Twins, Ronald Torreyes Agree To One-Year Deal

By TC Zencka | December 6, 2018 at 3:47pm CDT

Just moments after news came down of the Twins closing in on a one-year deal with second baseman Jonathan Schoop, Minnesota has announced the signing of another infielder, Ronald Torreyes to a one-year deal, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand tweeted. The team has announced the deal via a press release.

Fancred’s Jon Heyman adds (via Twitter) that the deal will be with $800k if Torreyes makes the Major League team. Dan Hayes of The Athletic further clarifies that it’s a split Major League contract for Torreyes, who does have a minor league option remaining (Twitter link).

Torreyes’ journey to Minnesota included a quick layover in Chicago, as the Cubs acquired and non-tendered the infielder within a three-day span in late November. Torreyes, 26, spent the last three seasons with the Yankees, slashing .280/.294/.370 in  limited action with the big league club. For his career, the versatile infielder owns a .281/.310/.375 line across parts of four seasons. The Twins will likely look for more impactful production at the plate from Torreyes if he is to earn a consistent role at the Major League level. If he makes the club, he’ll pair with Ehire Adrianza to give the Twins a versatile couple of infielders off the bench.

Two words: Aaron Boone. (like he forgot Toe was on the roster especially as yr progressed)

Girardi valued Torreyes more than Boone did. The easy cop-out is to blame Cashman.

They were short depth when Didi went down, and when Torres went down. They needed infield defense more than “depth offensively, because he wouldn’t provide offense anyway. Wow, so my asking #Begamin why the guy was in the minors should make me unsure of my fandom..

He has a rough year last year. His wife was having health complications and one of his newborn’s died. He was absent from all of baseball for a time. When he played in the majors he did well for a backup/utility player. Its very clear it wasnt because he cant hack it. Maybe pay attention next time, i know you hardly do

In June all i told you was that Bird was ramping up and then he had a good July like I predicted. I remember another time I told you he was ramping up again and he hit a grandslam the minute later. But ohhh guess im the one whos wrong. I never claimed he was a god. But jeez man i remember you told me he was slumping for 30 games straight because his his “last 30” overall stats were not good even though if you actually checked anything you wouldve seen the him do well in first 15 games of that 30 game stretch and then struggle in the latter half. Talk about accepting truths.

Youre sold that a player with high potential sucks and should be given up on and he doesnt even have 1000 career PA in the majors. Such a lack of patience. Hey, next season how about you actually watch some games

You asked a question and I, as well as others, responded. Cry more if you want

Why would Toronto trade him when they can just get they’re doctors to say he’s unfit to play and get insurance money back on him saving them millions?

Heyman must have issues. He has made these kind of mistakes often lately on Twitter. I’d love to know what the Cubs problem is! You trade $$/PTBNL to NY for Torreyes, then immediately non-tender him. This happens when you preach to fans how you need to be “creative” with payroll.
Would a $800k contract really be the reason?
Maybe Theo is hanging out with Heyman!

Hopefully he’s playing everyday in AAA. He’d be on the bench in MN and Adrianza is better so he should not make the team. Though I just read that Adrianza had some kind of shoulder surgery so this is probably protection for that.

I hope you mean Adrianza has the better bat, but I’m guessing not since it seems to say the opposite.

      Last two years:
      Adrianza 7.2 BB%, 19.4 K%, .125 ISO in 184 games
      Torreyes 3 BB%, 13.5 K%, .084 ISO in 149 games

The only thing he’s better at is striking out less and Adrianza isn’t worse than average at that.

I’m not saying he’s amazing or anything but when you have half the guys in the majors batting .250 or lower you would think some team would at least give him 1-2 mil and a spot on the 25 man.

You must be from 1985. BA only tells you a small part of how a player produces. Torreyes only has a career. .685. He is a terrible offensive player.
