Nov. 22: The Indians announced the trade, revealing that they sent 19-year-old righty Ignacio Feliz to San Diego in return. Feliz spent the 2017 season with Cleveland’s affiliate in the Dominican Summer League and the 2018 campaign with their Rookie-level affiliate in the Arizona League.
After some significant control issues in 2017, Feliz took a huge step forward in 2018 against older competition, pitching to a 3.00 ERA with 10.8 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a ground-ball rate well north of 50 percent in 45 innings. Encouragingly for Padres fans, Fangraphs’ Eric Longenhagen opined that Feliz was the best prospect traded on the day of the 40-man deadline and provided a brief scouting report on the athletic young righty.
Nov. 20: The Padres are in agreement on a trade that’ll send right-hander Walker Lockett to the Indians, MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell reports (via Twitter). In exchange, San Diego will receive a minor league pitcher who doesn’t need to be added to the 40-man roster in advance of tonight’s deadline to protect players from the 40-man roster.
For San Diego, the trade boils down to clearing some space on the 40-man as they look to protect as much of their vaunted farm system from next month’s Rule 5 Draft as possible. It’s the second such trade they’ve made today, having already sent Colten Brewer to the Red Sox in an earlier swap. Quite likely, there’ll be more moves for the Friars when all is said and done.
It’s also the second such trade that Cleveland has made, as the Indians yesterday acquired righty Chih-Wei Hu from the Rays. Like Hu, Lockett will present Cleveland with some optionable depth for the pitching staff. The 24-year-old Lockett was hammered for 16 runs in 15 big league innings this season, but he showed strong ground-ball tendencies and solid control while pitching in the minors. Through 133 1/3 innings in Triple-A last season, Lockett posted a 4.73 ERA with 8.0 K/9, 2.2 BB/9 and a 47.3 percent ground-ball rate. The ERA, of course, isn’t pretty, but the Indians clearly believe he can improve with some adjustments under their watch.
Friarfaithful117
Three more spots to go.
ERLking
Isn’t it at least four more?
RedRooster
Depends on how many guys you think need to be added. The three locks to be added are Chris Paddack, Anderson Espinoza and Austin Allen. So at the very least they need 1 more. Then still more depending on what you think happens with Pedro Avila, Edward Olivares, Ty France, Hansel Rodriguez, Gerardo Reyes and Michael Gettys.
Friarfaithful117
I would live for the Padres to clear enough spots to protect all those guys but I think five is the “goal”. AJ Casavell says they will clear at least four spots on Twitter.
csspackler
They’re not going to protect Rodriguez, and probably not Gettys or Reyes.
Friarfaithful117
Agree with your assessment but I think some of those guys have more upside than a few players on our 40 man now.
YourDaddy
Reyes has struck out nearly 30% of batters this season. 69 in 45 IP. He throws triple digits. He has not given up a run in Mexican Winter league play in 14 outings. Good chance they do protect him.
sdfriarfan
Lockett wasn’t that impressive. Good move.
sufferforsnakes
Cleveland has a way of fixing these types of pitchers. They wouldn’t have traded for him if they didn’t see that possibility. Only 24, so plenty of time.
Waitings The Hardest Part
Spot starter swing long man. 5th at best a 4. Realistically thats what cleveland should expect.
RedRooster
Well we all know what happened with the last pitcher the Padres traded to the Indians who was a “5th at best a 4” XD XD XD
jorge78
Tom Petty fan? That’s one of my favorite songs!
Waitings The Hardest Part
Kluber was regarded as a C+/B-prospect being taken in the 4th round who had a good fastball and average secondary pitches who was viewed as a 4th possibly a 3rd if it all came together.
Lockett on the other hand doesnt have the fastball and would need to be like 50% 75% greg maddux in his later years where he relies on location and off speed stuff to be effective since he doesn’t have velocity.
Bringbacktheblue
Then I hope you give us something good in return.
YourDaddy
Ignacio Feliz. A minor league pitcher.
csspackler
Obviously they saw him in the AZL during the summer. 54 Ks in 45IP. Had 8 good starts out of 10. Punched out 10 in 4IP on Aug. 6. FV 40.
bleacherbum
Dennis Lin is rumoring on his Twitter that Christian Villanueva’s rights might be sold to a team in the Japanese league.
nmc420theambassador
saw that, much approved.
mrpadre19
This may depend on the Segura deal.
Hard to limit us at 3B even further without acquiring one somewhere.
ESP. If Myers is traded.
If we make the Mariners deal we put segura at 2b and Tatis at 3B and therefore don’t need CV.
RedRooster
Segura at SS*
Urias plays 2B
Waitings The Hardest Part
Brewer and Lockett gone.
SS Guerra to the Orioles
RP Wick to the Nationals or Angels
2B/SS/3B/OF Spangenberg DFA, Sold to a Japanese team, or Astros/Angels/Braves/Brewers/Mariners/Yankees as a utility infield option,
YourDaddy
Wick to the Cubs it looks like. Villanueva to Japan. Just need one more.
Michael Chaney
I’m a fan of guys who induce grounders, but I just don’t see enough in him to make me think he’s capable of being anything more than a fringe 40-man guy, even with the Indians’ ability to develop pitchers. Even in the minors he’s been more than hittable.
That they’re actually trading a warm body for him and not just claiming him probably means they see something, but I guess we’ll find out. At 24, there’s at least something to hope for.
csspackler
Is Pirela gone yet?
RedRooster
Thinking Preller will work the phones trying to trade him for as long as possible and if no one bites he’ll just get DFA’d
YourDaddy
We can hope. Looks like Preller is set on trading for or signing a 3B. Does Hosmer get a reunion with Moose or will Preller go get Suarez?
csspackler
I have a hunch that if/when all else fails he’s going to get Franco. In fact, I think they have a trade in place but are still looking around.
YourDaddy
Shouldn’t take much to get Franco.
norcalguardiansfan
Wonder if they will turn him into a reliever. What does he throw?
sufferforsnakes
Didn’t I read a quote somewhere about ‘failed starters end up making some of the best relievers?’
nymetsking
Usually a baseball
ERLking
Csspackler what you got against him, I mean except for the overly aggressive base running? lol
RedRooster
Doesn’t take walks or hit for power. That profile only really works if you’re Ichiro. Pirela is no Ichiro. He was also a negative on the basepaths and at every position they tried him at.
Waitings The Hardest Part
Theyll keep Pirela around as a cheap platoon option with Hosmer on days off against lefties, Cordero, and play him mainly at 2B with a Garcia/Pirela at 2B 1st month of the season to delay Urias reaching free agency, then DFA or trade pirela to a team looking for a platoon 2B/1B/corner OF bat if he gets off to a decent start at the plate once Urias is up after the 1st month of the season.
YourDaddy
Myers is not getting traded and he is slated for LF. Centerfield, barring a trade is Margot. RF is up for grabs between Renfroe and Reyes. I think Renfroe will be traded because he is more of a proven commodity and more valuable. Jankowski is the perfect 4th OF/ late inning defensive replacement. That leaves Cordero in AAA to start the season.
Pirela is a terrible defensive player and can’t hit for beans. He is far from a decent platoon player.
csspackler
Your last two sentences say it all.
Waitings The Hardest Part
Pirela only serves as an option until Urias is up after the 1st month. Nothing more nothing less. DFA pirela now, while not DFA Spangenberg and/or Guerra, makes no sense. And if you DFA Spangenberg and/or Guerra Pirela serves as depth for 1 month until you call up the core.
Far as Myers. Padres would be wise to either pursue a Zach Greinke or Kyle Seager trade involving Myers. Arizona and Seattle have the opportunity to put him at 1st. He cannot stay healthy in the OF while Greinke is a durable arm who can be the ace and Seager is coming off a down year after posting 5 consecutive years of at least 3 WAR, plays excellent 3B defense.
Seager and Myers are roughly owed the same amount of money, Seagers deal expires after 2021. Myers after 2022.
Greinke is owed 30 mill more than Myers which means padres could see prospects so Arizona doesn’t have to eat money. Greinke is also up after 2021.
That would leave Cordero, Renfroe, Reyes, Margot. Renfroe could be dealt to Atlanta in a deal involving Yates and Stammen for some of their pitching.
RedRooster
I think that if they were worried about pushing Urias’ free agency back, he would have never been called up in the first place. With 34 days of major league service time already, Urias would have to stay in the minors until May 16th to have his free agency pushed back.
YourDaddy
Urias will be up on opening day. Myers >> Seager. Greinke is the most expensive player in baseball and 35 years old. Just say no to old starters that throw 88 mph.
Waitings The Hardest Part
Urias was called up around August 27th, a few days before rosters expanded to 40 man for September. 1st. Holding him down until then is still a possibility and one the Padres should exercise.
YourDaddy
So is snow in San Diego. I will put my money on it snowing at Lindbergh before Urias is sent down.
RedRooster
Wouldn’t be opposed to the idea but with the exception of Renfroe and probably Tatis next season, Preller and Co. seem to have largely steered clear of service time manipulation.
Waitings The Hardest Part
If you can get a decent prospect or two from Arizona for taking Greinke for a couple years why not. And Greinke is 35, throwing 88, and pitching like a #2 #3- 200 inning (which is huge for a young staff) era and periphials 3.8 and below. He’s essentially Greg Maddux in that hes a true pitcher who knows how to pitch.
Also the deal involving Myers isn’t 1 for 1 swaps. Other pieces would be involved. Myers can’t stay healthy Seager and Greinke can. Seager is clearly a rebound candidate but a pivotal position for the Padres (3B).
Id rather take a chance on Seager regaining his previous form the last 5 years than Myers staying healthy in the OF.
YourDaddy
I can give you $35 million reasons why not. And 35 more. Greinke would be literally the worst thing a small market and small revenue team like the Padres could do. It would keep them from spending money on any other player for 3 years. That is more than just stupid, it’s criminally stupid.
Waitings The Hardest Part
Renfroe was sent down for a month or so in his rookie season to “work on mechanics” in Triple AAA. It had service time implications when making the decision.
RedRooster
… minus the $22.5m/year they wouldn’t be paying Wil Myers
YourDaddy
3 straight years of decline from Seager. Not so smart to bet on any bounce back from a 30 year old player in precipitous decline.
Waitings The Hardest Part
And paying myers $22.5 mill the in 2020, 2021, and 2022 years doesnt hurt their ability to sign players? LOL ok chief.
Myers at 3 years 77 mill ish or Greinke on a 2 year 70 mill deal.
YourDaddy
Yes it did and they did it in a year they had no plans to compete. That is not 2019 when both Preller and Opie’s jobs are on the line. This is .500 or bust for both of them. Urias will start the year in the Padres 25 man roster. The options are dysmal without him in there. Pirela being literally the worst of those options.
Waitings The Hardest Part
Not smart paying Myers 22.5 mill a season for averaging less than 60 games in the OF with the Padres. 19.5 mill for Seager for his 2019, 2020, 2021 seasons giving you 150 games of good 3B defense at 80-90 offensive > Myers injured 2/3 of the season riding the DL in 2020, 2021, 2022 at 22.5 mill.
YourDaddy
Myers salary doesn’t bump up until 2020. It’s $5.5 million in 2019. That $30 million increase in payroll would mean no other signings or trades that added salary in 2019. Not going to happen. Trading for a 35 year old starter is stupid. Trading for a 35 year old starter making $35 million per season for the next 3 seasons is criminally stupid.
YourDaddy
Not smart to pay Seager a penny when his next step in the decline is to be cut completely. 31-year-old guys hitting .200/.260 do not have places in MLB rosters.
27 year old guys that put up a 2.4 WAR in a half season do.
It really doesn’t matter if Seager plays 150 games. He is bad and getting worse and he is over 30. He will do nothing but decline more.
Rather see Preller take on Frazier’s salary in a trade for Syndergaard to lower the prospect cost. At least Frazier plays good defense and doesn’t hamstring the team for 3 years with his horrendous contract.
Waitings The Hardest Part
2 years (2020 and 2021) of Greinke at 70 mill does literally nothing to hurt the Padres chances to supplementing pieces for contention.
C- Hedges or Mejia
1B- Hosmer
2B- Urias, Tatis Jr, Ruiz, the player they picked up from the Red Sox,
SS- Tatis Jr, Edwards, Arias, Miller,
3B- trade target or Potts,
OF- Reyes, Margot Cordero with options like Reed, Naylor, Little etc.
SP- Gore, Paddack, Baez, Patino, Quantril, Morejon, Nix, Lamet, Weathers, Allen,
Padres, if things go their way, dont need free agent additions or need to spend for a couple years possibly 2023 or 2024. If things arent going the Padres way and nobody is panning out or multiple positions arent working no amount of money will fix it.
Padres ride or die with the prospects. They cant spend to compete.
Waitings The Hardest Part
Who cares what Myers salary is in 2019. Padres arent competing this year LOL. Point of trading Myers is to get out from under money owed to him a year earlier which frees up money for contract extensions for core players. He’s not a long term piece. Padres arent gonna spend money this off season and be contenders.
With no 3B and young pitchers Seager and Greinke have better value to the Padres as place holders allowing them to get out of paying Myers 22.5 mill in 2022 while their eventual replacement 3B and SP work their way up the minors.
YourDaddy
The point of making any trade is to make the team better. WAKE UP!
Taking on a declining and putrid 31 year old Seager is the opposite of that.
Taking on 35 year old Greinke is the opposite of that. Greinke would mean ZERO signings or trades other than him for 3 years. It’s not smart. Preller is smart.
RedRooster
“Greinke would mean ZERO signings or trades other than him for 3 years. It’s not smart. Preller is smart.”
Maybe for one year but definitely not 3. Myers’ salary to Greinke’s is only a $12.5m jump starting in 2020 and that’s if the Diamondbacks don’t kick in any cash. Plus it would clear $22.5m in salary for 2022.
Oh and idk how “smart” trading for Matt Kemp, Wil Myers and Freddy Galvis was, or handing out a franchise record contract to a guy who played a position the Padres already had filled and had only averaged 1.9 WAR a season for the previous 4 seasons.
YourDaddy
Moot point Ryan. Looks like Myers going to Seattle. They are just waiting on Leake’s approval and he is a SD county boy. Can’t see him saying no.
RedRooster
Who are you talking to?
Waitings The Hardest Part
Acquiring Kyle Seager and prospects or Zach Greinke and prospects doesnt make the Padres better? LOL ok chief. Being able to sign core players to contract extensions a year earlier doesn’t make the padres better? LOL ok.
2019 is a year the padres shouldn’t try to be better. They should try to have 1 last top 5 overall pick year, trade away veteran assets by July 31st, and let the rookies play in august and september then decide what to do going forward and with whom.
csspackler
OK. You’ve provided the positives. How about the negatives?
YourDaddy
And he plays atrocious defense everywhere.
ERLking
Reminded me of Willie Coyote! BEEP BEEP!
The Ghost of Bobby Bonilla
Tribe is doing the right thing and gathering tons of bullpen arms. Hopefully they gave up literally nothing for this gas can thrower. Now Cleveland just needs about 4 more bullpen guys and about 3 outfielders.
Of course, they could probably get all of that by trading the KluBot, so the Winter Meetings should be interesting. Heck, I’d even take Ichiro at this point. But hopefully, they try to win it all by signing McCutchen or Pollock.
Michael Chaney
McCutchen is a tailor-made fit for the Indians; they can slide him in a corner spot and expect decent offense and a great guy in the clubhouse. I’d have to imagine he’ll get something in the $12-14 million range per season though, and I’d be surprised to see them pay that.
sufferforsnakes
Maybe someone will take EE’s contract off their hands, making a Cutch move possible?

#Padres have discussed a trade with #Mariners in which they would acquire SS Jean Segura and RHP Mike Leake for OF Wil Myers, sources tell The Athletic. Leake would need to waive his no-trade clause for deal to occur, and also is weighing other potential options, one source says.
RedRooster
Could work but it’d be subtracting 1 guy from 40-man and adding 2 which means more guys need to be traded/DFA’d. Plus I doubt the Mariners do Myers for Segura and Leake straight up.
YourDaddy
According to Calcaterra, it’s a straight up salary swap.
RedRooster
All he’s said (at least on Twitter) regarding Myers is “It is Wil Myers’ role on Earth to be an important part of rebuilding teams until approximately 2-3 years before they might be good.”
SixFlagsMagicPadres
I can’t stand Calcaterra.
Polish Hammer
Sounds like a good prospect going west.

A lot better than DFA’ing Lockett for nothing.
