Nationals Place Ryan Madson On DL, Select Tim Collins

By Steve Adams | August 14, 2018 at 4:46pm CDT

The Nationals shuffled their bullpen mix Tuesday, announcing that they’ve recalled righty Trevor Gott and selected the contract of lefty Tim Collins from Triple-A Syracuse. Right-hander Ryan Madson has been placed on the 10-day disabled list in one corresponding move, while southpaw Sammy Solis is headed to Syracuse to open a second spot on the 25-man roster. In order to create room for Collins on the 40-man roster, the Nats moved right-hander Erick Fedde from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Madson has been dealing with back discomfort, and the official diagnosis on his injury is “lumbar nerve irritation,” manager Dave Martinez told reporters (Twitter link via Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com). With both Madson and Sean Doolittle on the shelf, the Nats will turn to young Koda Glover as their interim closer, tweets Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post. Glover, though, is unavailable tonight, so Justin Miller would likely receive a save opportunity, should it arise.

As for the 28-year-old Collins, this’ll be his second stint with the Nats this season. The two-time Tommy John surgery victim pitched to a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings with the Nats earlier this season, prompting some frustration from Washington fans when he was designated for assignment. However, Collins posted a less impressive 8-to-6 K/BB ratio in that time, and he ultimately stuck with the organization after clearing waivers and being outrighted to Triple-A. The former Royals setup man has a 3.94 ERA and a 32-to-15 K/BB ratio in 30 Triple-A innings so far in 2018.

Giving it up to a nobody nonetheless. Madson and Solis have been terrible this year.

        Someone who’s batting .329/.418/.539 isn’t a “nobody”, even if he’s a rookie without a huge sample size.

I didn’t say Bote wasn’t good he’s a major leaguer. I more so meant that he’s relatively unknown compared to say Bryant or Rizzo.

Nats’ GM Mike Rizzo is trying to close the bullpen barn door after the horses have gotten out.
(Hey, at least the horses are getting an “out”….)

Any one who can figure out how THAT team with THAT much talent can be third in THAT division is a better man than I am, Gunga Din……

“Any one who can figure out . . . “

I’d start by looking at time lost to the DL: Murphy ~3 months, Strasburg~ 2 months (and counting), Zimmerman ~ 2 months, Ross ~ the entire season, Eaton ~ 2 1/2 months, Doolittle, Glover, Madson, Solis — assorted stints. Let me be clear, all teams deal with injuries and part of what makes a good organization is having a viable Plan B when one/a few of your starters go down. It does appear that the Nats have lost more time to the DL than either the Braves of Phillies, which, if true, would be an explanation not an excuse.

Don’t you think a seasoned manager, Dusty Baker for example, would have shaped a more competitive team?

“Don’t you think a seasoned manager . . . would have shaped a more competitive team?”

Not sure what Dusty or anyone else could have done with that many injuries. It’s the GM’s job to acquire talent, the manager just uses what he’s given. Plus, has Dusty ever shown that ability before?

Chicks dig the long ball. Madson just forgot that saying is for batters, not pitchers

Maybe the closer spot is cursed. If that’s so, please don’t put Koda in there. He’s already lost enough time to injuries.

So… is Joe Ross on the back of a milk carton at this point? This month should be right in line with normal Tommy John recovery, but that doesn’t look to be the case.

They sure don’t play like this was a must win season, so many disappointments that truly and deeply let their fans down

Bote sent him to the DL with a broken psyche. Good thing the Nats just gave Kintzler and Kelley away for nothin

Tizzies made a grave mistake not addressing pitching and catching in the person even though everyone knew they were weaknesses. No confidence in any starting pitcher not named Max or Strass for playoff starting pitchers. Arizona blew this potential great year
