Angels Select Matt Ramsey, Designate Sam Freeman

By Steve Adams | April 24, 2019 at 5:14pm CDT

The Angels announced that they’ve selected the contract of right-hander Matt Ramsey from Triple-A Salt Lake and designated veteran left-hander Sam Freeman for assignment in order to open spot on the 25-man and 40-man roster.

It’ll be the MLB debut for Ramsey, 29, who is in his first year in the Angels’ system. The journeyman minor league hurler spent the 2018 campaign in the Astros organization, where he pitched to a 2.04 ERA with a 63-to-16 K/BB ratio in 53 innings of relief between Triple-A (47 innings) and a quick stint with Houston’s Rookie-level affiliate (six innings). He’s off to a shaky start in Salt Lake, having allowed seven runs (three earned) on 11 hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings of relief.

Freeman, 31, just made his Angels debut last night, allowing a run on three hits and two walks in two innings of relief. He spent the 2017-18 seasons in the Braves’ bullpen, pitching to a combined 3.34 ERA in 110 1/3 innings. Freeman’s numbers deteriorated across the board in 2018, however, and Atlanta cut him loose during Spring Training. He latched on with the Halos on a minor league deal and posted a 3.00 ERA in nine Triple-A innings, though his 7-to-6 K/BB ratio wasn’t particularly encouraging.

If Freeman clears waivers, he has enough service time to elect free agency, so it’s possible that today’s DFA could spell the end of his time with the organization after just a few weeks.

Good riddance. He (Freeman) was worthless last night.

Why couldn’t Braves management see his uselessness this fast. We had to suffer through 2 years of this loser. You guys didn’t even let him have 2 nights

He was serviceable for 1 1/2 years with the Braves. it was only after overusing him in the 1st half of last season that he went downhill.

It’s most interesting that most of the high risk athletes that Epp-god favors are position players and not pitchers. I genuinely wonder what the long-term internal strategy is for the Angels to address their pitching needs.

Seems like Canning is likely to be a May call-up too.

I have never been a fan of Bedrosian. He had one good season and has stunk the mound up since. He has lost so many leads by letting inherited runners score.

Good for Ramsey for hanging in the minors pursuing his dream. he seems to have decent peripherals.

But, man, a 29 year old making his debut following Stratton following Harvey is just not worthy of a Mike Trout led team.

When will this management understand that it’s time to start bringing up there pitching prospects plus Matt Thaiss to replace Bour and could also release Cozart. Outfield needs adjustments as well. Brian Goodwin is a keeper but it’s time to say goodbye to Peter Bourjas. Bring up Tori Hunter Jr. or whoever is doing well in the minors in the outfield. Angels have nothing to lose.

Wish Ramsey the best, fingers crossed. Just so sad… Won’t push the budgt, so we get to watch a bunch of can’t be’s try til their arms fall off just to get through 4…

Yeah I do to with Ramsey. My question for Eppler is why don’t we start bringing up our top prospects if they are ready? I here Matt Thaiss is tearing it up in AAA as well as Taylor Ward. Plus I want to see Griffith Canning and whoever is ready to pitch and contribute to the 25 roster. I know Otanni is on his way. This team needs a spark.

Thaiss is hitting .216. Hunter Jr. is in A ball. Get a clue, pretender.

You get a clue pretender! I’m tired of Eppler bringing in these hasbens off the streets. Other teams got rid of them because they weren’t doing it. Once in awhile you get a gem out of it. Eppler needs to do his homework.

Eppler is cleaning up the gigantic mess he was left with. The Angels has the worst farm in baseball and the 2 worst contract’s at the time he was hired (Pujols and paying Hamilton to play elsewhere). Give him that $50m a year and see what he can do with it. He has made the farm respectable and is doing what he can with a maxed out payroll. Get a few of your buddies and picket Arte’s house demanding he raise payroll enough to bring a superstar or 2. Eppler is doing a decent job. Oh and Cozart was hurt just about the entire year last year. How about giving him more than a few weeks to work out the rust before demanding his release?

Well said. And now that Trout is a lock, Eppler can build around him. Until he signed, the long term plan was in limbo hence the 1 year signings.

I rather have Matt Thaiss with his 216 average then having Bour with his barley over the Mendoza line. The guy doesn’t even hussle

Very happy to see Ausmus being decisive when a guy isn’t helping the team win. There are couple others who need some bench time until they can learn to hit again.

Love my Angels but thinking that this is a rebuild year. Maybe we are playing for next year’s draft pic? If so, we should only draft pitchers (and a catcher).

Geez guys, this site use to be for the educated baseball fan. Maybe we can bring up baldoquin as well. I think hunter senior can still probably hit major league pitcher better then junior, currently.

I didn’t mind the Cahill and Harvey signing but they should have signed Morton and Miley as well. Figuring u would get 2 maybe good and 2 serviceable pitchers. That would only have cost 9 million more then what they are paying Cody Allen.
They got very very very lucky with canning he is gonna be the ace and an all star in 2020.

At least philly fan stopped talking about trout.
