Rosenthal’s Latest: Kimbrel, Keuchel, Eloy, Pillar, Joyce

By Mark Polishuk | March 31, 2019 at 6:24pm CDT

There isn’t much indication that Craig Kimbrel or Dallas Keuchel are closing in on new contracts, though that hasn’t stopped teams from keeping in touch with the two free agents.  Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of The Athletic (subscription required) list the Mets and Brewers as two of the clubs checking in on both pitchers, though Milwaukee is more focused on Kimbrel as a potential add.  The Rays are also still maintaining contact with Kimbrel, after reports during Spring Training suggested Tampa Bay was at least considering signing the closer.  Rosenthal and Lin described the Mets’ interest in Keuchel and Kimbrel “as a matter of due diligence,” with MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo and Newsday’s Tim Healey (both Twitter links) adding that it doesn’t seem likely that either pitcher will end up in a Mets uniform.

Here’s more from Rosenthal, via his most recent Full Count video for FOX Sports…

  • Eloy Jimenez’s career-opening extension with the White Sox included “an understanding” that Jimenez and his camp wouldn’t pursue a service-time grievance with the league and players’ union.  Jimenez’s agents expressed public displeasure last summer when their client wasn’t given a late-season promotion, and the young slugger had been ticketed to begin this season in Triple-A before he inked his extension, which opened the door for Jimenez to join Chicago’s Opening Day roster.  The evidence seems to pretty clearly suggest that the White Sox were aiming to extend their control over Jimenez for an extra year, though the Sox are far from the only team that deploys this strategy with top prospects.
  • The Giants are the only team known to be involved in the Kevin Pillar trade market, though Rosenthal notes that the Blue Jays have also talked with multiple other teams about the center fielder.  Pillar offers two years of team control and a center field glove that was elite from 2015-17, as per the UZR/150 and Defensive Runs Saved metrics.  Last season, however, Pillar’s glovework was rated closer to average overall, and he has yet to post even league-average run production over his six MLB seasons.  If a trade did take place, Pillar would join Kendrys Morales, Russell Martin, and Troy Tulowitzki as Jays veterans sent out of town as Toronto makes room for its younger players.
  • The Braves acquired Matt Joyce from the Giants last weekend, just three days after Joyce joined San Francisco on a minor league contract.  Rosenthal provides some details on the transaction, stating that while the Giants were prepared to part ways with Joyce regardless, Atlanta chose to send some cash to the Giants in a trade rather than simply sign Joyce when he became available.  Since league offices were closed last Saturday on the day of the trade, Joyce’s arrival in the Braves’ spring camp could have been further delayed had the two sides been required to wait for the contract to be officially approved.  With a trade, however, Joyce was able to get some time in Atlanta’s camp, which led to his placement on the club’s Opening Day roster (Joyce marked his first PA with his new team by swatting a pinch-hit homer).

The current Sox play-by-play guy is very good. But Hawk is like watching a game with your dad or G-pa. He gets criticized for being a homer by other fanbases, but who cares. Stark contrast to the mannequins in the cubs broadcast booth.

15 to 20 years ago, Hawk was great, probably one of the best announcers in MLB. It seemed like every year since then he got worse. About the last 5 to 10 years, I couldn’t stand listening to him, he became such a blowhard. I think there were times he forgot a game was being played, with him constantly reminiscing his glory days. Hawk took being a homer way too far.

Benetti’s a little boring, but I’ll take him any day of the week over Hawk.

I love the Braves as a team but AA has made some odd decisions. It’s true, if they wanted to win and move ahead of last year we needed a power hitter, a frontline SP and some RP help. None of that was addressed. Hope Folty and Gausman come back and compete for the Cy Young otherwise the Cubs and Marlins can bury the Braves deep in the cellar this week.

When you’re giving up walks to a lineup like Texas, you got mad issues, son.

Don’t hold your breath on Kimbrel. The cubs won’t spend money for a real closer. Season over.

How in the world can a White Sox fan talk about signing players? First off no elite guys wild ever sign with the White Sox in the first place. Obviously, after planning since last July to land Machado or Harper worked out so well. Plus the Cubs have spent the 3rd most in the league and are already over the tax limit. It’s mind blowing that White Sox fans think they can run their mouth after beginning the 8th yr of a rebuild with no end I’m of said rebuild in site. Ridiculous…

I guess it’s an effective way to mask your cognitive dissonance over Theo’s poor FA signings, or how bad the pitching is for a “cashed” strapped team that earned the 3rd highest revenues in the sport last year.

But how can a fan of a team that literally no star player will ever sign with talk badly about the Cubs?! They spend money and have been in the Playoffs 4 straight years. How’s year 8 of the rebuild, and the knowledge that no good players will ever sign with Your team treating you these days?

Pretty harsh assessment after only 3 games. If it were the NFL, you might want to worry a little, but since MLB has 10 times the games NFL has, I wouldn’t panic too much. If the Braves go 0-15, then you might want to press the panic button. It’s baseball, I’m sure the pitching will improve.

I do not want to anticipate, but in these 3 games I have not seen anything. there is no pitching, where is donaldson? or mc cann I do not know, but it will be a long season. you did not sign the players you had to sign, at least one good pitcher and one power fielder. Money they have, this organization got 442 million in profits last year. And always with the same of prospects and prospects 0 – 3.

In Pillar’s defense, he’s starting in Toronto because Toronto is not very good. Neither is San Fran and he could easily start in that outfield.

You would think the players union would pursue something to get mlb to do something now. Plenty of teams have done this before but they stuck with it, not make it super obvious by sending him down then signing a new contract with more control then bringing him back up. Bring the hammer down on the White Sox with draft pick loss and fines

WOW! I knew my expectations were high, but at this rate the Giants are going to lose 100 games! Mr. Zaidi the off season is an opportunity to improve your team with the addition of quality or better players. I don’t want to hear we were in the running for Harper, because the fans knew it wasn’t going to happen. It was a ruse to make the loyal fan base believe you were trying to improve the team for ticket sales. But are you going to tell us we have nothing better in the farm system even remotely better than Joe and Reed? To think I drove my family of five to San Diego to catch two games!! It will be the last two games this year in which I waste my hard earned money. What a joke!!

Totally agree re Reed and Joe. But I’m still stupid enough to pay to go to a game. Amazing last minute deals on tix!

Zaidi has done nothing to earn the high paid salary he is getting and power to change the team. All he has done is bring in role players that couldn’t make it with their previous teams; nothing to address the “punchless” offense; and still hasn’t settled on corner outfielders.

Pillar may not be the long term answer but he certainly will be an upgrade over Joe and Reed (hitless after 4 games); and at least he and Duggar defensively will cover a lot of ground in the outfield. If a trade for Pillar can be worked out do so now.

    After 4 games the Giants offense is below the Mendoza line … 22-124 … .177 BA … 22 1B, 8 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR 5 RBI, 33 TB, 8 BB, 36 K … yes 14 more strikeouts than total hits.

Pitching has been the only positive for the Giants after 4 games.

So … Zaidi what are you going to do to make the Giants better and turn things around immediately? You can’t wait for the July trading period. You must address the problems now! Or, you may be in for a rude awakening from the fans on opening day at Oracle Park.

You are right. They should just forfeit the rest of the season. No need to play anymore games.

Not sure why so many people are hating on Pillar. He’s an average hitter for his career, good speed, and an above average defender (besides last season). I’d like to see the young guys get their chance in Toronto but it’s not like the Giants would get a bad player.

Pillar is a manager’s dream. He has learned how to play the game right. He gives it all he has on every play. Teams know exactly what they are getting with him. Every team would like a Pillar type in centre field.

We are determined to beat this dead horse, aren’t we. Now that Captain Obvious has thrown this nugget of common sense out there (do you really think Eloy’s camp was going to file a grievance after signing that contract), maybe we will be done with this once and for all.

Once again, Hahn would’ve been an idiot for not taking advantage of a legal loophole other GM’s already took advantage of. And once again, even if you thought this was wrong of Hahn to exploit this loophole, he corrected it with the extension. End of story. Hopefully this is the last time we have to bring this subject up.

Keuchel would be a major upgrade to the back of the Mets rotation. One year deal?

I am a Brewers fan but as an MLB fan I think the Brewers would be a smart place for Kimbrel even on a 1yr deal. A team with a great bullpen and offense will help him have good numbers. Hes obviously not gonna get the years he wants for the price he wants. He would be smart to at least take a 1yr prove it deal with a good club.
