Yankees should pick up Daniel Murphy who was just placed on revocable waivers by the Nationals. He is hitting .300 this year. That way the Yankees can have a solid second baseman while DiDi is out. Then when he comes back, you move Murphy to first. Murphy should platoon with Bird at first so that he can get his reps. That would allow Walker to play some second once in a while.

what contract are you stuck with he is a FA after the season. He is only owed the prorated of this year. Not sure the space left before luxury but i think Murphy would be a good pickup and you can move on from walker.

I think you would put Torreyes at short keep gleyber at 2nd and put stanton in right with bird and murphy splitting first base / dh. Murphy can spell Gleyber on certain days, Gleyber can spell Torreyes if needed with murphy sliding over to 2nd on those days. When any of the big names come back you can send bird down for some more seasoning and move stanton back to dh if judge is back or sanchez at dh / 1b split with murphy. If didi comes back first Torreyes goes back to bench.

Just because someone gets placed on waivers in the NL, doesn”t mean that the team with the second best record in baseball can pick him up…..in fact, it would require 28 teams refusing to pick him up, before the Yanks got their shot,…which is never going to happen.

It’s really amazing to me that they have the 2nd best record in the majors with a sloppy, patchwork rotation that had to endure Sonny Gray, lengthy injuries and awful performances from Bird and Sanchez, an atrocious stretch from their ace, an extended DL stint from Judge, and a terrible start from Stanton.

I mean, they don’t have a single player hitting over .300 nor a starting pitcher with an ERA under 3.28.

Not sure what the Yankees aversion to Ronald Torreyes is. He filled in more than adequately for the first month of last season when Didi was hurt.

Keep walker in right, Torres right where he is, and let Ronald play short.

Lets see the extent of the injury. If he’s on the DL for the minimum then there is no need to make a move. And if Judge and Sanchez get back they may not need to make a move either. They survived DiDIs disastrous May and June buy having the beat record in baseball. So if they can get healthy in the next week or so I dont see a need to make a drastic move.

          Here’s something to consider:

The number of games that the A’s, Astro’s and Mariners get to beat each other up in the next five weeks.

So what you will see is an evening out where the margin grows quickly.

Here’s something important to share with such an enthusiastic NYY fan, Eileen:

Do you know what Reggie Jackson said about important games to win?

          Mr. October said that there is only ONE game that is important to win;

The last game that you play in the season!

Also Stan, your phone is ringing. At Jeff Wilpon. He and daddy want to interview you for the Mets GM job.

wow guys, lol, Walker is doing a great job filling in all over and swinging a hot bat..
He made a miscalculation in right field the other day, a position that is not his, so stop picking…
Aaron Boone has made more errors than anyone else on that team, a position that never should have been his!!!

I never questioned Walker’s ability to play right. The guy can play right, I merely suggested a move to second, because he’s a better second baseman than he is a right fielder….obviously.

Yankees are 10-9 in August. Too much .500 baseball and the Yankees will have to say goodbye to the playoffs.

Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis eating up nearly $40MM in money in 2019…combined make an average hitter. Ugh. To be an orioles fan 🙁

Why don’t the A’s just release Joyce? He was hurting the team majorly this year, and I would much rather see a young prospect get a cup of coffee than the small amount of playing time Joyce will receive. He’ll probably continuesly hurt the team when he does play.
