Cafardo’s Latest: Corbin, Eovaldi, Pomeranz, O’s, Nats

By Connor Byrne | October 20, 2018 at 8:27pm CDT

The Yankees (previously reported), Dodgers, Giants and Braves are among the teams that are expected to “show a lot of interest” in left-hander Patrick Corbin once free agency starts, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes. The 29-year-old Corbin is coming off a career season at the perfect time, having logged a 3.15 ERA/2.47 FIP with 11.07 K/9 and 2.16 BB/9 over 200 innings in 2018. As a result of that top-notch production, it’s likely Corbin will price himself out of Arizona and perhaps ink a nine-figure contract with someone.

More from Cafardo:

  • Like Corbin, Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi is slated to be one of the most sought-after starters available in free agency. While Eovaldi, 28, likely won’t do as well as Corbin on his next contract, many executives see fellow righty Alex Cobb as a comparable, per Cafardo. Cobb signed a four-year, $57MM contract with Baltimore in free agency last offseason, though Cafardo argues Eovaldi’s in position to rake in an even richer deal. Regarding Eovaldi, one exec tells Cafardo: “He’s shown, first of all, that he’s healthy. He’s shown he can pitch on a big stage. He’s shown that he’s grown as a pitcher where he not only relies on that 97-100-miles-per-hour fastball, but now he has a cutter that’s proven so effective for him and allowed him to pitch deep into games. And, he’s had two Tommy John surgeries, survived them and is flourishing.” Eovaldi underwent the second of those surgeries in 2016 and has indeed held his own this year upon returning. Between Tampa Bay and Boston, he pitched to a 3.81 ERA/3.60 FIP with 8.19 K/9 an 1.62 BB/9 in 111 regular-season innings. Eovaldi has continued his effectiveness in the postseason for the AL-winning Red Sox, with a 1.88 ERA and 10 strikeouts against two walks in 14 1/3 frames.
  • Meanwhile, Red Sox pending free-agent southpaw Drew Pomeranz is due to hit the market on the heels of a disastrous season. After he posted a 6.08 ERA/5.43 FIP with 8.03 K/9 and 5.35 BB/9 in 74 regular-season innings, including 22 2/3 in relief, Boston has left Pomeranz off its playoff roster. Nevertheless, the Red Sox “could foresee a rebound season” in 2019, meaning it’s possible they’ll re-sign Pomeranz, per Cafardo. Pomeranz, who will turn 30 next month, isn’t far removed from an impressive 2017.
  • Former Dodgers GM Ned Colletti and Orioles ownership have had “consistent contact,” a major league source tells Cafardo. Colletti reportedly met with Orioles president John Angelos during the summer, when Dan Duquette was at the helm of the team’s front office. The Orioles have since parted with Duquette, putting them in the market for a new head of baseball operations. It’s unclear whether the Orioles are considering Colletti for that role, though.
  • Nationals special assistant Dan Jennings has drawn interest from two teams, Cafardo reports, but it’s not clear which position he’d fill with either club or whether he’s even interested in leaving Washington. While Jennings is fresh off his third season in the Nats’ front office, he’s best known for serving in a pair of prominent roles with the Marlins. Not only was Jennings the Marlins’ GM from 2013-15, but he also worked as their interim manager for a 124-game stretch during his last season with the team.

The topic is Corbin and who will sign him and I’m pointing out that another lefty can and will make some noise on the free agent market this off season and his name is Kikuchi. I don’t think Cereal ever heard of him and I’m thinking by next year he will act as if discovered him which is typical of his personality. Good thing is he’s really not a Yankee fan so it’s not too embarrassing for us.

Never said Kikuchi was in same league as Tanaka and not sure that has relevance other then they both were born in Japan. Kikuchi is a lefty with a history of arm issues but he’s recovered and has a very high strikeout percentage in a league where it’s not easy striking batters out as contact is much more prevalent.

Comments sections are dying because people tend to be negative in them. They are used by some people with mental health problems. People tend to turn things into a political debate, red vs blue, they spread hatred, threaten violence, etc. I would be fine if all bulletin boards were removed. It’s a bit sad how out of hand many discussion forums can get. I don’t mean this one, which is an exception to the rule.

Your ridiculous, fantastical, and sometimes unimaginable proposals speak for everything. Why would the Braves be in on Corbin ? We can have Greinke for only 3 years and get Arizona to eat some contract make them take Teheran where he can eat innings and possibly build some value back and they can trade him. It would be like getting an Ace on a 3 yr deal that doesn’t happen this day and age. Either you overpay on years or money or both.
Teheran’s contract would hold value for a rebuilding team and The more contract of Greinke they eat the better the prospect they get in return.

The dbacks would move grienke I’m sure. If they decide they want to deal goldschmidt they’d love to get rid of grienke as well but he’s owed 93MM over those 3 years. That’s no small number. They have little minor league help coming and with the loss of Corbin it’s going to be really hard to see that team compete with the dodgers and rox.

Greinke is six years older than Corbin, and he could go crazy again if he messes up his medication or stops taking it. The worst thing the Braves could do is trade a couple of prospects for him and then he quits baseball again.

Folty, Greinke, and some combination of Touki, Fried, Soroka, or Newcomb would be a formidable rotation. If they could bring back Anibal at a reasonable rate, I’d be for that, too. (With one or more of the kids moving to the bullpen, being traded, or optioned.)

Would the DBacks consider Teheran an innings-eater and salary relief? The Braves also would have to add a couple of prospects since they’re probably losing Corbin, but I see this working. Especially with a few more great-looking pitching prospects at least one full season away from the majors.

Yes, Teheran can go to the moon for all I care. If the Braves can get anything decent back, that’s a bonus. I’d like to see them nab Corbin but some greedy piggies up north probably have the advantage. No pitcher should be signed for more than five years, unless his name is Maddox, Glavine or Smoltz.

No playoff rotation will have Teheran and/or Newcomb penciled in. They’re both to inconsistent or erratic to give the ball to when it matters. We’ve been an incubator for Newcomb, now let that little bird go, and give his innings to someone ready for it (Touki, Soroka, Bryse Wilson, Wright, etc.).

I’d say if they’re gonna go for Greinke then go all in. Ask for Greinke and David Peralta for Teheran and 3-4 prospects. I’d say Braves take on all of Greinke’s salary for 2019 and 2020 (shedding Teheran’s $11 and $12MM in those years eases the financial burden and gives them more incentive to actually trade him) and like you said, maybe Arizona eats up to half his salary in 2021 depending on what prospects Atlanta sends over.

Takes care of RF for the next 2 years as well as the rotation for 3. Greinke, Folty (who my phone keeps auto correcting to “filth”, which is fitting. Haha) and Gausman is a killer 1-3. Fill out with Soroka and any one of Touki/Allard/Fried/etc.

Peralta fits in really well batting 4th or 5th depending on where Acuña lands.

I guess if we paid 23mil for Adrian Gonzalez and what ever for the other 2 pitchers we got from LA we could probably pay for Greinke if they take JT and add Peralta.(Kazmir and MaCarthy)

Of course the Braves will be in on Corbin. He is better than Greinke. Younger than Greinke. Less miles on him than Greinke. And you do not have to trade for him. You just sign him.

I love this idea sbn. If Az eats some of the salary I could see it happening as the DBacks will almost certainly begin a reboot if they lose Corbin..

I do not want the Braves going after Corbin. The guy was absolutely phenomal this year … THIS YEAR. Prior to that he looked like Blair Walsh in the desert. No thank you. Just too big of a gamble.

I also think Gausman will light it up next year in Atlanta. One of the best defensive teams in baseball instead of what was easily the worst, in a park that is pitching neutral instead of offensive friendly. Yes, the RF power alley does carry some balls, but outside of that it’s a better pitchers park than Camden, especially against the AL East bombers. I have no worries going into next season with Gausman and Folty at one-two. I do worry after that but I am hoping Newcomb takes the same leap Folty did last year and we send Teheran out of town (like the guy, but his inconsistency just kills his value). With all of our arms I figure we will rotate guys through spots 4&5 keeping fresh arms up and making use of the 10-day DL.

Don’t understand all the Newcomb hate

He had a 3.15 era through the first 23 starts to season

Yes he ran out of gas and had an aweful final eight starts that brought the era back up but that’s part of the growing process having never pitched a full season

They gave him some extra rest to close the year and it clearly did him some good to recharge because he looked good again in October albeit a small sample size

Still I think most of his inconsistencies people are worried about is nothing more than fatiguing from new territory volume wise

He’s going to adjust to more volume and be fine

He looked as good as Folty through 23 starts so why abandon that all of a sudden? It took Folty a lot longer to figure it out and get here and everyone seems ready too cut Newcomb out after one full season

Why so obsessed with the Giants? Like the NYYs, LADs, Red Sox, etc, they are one of the teams with large financial wherewithal to possibly sign any FA. Like every team some signings work out and some don’t. They’ve had some bad luck. To assume that their recent FA deals haven’t worked out means they never will is just foolish.

Wow. I didn’t realize Eovaldi has had two TC procedures. While I was expecting a great contract, the numbers mentioned are great but he’s still an injury waiting to happen. I look for 3 years max at $14m – $16m per with health incentives triggering a 4th year. Before this run, he was probably looking at a minor league deal. Nice increase regardless! Congrats to him if his success is legit. Sorry to add the last line but in today’s game you just never know.

Money talks. My guess is Pomerantz gets zero multiple year offers and will take the best MLB invite he gets. The word best is meant as a real MLB invite. Can see the Marlins or Tampa. Both would then flip him in July.

I can see the Yankees getting involved with Eovaldi again. Now that he looks like more of a complete pitcher rather than just a thrower, he’s pretty appealing. Not to mention he’s handled the spotlight quite well in his return. I think a successful offseason would include signing Corbin, Happ, and Eovaldi, plus resigning Robertson

Think there’s as much chance of the Yankees going after Eovaldi as there is to re-hire Girardi!
The Billy Martin days are long in the rear view mirror. And besides, Eovaldi seems to be a big injury question mark on a multi year deal.
They’re better going after Corbin who apparently wants to be a Yankee (if the money and years are right), possibly re-sign CC, and quickly attend to the bullpen which has been there strength.
