Yu Darvish Suffers Setback

By Connor Byrne | August 19, 2018 at 3:24pm CDT

Cubs right-hander Yu Darvish hasn’t taken a major league mound since May 20, which may prove to be his final outing of the season. Darvish, who has been on the shelf for three months because of triceps and elbow injuries, left his Single-A rehab start on Sunday after throwing just one inning, Matthew Martell of MLB.com was among those to report. Darvish came out for the second inning, but he “was seen wincing” during his warmup, Martell writes, before indicating to the dugout that he needed to exit.

While Darvish had been making progress in recent weeks, this is now the second setback the 32-year-old has suffered since June 28, when he experienced pain during a bullpen session. Darvish’s departure Sunday came as a result of the same discomfort as his previous setback, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune tweets, adding that his next step is to go for an MRI.

Darvish is still holding out hope for a return in 2018, per Gonzales, but given the nature of his injury and the lack of time remaining in the campaign, that may not be realistic. If Darvish’s season is indeed over, it’ll go down as a disastrous year for someone who was widely regarded as the majors’ top free agent last winter. The Cubs signed the former Ranger and Dodger to a six-year, $126MM guarantee expecting him to continue serving as a front-line starter, but he has instead tossed just 40 innings in eight starts this season and posted a personal-worst ERA (4.95), FIP (4.86), xFIP (4.23) and walk rate (4.73 per nine).

Despite Darvish’s lack of contributions, the Cubs still lead the NL Central by four games over the archrival Cardinals, though it has been a less-than-ideal year in general for Chicago’s starting staff. Like Darvish, fellow established starters Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks and Jose Quintana have failed to produce great results, with ERAs ranging from 3.72 to 4.46 and a combined fWAR of 2.8 among the three of them. However, they’ve been downright ace-like compared to Tyler Chatwood, another of the Cubs’ disappointing free-agent signings from last winter.

Chatwood, whom the Cubs signed to a three-year, $38MM contract, owns a 5.22 ERA/5.56 FIP with a ghastly 8.23 walks per nine over 101 2/3 innings. The Cubs pulled him from their rotation a few weeks ago, only to start him again Saturday in what ended up as a two-inning, three-run, three-walk performance during a loss to Pittsburgh. Afterward, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic (subscription required) wrote that it’s tough to imagine Chatwood “throwing another meaningful pitch this season.” But whether that’ll be the case remains to be seen, especially considering the injuries to Darvish and effective swingman Mike Montgomery – who went to the disabled list Friday with shoulder inflammation.

For now, the saving grace of the Cubs’ rotation looks to be lefty Cole Hamels, whom they acquired in a trade with the Rangers prior to last month’s non-waiver deadline. Hamels, a longtime front-end starter, was mediocre for Texas this season, but he has been utterly brilliant as a Cub. Across four starts, the 34-year-old has logged an incredible .72 ERA with a 2.40 FIP, 8.28 K/9, 2.16 BB/9 and a 59 percent groundball rate.

Considering the shaky state of their rotation and their surmountable lead on a playoff spot, it’s possible the Cubs will look for more help on the trade market in the coming weeks. It would be difficult to make an impactful move, though, particularly with the NL playoff race being a crowded one and the Cubs behind several postseason hopefuls (including three division rivals) in the waiver pecking order.

Well that wraps up year 1. Hopefully the next 5 get better. Hamels is making this easier to handle though. Dude has been lights out!

Same with Darvish, he could be out year-1? Still too early to call the Darvish contract a bust.

Theo Epstein has now made SO many bad moves it’s getting hard to keep track of them. Despite the World Series teams (no small feat) his track record is looking worse and worse each year. This is a team that could have been a multiple World Series team and they now seem to be moving further and further away from that.

Theo hasn’t necessarily made good moves the last 3 years. The teams foundation he put together was incredible but the additions he’s been making haven’t worked out at all. Aside from signing Brandon morrow and it looks like Cole Hamels he’s been pretty much flopping all over the place. Heyward, darvish, Quintana, chatwood, the Justin Wilson trade wasn’t a real winner. Doesn’t make him a bad GM but he doesn’t exactly have the hot hand right now. He gave up a lot of cash or prospects for a minimal return there. If they win another WS it obviously all goes away.

Cobb looks good Now but he also got 54 million dollars. He doesn’t deserve a dime more than that. The market correcting is good for the game. It’s much better to have one underpaid JDM than it is to have a Bunch of albatross contracts running through the league. JD has the opt out so it’s likely he’ll get his money now too. Cain looks good in year one but that’s a 5 year contract, only time will tell. No one regrets not giving lance Lynn a multi year pact. Greg Holland surely didn’t work out. LoMo again flopped. Hosmer and darvish haven’t played well. The MLB needs to pay the young guys sooner because that’s where the insane value is coming from.

The Marlins, Phillies, and Royals have won two apiece in the last 100 years. This is pretty basic knowledge for your average baseball fan. The only thing I needed to look up was the date of the ChiSox Championship before 2005.

I know being a Cardinal fan causes you to suffer from Cubs Derangement Syndrome but Epstein has made several moves,in the past year to try to improve his starting pitching. Quintana has been an innings eater which is damning by faint praise, Chatwood looks like Ankiel did while Darvish, certainly at age 32, was a dangerous risk that looks like a disaster in the making. You are correct if you are trying to say that he hasn’t done much good work but he definitely tried.

The Cubs rotation is historically bad. It’s garbage. The Cubs are winning because they are good at other aspects. The other reason is that the NL is overall weak and the best teams are in the AL.

The Cubs have an old, expensive rotation, one of the 2 or 3 weakest farm systems in MLB and the worst team in MLB at developing homegrown pitchers. It could get very ugly in the next year or 2.

I think the long run of cardinals success made cubs and brewers hate our team, and thus our fans. The reds animosity has more to do with a brawl involving Molina and Cueto years ago. (Side note, other NL Central teams hate YADI). Cards fans I think get overly defensive by internet troll comments, and we have plenty of our own as well. Just my opinion. When I go To games and meet fans of the other teams, it’s almost always quite pleasant.

Whether he is suffering from physical problems, mental issues or both, I believe that you can put a fork in Yu Darvish for the 2018 season. Thank goodness that the front office was able to acquire Cole Hamels at the trade deadline and that the veteran actually looks like the ace he once was and what they expected Darvish to be when they signed him to that big FA contract last offseason.

I was thinking of going to that South Bend Cubs game to see Yu on the mound. Glad I passed and spared the disappointment. Fun place to go though. Nice little ball park. Enjoyed it as a kid when it was the South Bend White Sox.

Theo has 4 more years on deal. And cubs will be fine. If Hamels keeps dealing, I bet cubs pickup his option. It’ll definitely be one of highest paid rotations, but stats wise one or worst. Hamels 20MM, lester 25MM yu 21MM Q 12MM chatwood 13MM and Hendricks arb 2

While all you children are arguing about whose team is better i’ll say that Darvish is obviously done this year, who might be put on waivers that could possibly help them fill his spot? Chatwood is absolutely out of the question. They could possibly stick with Montgomery but he’s hurt somewhat and may need to limit his innings.

I could not understand why multiple teams were lining up for Darvish, and willing to pay him ace money… the Japanese pitchers who make it to MLB often were extremely overworked in their younger years, and eventually it all adds up to a point where a guy just can’t stay healthy. The man threw 1,268 innings by time he was 24 in Japan, He hasn’t been right in a long time.

Is it likely the contract will turn out poorly, most definitely, but baseball is a funny game and occasionally a nagging injury or off-field problem finally goes away and the guy finds his former glory again. Highly unlikely with Darvish, there’s just so much mileage on that arm and body already at 32.

Cubs should stretch out Chavez and give him a chance to start. As a former starter, he’s since changed his arm slot and been solid bordering on great. Don’t know why no one is talking about starting Chavez… could be the guy they need.
