Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado chatted with Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post in advance of Spring Training, saying his shoulder is at full health and that he’s eagerly anticipating the 2019 season. That’s good news for a Colorado club that’ll need its best player operating at full strength to make a run in the NL West. Of course, the big question as camp nears is whether there’s any possibility of a long-term deal to keep Arenado around for the long haul. At a minimum, he and the team need to bridge a $6MM arbitration gap. Arenado says the contract matters aren’t a distraction for him; rather, his “agent is taking care of all that.” The Rockies star said that there’s no tension or anger stemming from the arbitration talks. However, there’s yet to be any indication that the two sides will be able to see eye to eye on a long-term agreement with Arenado just months from reaching free agency.
- The Pirates announced earlier tonight that they’ve added outfielder JB Shuck on a minor league contract, and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets that they’re still looking for outfield additions on minor league pacts. Among the names Pittsburgh is currently eyeing are Cameron Maybin and Brandon Guyer — a pair of veteran right-handed bats who have considerably longer track records than Shuck. Of course, both Maybin and especially Guyer are coming off underwhelming seasons at the plate. Maybin would bring an element of speed to the Pirates’ bench, while Guyer is typically more of an on-base threat and has handled lefties better in his career. Either could pair with Lonnie Chisenhall in right field — Guyer and Chisenhall have previously platooned together in Cleveland — while the Pirates await Gregory Polanco’s return from shoulder surgery. Polanco is expected to be sidelined for the first couple months of the 2019 campaign.
- New Reds outfielder Yasiel Puig was primarily a right fielder with the Dodgers, but he said Wednesday evening that he’ll be prepared to play center field if his new organization asks him to do so, writes Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. Cincinnati has a clear need in center field and has been rumored to be seeking additions both via free agency and on the trade market. Puig won’t hesitate to play either outfield spot and said his primary focus is on being in the lineup on a daily basis and helping a rebuilt Reds roster push for a postseason berth. Puig also discussed the mixed emotions he felt upon learning he’d been traded and his relationship with hitting coach Turner Ward, among other topics.
- Neil Walker spoke with Marlins reporters about his one-year deal with the team (link via Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald), explaining that this offseason he put an emphasis on being signed before Spring Training began. Walker noted that he had interest from other clubs, but some were playing the waiting game for other free agents (including a few clubs who were first waiting to see what happened with Manny Machado before adding an infielder). Walker candidly called the beginning of his Yankees tenure the “worst month-and-a-half of [his] career” — not in reference to the team but rather referring to his own performance. Walker felt that his lack of a full Spring Training was a significant detriment, and he had no intention of waiting into March to sign once again. Walker hit .247/.346/.442 in the season’s second half after a disastrous start to the 2018 season.

I don’t know how I’d feel with Puig as my everyday CF
hiflew
I know how I’d feel. I’d feel great because that means I would own an MLB team.
marlins17
LMAO. This is the correct answer. Man, to own your own MLB team, getting dizzy thinking about it.

They have medicine for that.
BlueSkyLA
There’s a reason why Puig didn’t play much CF as a Dodger. The reason is he wasn’t very good at it.
stratcrowder
No, it’s because they had better options and he played RF pretty well. His playing CF for the Reds will not hurt them whatsoever. His grid match to balls in play with the staff based on three year averages (plus park) adjustments are actually a slight tick above the average mark.
John Egan
in LA fans either loved him or hated him… I am on the loved him side… he plays with an exuberance that energizes the fans and his teammates, despite the showmanship and lapses in judgment, which I think will diminish as he gains more experience. I hope he does well for the Reds…
BlueSkyLA
Their “better options” for most of that time were: Hernandez (utility), Taylor (converted infielder) and Bellinger (converted FB). Puig is faster and has a better arm than all of them. And yet… when the Dodgers were really short of CF options in 2014, Andre Ethier played more CF than Puig, and that was the year Puig played the most CF. They even liked Toles better in that spot. Probably for no reason, though.
And for the record, I don’t hate Puig one bit. The vast majority of LA fans will definitely miss him. But that doesn’t change any of the facts about his play at CF. Hope he succeeds there for the Reds. I just would not get my hopes up too high.
FullMontilla
What team did Bellinger play fullback for? I didn’t know he played football.
Sorry, but I gotta razz a Dodger’s fan!
User 4245925809
Count on Maybin to take horrible route on flyballs, then dive so casual fans will think he’s some kind of decent CF.. Just like many did with Ellsbury for years. His legs will maybe get him a job for awhile, but the hype on him is about gone now.
BobSacamano
Hype? He’s 32, and been in the show 8+ years..you know what you’re getting out of Maybin.
Lastplace4eva
I didn’t know he was Dominican too? Anyway at this point I wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Bucco uniform this year. Just remember how many starts S-Rod got last year.
Goku the Knowledgable One
You act like Pirates fans will care …
Pirates fans = families with kids under-10 years old, who’s experience relies on if they spill their nachos on dad or not.
davemlaw
Numbers don’t lie: Maybin put up a 1.2 WAR last year. 1 WAR is worth 7-9 Million dollars. He’s capable of playing in the majors. A minor league contract is an insult. Steve Adams, check your facts before saying things like “underwhelming season”.
I’m not saying Maybin is a super star but he’s a capable major league player.
chitown311
Can you please reference me to where 1.0 war is worth $7-9mm? Not discounting your numbers, but please provide where this comes from
kenleyfornia2
Trying to put a dollar figure on WAR is way too much overanalyzing. He played in 120 games so its not that impressive to finish at 1.2. Maybin is not worth the same contract Brian Dozier got.
Robertowannabe
WAR to dollar amount is very subjective. Depends on the market status for players in your position. If there is a ton of players with your WAR or better, the dollar amount will go down very few players your money expectations go up. The player’s age and injury history will dictate money more now than it used too. Not the same market that it was a couple of years ago.
terror661
When do you think the Dodgers will win a WS? Cause you post here a lot and seem to always tell everyone else they are wrong about everything. So when’s it going to be Mr. Know it All?
petrie000
Anything under about 2 WAR isn’t starting caliber.
‘replacement level’ also factors in all the bench players, so the baseline for starters isn’t 0.
Ski to Coors
There aren’t enough players capable of 2 fWAR to fill out entire teams throughout the league. Every team in the league is going to field at least one 1 WAR player when you consider things like injuries and under performance.
Not trying to justify Maybin as a starter, obviously that isn’t ideal. Maybin is the type of guy that, at this point in his career, has to wait for someone to get injured in ST and a last minute need to arise.
petrie000
Being forced into using a bad player doesn’t lower the bar for what counts starter caliber.
Yes, teams will start a guy who puts up under 2 WAR… While looking for a better replacement.
Maybin I kind of living proof of the distinction. You want him on the bench just in case, but you don’t go into a season thinking ‘this is our everyday guy’
Dad
Whoever said a two war is average baseline for a basic dud of a ballplayer is right. Two war is Very forgettable baseball players
1988wasalongtimeago
Adam Jones to the Reds? I don’t think they have or are willing to spend the $
joepanikatthedisco
Not a CF anymore. Too similar to Kemp at this stage. If they sign an outfielder it’ll be a platoon CF who can still field, like Maybin.
hiflew
Austin Jackson?
luclusciano
jackson is not a horrible choice, but I think Maybin would be more logical. Maybin can give you better defense and offense and they are roughly the same age.
andrewgauldin
Just heard MLBTR was mentioned on MLB network today. Idk if this is the first time or not, but that’s awesome! Keep up the great work boys, love reading the articles!
scarfish
I join you in applauding all of a MLBTR for the mention on MLB network. Well deserved and some of the best writing on the web.
Ejemp2006
Maybin had Kenny Lofton level talent but a career that fell way short. Everywhere he go, he performs a little to give hope then doesn’t take step up to become all star or at least borderline all star. Too bad. But I like him for a depth piece a this point.
bravesfan88
He’s definitely been a letdown based off his projections and level of talent; however, he’s still carved out a fairly decent career for himself. A lot of players have talent that never even reach half the success Maybin has, but still, admittingly, I expected a lot more from Maybin than what he’s produced at this point in his career..
But yeah, I couldn’t agree more Maybin has been extremely frustrating. Just when you thought he had figured things out, and he was going to turn a real corner, then bam he’d go back two steps..
⚾The Heater from Van Meter⚾
Puig will be just fine hitting in Cincy. Playing centerfield everyday, not so much.
hiflew
Cincy’s outfield is relatively small, so it might not be that big of an issue.
joeshmoe11
They need a defensive specialist for spot starts and late game switches but I think between Puig and Senzel they’ll be ok if that’s what they enter the season with.
⚾The Heater from Van Meter⚾
Not worried about Puig’s ability to cover the outfield. It’s more of his body holding up for the entirety of the season if he plays centerfield the majority of his starts. Puig has a long history of hamstring issues.
PinstripedPride
Nolan Arenado…. future Yankee? He doesn’t have any of the controversy that has been hyped up around Machado, plus he’s only a year older
stratcrowder
Hope not. Hate his splits. No more Colorado guys, please.
22Leo
Arenado is awesome on defense in any stadium. That is a big part of why he is so valuable.
mattynokes
Machado owns a career .861 at SFG, which is higher than in ARI (.817). Plus he owns an .810 at SDP. Does Coors help him? Sure. It does anyone, but his splits show once he gets comfortable in a division, he’ll hit.
exile
You mean Arenado not Machado.
mattynokes
Right. I guess with all the Macahdo talk everyday, his name came out instead of Arenado.
exile
Yet you would happily take Machado although he played his home games at Camden Yards, and played most of his road games in hitter friendly parks in the AL East.
Career numbers on the road AVG, HR, OBP, SLG, OPS
Arenado .263, 78, 318, .469, .787
Machado ..271, 69 .319, ,442, .761
As you can see both have very similar career away numbers with Machado having a higher batting average by 8 points while Arenado has a higher slugging percentage, and OPS
Steven Chinwood
I could see that.
therealryan
As a free agent, Arenado will need a contract for his age 29-34/35 seasons at an AAV equal to or greater than what it will take to sign Machado for his age 26-34/35 seasons. If you have to sign both players into their mid-30s at the same AAV, why not sign the guy now that will also give you his peak age 26-28 seasons? It also would make sense to sign Machado now because he can play SS while Didi is recovering.
Steven Chinwood
The point is the Yankees wait it out to sign just one FA in Arenado next winter, and who knows at this point what it will take to sign him. The Yankees are set with SS contingencies until Didi is healthy, and there’s the trade deadline if needed. They have no payroll room right now to sign Machado.
Moneyballer
It seems like everyone eventually signs J.B. Shuck.
HarveyD82
“eyeing” = are they more than 1m?
Dodgethis
You can tell Puig has matured over the years and is glad to have a fresh start. He could be great playing 81 games a year in that park. And he’s right, it’s definitely a baseball town.
ConorMc
I still often ask myself why I have pirate season tix.
Lastplace4eva
You must have money to just throw away. I never had season tickets but always went to 5-10 games a year and was probably at about 15 or so home openers in a row maybe more. But now I haven’t been to a game in 2 1/2 years. I prefer to spend my money on better things like supporting local bar and pizza shop owners! However I do still watch on TV when I can.
xXabial
Nolan best bet is to sign an extension. hes great but no Matt holiday
bush1
He’s way way better than Holiday ever was. It’s not even close.
nyy42
Lol
22Leo
This is true. There is no comparison between the two. Arenado is on a level Holliday can only dream about.
cjuluca
They should have kept Hamilton at cf for $5m.
FromTheCheapSeats
Yup
joeshmoe11
Hamilton was going to make $7m in arbitration. At $5 he’s worth it. $7 for a reserve who has VERY limited value in that home park? Good luck in KC
stymeedone
The best indication that any player “only months” from testing free agency might be willing to sign an extension:
Machado and Harper
Get Tased at CBP
Stupid money Middleton will be all over Arenado next offseason.
leftcoaster
Puig is the type player you love if he’s on your team and may hate if he’s not. I’m an admitted old school, get off my lawn, traditional middle aged baseball guy and still loved the guy as a Dodgers fan. Theatrics aside, he gives everything he has on every play. I have no doubt he can handle cf in a pinch.
raabeye
The Reds already have their CF on the roster, and he has a monster bat no less. Michael Lorenzen. He was a very good college outfielder. Worth a look during spring training.
Ski to Coors
I wish the Yankees would sign Machado and stay the hell away from our Nolan.
canadianyankee
Honesty is a great attribute, grab yourself a beer my good man! Personally I’d rather see Nolan in pinstripes but Manny wouldn’t upset me either…George would’ve had Harper in LF, Manny at SS and Nolan at 3B with Andujar moving to 1B while Bird unloads bags from the bus…young Stein seems to listen to Cashman a bit more cuz the $ coming in are more important than the $ going out…originally I predicted Harp-chado would be in pinstripes, now I’d be surprised if either end up playing there
callingoutdummies247
I’m sorry you were wrong, you’ll get it right on the second prediction
BobbyJohn
If I were Bridich, I would not go to Spring Training with Arenado on the roster unless he has been signed to an extension.
And that’s not going to happen with Ian Desmond’s contract still on the books, meaning a trade that involves a couple of decent prospects to get another team to take that salary.
Bridich should also seriously consider locking up Freeland and Marquez to 5-year deals at affordable rates to get some cost certainty in place for the rotation.
Wolf Hoffmann
Puig looks fat in the recent videos. Hopefully he can slim down before the season starts. I would love to see Puig in Centerfield. The idea of him steamrolling the Left and Right outfielders makes me chuckle. Not to mention the maiming of the infielders on pop-ups. That would be awesome.
