Yankees Acquire Cameron Maybin

By Steve Adams | April 25, 2019 at 1:59pm CDT

1:59pm: The Yankees announced that they have acquired Maybin from the Indians and immediately selected his contract to the Major League roster. In order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, Luis Severino was transferred from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.

11:31am: MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweets that the Yankees are sending cash to the Indians in return for Maybin.

11:06am: The Yankees have acquired veteran outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Indians, Jack Curry of the YES Network reports (Twitter link). He’d been with Cleveland’s Triple-A affiliate after signing a minor league contract and was not on the club’s 40-man roster.

It seems quite plausible, however, that Maybin could be added to the big league roster in New York. The Yankees placed Clint Frazier on the injured list this morning and are also without Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks, Giancarlo Stanton and Jacoby Ellsbury, leaving them with an outfield mix comprised of Brett Gardner, Mike Tauchman and Tyler Wade.

Maybin, 32, has opened the season in Triple-A Columbus with a .229/.397/.292 batting line through 63 trips to the plate. He is, of course, a seasoned big league veteran who has logged parts of 12 seasons at the MLB level and compiled a career-long .254/.322/.368 slash line. Most recently, Maybin split the 2018 season between the Marlins and Mariners, hitting .249/.326/.336 with four homers and 10 steals in 384 plate appearances. He spent Spring Training with the Giants organization, but poor performance and a DUI arrest while in camp unsurprisingly led the Giants to move in another direction.

Defensively, Maybin isn’t the player that he once was, but he still boasts well above-average speed and has ample experience playing all three outfield spots. Last year’s 28.5 ft/sec average sprint speed, as measured by Statcast, ranked Maybin in the 84th percentile of all big leaguers.

The move seems likely to be a short-term boost for the Yankees’ outfield depth. If the team can manage to get each of Hicks, Judge, Stanton and Frazier healthy, there’d be little room with Gardner and Tauchman also in the fold. And if injuries to any of the Yankees’ key outfield assets prove to ultimately be more severe than initially feared, it’s likely that the New York front office would pursue a more impactful upgrade down the line.

Adam Duvall is stuck down in Gwinett and has an OPS over .900. I would take him over Maybin any day.

I would argue that Maybin has more appeal since he’s a better glove, better contact skills, brings some speed to the table and can play all 3 OF positions and can be a pinch runner off the bench once they start to bring others back. The fact that he’s at least an average if not slightly above average CF is super important in case Gardner catches the injury bug since we really don’t have anyone else suited for that position. And oh yeah, Duvall isn’t that good at baseball any more.

Maybin has no power but at least he had an above .200 bat avg and above .300 OBP.. Duvall was an awful .195/.274/365 last year and struck out at a higher rate than Maybin,

As much as I like Maybin, Duvall is rated as the better defender. The main reason, I believe the Braves traded for him last season. I definitely agree with you about Duvall’s bat. It didn’t travel with him to the Braves unfortunately. Both players are good guys. Hopefully everything works out for them.

What is Cashman supposed to do? Options are limited this early. Not that they have any use for long term replacements anyway, but most teams aren’t going to trade significant pieces of their roster in April. Not much else you can do but utilize waiver claims and swing minor deals for depth guys. Not that there’s any good options left in FA, but any FA OF that wasn’t on a team recently would take too long to get ready.

Yes they are, and they themselves are just one injury away from needing to call up Maybin. Really makes no sense unless Maybin was approaching an opt out date.

The Indians have Brandon Barnes, Trace Thompson, Oscar Mercado and Daniel Johnson all in line if they needed an OF. Sure none of them are great options, they they are high on Mercado and Johnson and both Barnes and Thompson had good springs. So Maybin was expendable.

Think Maybin is mostly just a name now. Glove still there, but base stealing ability is about gone and the bat never was.

Could be just another emergency depth callup should New York need one and then the Yanks themselves get rid of him.

The Indians have a competent CF in leonys Martin. Maybin in a corner slot is thoroughly uninteresting and zimmer will eventually be back. They also have Mercado who should get a shot soon considering how predictably terrible Allen and Naquin have been.

Sick of Cashman riding the success he had early on! He got far too much credit for the late 90’s/ early 2000’s when in all actuality he rode the shirttails of the GM before him. Since that time he’s done no recruiting, no building and only signed high priced free agents. I could do that!

He deserves no credit. He’s done nothing with what was for years the largest payroll in baseball. All of his acquisitions are either over hyped prospects or overpaid free agents. He was able to overhype his farm for a long time and fool other teams into thinking they were getting legit talent but in the end they were all busts! That’s how he has built a team year after year. Now everyone has caught onto his game and the trades just aren’t there anymore either. The Yankees will be near the bottom in the AL East by the time his contract is done. Nobody trusts him, not even agents for players. That’s coming from a Yankee fan of 45 years that lived through it all and knows more than just having enough to scrape by for a season and having a legit World Series team. Patchwork rotations and youngsters that’s all bat with no glove is not going to cut it. The only thing Cashman can take credit for right now is Aaron Judge, all the rest are overhyped by the New York press.

The Pirates are not trading Polanco nor Marte, and I think that they will keep Cabrera as the fourth outfielder.Shuck is definitely available now as they will have to put him on waivers. The fascinating question is what will they do with Chisenhall once Dickerson comes back.
I think that Martin will go back to AAA soon, and Reynolds will too once Marte comes back.

Chisenhall will probably hit the 60-day IL with a strained calf by then, so it will be academic

I don’t think a guy like Maybin is going to be the one to break their injury curse lol. Who’s next, Shelby Miller?

Trey Amburgey and Billy Burns are AAA Scranton OFs. Cameron Maybin may not be as good as they are.

How can you have this many outfielders, all-star outfielders at that, and have them all be injured? Amazing.
