Cubs To Sign Rob Scahill

By Jeff Todd | January 18, 2019 at 3:56pm CDT

The Cubs have agreed to a minors deal with righty Rob Scahill, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter). It is not yet known whether Scahill will receive a spring invite, though it stands to reason that he would.

Scahill, who’ll turn 32 right as camp opens, has appeared in each of the past seven MLB seasons, though he has yet to tally 35 frames in a given campaign. All told, the reliever owns a 3.85 ERA through 149 2/3 innings. He has managed just 6.0 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 in that stretch, but does carry a healthy 55.0% groundball rate.

For most of the 2018 season, Scahill pitched for the White Sox’ top affiliate. Though he only provided Charlotte with a 5.64 ERA, Scahill did post an uncharacteristically robust tally of 10.5 strikeouts per nine.

Barring injury, the odds seem long for Scahill to crack the Opening Day roster for the Cubs. Still, he could be a worthwhile depth piece for the Chicago organization and will enter Spring Training with at least a fighting chance at staking a claim to big league pen job.

I find it funny that they’re dumpster diving old Brewers rejects. Us brewer fans have had to endure the Cub trolls for a long time. Can’t help but poke back a little.

As a Cubs fan who has lived in WI for the last 20 years the feeling is mutual. There are only a handful of Brewer fans I know that actually follow them year in and out regardless and I’m sure you can say the same for Cubs fans. Point being, you’re always going to “hate” fans from the other side. Wish we could all just go back to hating on the Cards 🙂

Cubs deserve it after some of the awful contracts they handed out. Heyward and Darvish are the reasons Harper is not/will never be a Cub. Nice job Theo

This site is as its most hilarious when teams make minor league signing. Hilariously sad how everyone rehashes the same tired and misguided jokes. How many times do minor league signings end up being very beneficial to a team? Very often in the MLB, especially with relievers.

I feel like I’m sitting at an American Legion when I see how unoriginal and lacking in critical the jokes are around here.

I wouldn’t bet on this guy being a difference maker but it seems like a solid depth signing imo

I’m curious what moves you think the Cubs should have done this offseason. They are not in a very good payroll situation currently (meaning how much Ricketts is allowing into the budget). As far as minor league deals go, this seems like a pretty solid one. He seems like the kind of guy the Cubs turn into a serviceable arm

Meh – we’re doing our best to make this offseason the least bit entertaining, while nothing happens except the hourly updates on what Manny and Bryce ate for lunch.

Also, this is hardly a ‘depth signing’.

Lol no. I had an alcoholic father who was a commander for quite awhile and I spent a decent amount of my early childhood around the legion, as well as random times throughout my life. I said American Legion just to make it very specific but you could say the same about most bars frequented by day drinking drunks. I have a beer or two a month (not at a bar) but I got to witness the cautionary tale closeup. I’m no better or worse than the lot of them but Jesus they are boring to be around

You guys are all waiting for a huge signing like Harper or Kimbrel so then you can just crap on that one. Must be a wonderful life you guys live when all you do is sit there and bash a team cause your team sucks. Not sure who you guys all like but I’m not seeing a lot of Red Sox fans saying anything. Cause they win and their fans are intelligent and for the most part good sports. Just like the football team they have in that area, ya know the greatest football team any of us have ever seen the New England Patriots. Let’s go Pats

Maddon gone after this season if no WS. They were ready this season to axe him, but most likely will offer the job to Girardi next season. A lot of people love Maddon, but I can’t stand his approach. No fundamental practices, no small ball, no meetings, pajama parties, constant lineup changes, whatever. He is like the dad who would rather be the child’s friend instead of being a parent and disciplining the kids. Problem is it winds up hurting those kids/players in the long run. I think guys like Happ and Schwarber would have benefited much more in a different system..
