Yankees Select Justus Sheffield, Move Clint Frazier To 60-Day DL

By Jeff Todd | September 18, 2018 at 9:13am CDT

The Yankees announced today that they have selected the contract of lefty Justus Sheffield, the organization’s top pitching prospect. He’ll be heading up for his first taste of the majors.

To create space on the 40-man roster, outfielder Clint Frazier was moved to the 60-day DL. The Yanks also brought up righty Domingo German to bolster their pitching options down the stretch.

Sheffield’s promotion was already reported over the weekend, but had not yet formally been made. The organization first had to sort out its roster machinations. Frazier, who came to the club along with Sheffield in the 2016 Andrew Miller swap, is going to be sidelined the rest of the year owing to his ongoing concussion issues.

Now that Sheffield is officially on the roster, it’ll be interesting to see how he’s utilized. Perhaps he will have some opportunities down the stretch, while the Yanks seek to hold off the A’s for home-field advantage in the Wild Card game. And it’s still conceivable that Sheffield could earn a role on the postseason roster.

    He’s eligible for the postseason?

I don’t believe so. To be eligible you must be on the 40 by 09/01 and since he was just added would be ineligible.

They have to petition the Commish
“Clubs can petition the Commissioner’s Office to add any player that was not on the 40-man roster as of Aug. 31 — provided the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing a player who has spent at least 60 days on the 60-day disabled list.”

Exactly. Francisco Rodriguez and his exceptional 2002 postseason was one of them. His contract wasn’t purchased until September 15th.

Maybe next year they bring back Happ to replace CC. They also never really gave Adams much of a chance. Having him make his mLb debut at Fenway was a little unfair. I would keep Gray as insurance since they still have another year of control.
Be interesting also to see what they do with Gardner moving forward. He has the team option or buyout.

    Yippie,
    We need a big lift.
If Cessa never helped, Cloudy Gray, CC lately, Herman, then give this kid a chance.
I don’t think he could ever be as worse than others they tried.
    Good luck Sheff!

Gray has helped us.His ERA on the road was good.It was his home ERA that was the problem even though his last start was bad, but not all the blame goes to him in that game either.

The 2 run single by Cave was his fault, but Romine didn’t help either with that passed ball that scored the first run & he didn’t do a good job at framing a lot of pitches, which could’ve possibly gotten him out of the inning as well, but to Gray’s credit he did pitch well in Game 4 of the ALCS last year. Gray’s worst season was 2016 where he was 5-11 with a 5.69 ERA analiytics wise. He was dealing with injuries that year, but he was dealing with injuries in 2015 as well, which was shown in an article by ESPN back in 9/26/15.

It’s spelled German & keep in mind that Glavine lost 17 games in his first full season as a SP as well & Severino wasn’t an automatic ace either in his first full season even though he’s cooled down a bit. CC is very old & we shouldn’t have re-signed him. Cessa has had his moments, but all in all you’re right.

However, if anyone wants our pitching problems solve #FireLarryRothschild

No, Gray is terrible and caused more losses than wins. Sheff can’t be worse than the garbage we already have in CC, Cessa. Gray. German

His record is 10-9 this year & not all the blame goes to him either because we had multiple opportunities to still those games, but left too many RISP & if we had won most of those games no one would be complaining about his performance right now.

I should’ve mentioned this in my comment, but there were times the times the defense was bad in his games as well.

Fenway Park:All 6 runs at home were his fault, but when he pitched over there he wasn’t by the defense at all.

Roger’s Centre:Gray pitched a bad game, but wasn’t helped by Gardner’s bad throw to second

Last home start against the Orioles: Torres who drove 4/5 runs failed to hustle to second & Bird failed to put his foot on the bag. Both of those would’ve prevented 5/7 runs by the Os.

Relief against the Jays: Torreyes made a bad throw to first & the one who should’ve been running there was , but for some reason was bending on 1 knee.

As I mentioned in last Romine didn’t help him in last start even though the 2 run single by Cave was his fault as I explained in my last comment.

#FireLarryRothschild if anything because Gray was taking PL with him this whole time.

Oh & if you’re how the prospects we traded for Gray are doing.

          Fowler’s hitting 222 right now

Kaprielian hasn’t thrown a game since April of 2016 & only threw 6 games in the minors, while recording 29.1 innings over there.

          Mateo’s hitting 230 in 510 PA 25 SB 10 CS 29 BB 139 S0 633 OPS

I hope he’s good. but if starting pitching continues the way it’s been i.e c.c. Sevy sonny gray,Cessa then even if the bullpen is good u at least have to be winning to give them a chance.also get rid of kahnle he’s not meant for a Mlb roster

The biggest problem in the past with Betances was over use by Girardi. So maybe he’ll still be effective this year.

Joe, everytime Betances feels comfortable in a specific inning or roll, and doing well when he kills the opposition,
GOONE, (not a typo) puts him as closer, my God, leave him the HECK alone in Sept. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
Goone, he is so calm and passive, and relaxed the team too much, he should have meeting, his first, lol,
and tell all of them a thing or two, my God. how many games did they lose already being in first place. then in the WC, now that is a disgrace!! All he is worried about is the lineup card and making himself be liked bcos Giradi wasn’t.
He cracks me up in the dug out asking the other beaut, Rothschild, what do after his pitchers give up 5 in the first, and never ever has one reliever warming up,
Poor Drob, he has been so over used already.
        Venting feels so good!

Ref hasn’t had many AB in MLB & is pretty much in the same situation as Nunez was.

Fraizer has been confirmed to have a legit concussion & keep in mind that Cashman likes him regardless of how anyone slices & dices it. The only time he ever considered trading him was when they tried to get Cole for 2 weeks, but that’s another story, which I won’t get into.

Anyway, Fraizer has had clutch AB for us last year despite hitting 231 as he hit a walk off against Milwaukee & broke a 4-4 tie against Seattle not to mention he almost won us a game this year in Tropicana Field & probably would’ve if it didn’t hit the top of the stadium.

I don’t think it did, but that should’ve been considered a HR anyway. He didn’t hit too badly when coming up here either. He hit 265 in 41 PA this season & he had no control over the concussion he had anymore than Judge had when he had his wrist broken.

If they can get the games in. I saw him pitch a AAA-game against the Indianapolis Indians, and he struggled in the first inning, but really looked good the next five. He seems to rack up the walks in the first in all of his starts. He does have a solid three pitches and here’s hoping we do get to see him. Man there’s a lot of trolls already on this thread…
