Red Sox Place Dustin Pedroia On Injured List

By Jeff Todd | April 18, 2019 at 6:33pm CDT

7:34pm: The move is no official. Reliever Marcus Walden was brought up to take the roster spot for the time being.

6:52pm: Pedroia will indeed hit the IL, per WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford (Twitter link).

6:33pm: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has yet another injury to his troubled left knee, though it seems that he has avoided a significant new problem. Regardless of the outlook, it’s the latest indication that the lauded veteran will likely never get back to being a durable, everyday player.

Pedroia “felt a pop” in the joint, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said in an appearance on the Dale & Keefe Show on WEEI (audio link). That characterization set off some initial alarm bells.

As it turns out, the initial medical review was fairly promising, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. Testing indicated that the 35-year-old “did not sustain a serious injury,” though the precise diagnosis remains unclear.

It’s still not known whether Pedroia will require a return trip to the injured list, though Abraham says that appears likely. He had just been activated after missing virtually all of the 2018 season. Pedroia recorded two singles and a walk in his first 21 plate appearances.

No matter how this particular situation plays out, it’s not likely to be the final time the Red Sox have to deal with uncertainty regarding Pedroia this season. As Dombrowski put it, given “the number of things that he’s had going on with that knee, as we know, the knee is never going to be one hundred percent.”

If the club ends up having to dip into the farm system to find a replacement, it seems likely to call upon Tzu-Wei Lin. Skipper Alex Cora cast doubt upon the idea of calling up slugging prospect Michael Chavis, as Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com tweets, though the third bagger is now being introduced to the second base position to open that possibility.

This is sad. As a 31 year old, 5’7, second baseman through little league and high school, Pedroia was the ultimate player to look up to. He was proof you didn’t have to be a big guy to be a great baseball player. You had a great career Pedey, but it’s time to hang it up. Future manager no doubt in my mind.

Probably more with our sports heroes than with most others, when Father Time starts to collect his due, it’s sad to watch. Doesn’t matter if the name on the uni is Pedroia or Kershaw or Mantle or Pujols or Bryant or Namath or whatever… once time catches up with the body, you’re never going to be what you were ever again.

It would be nice if he could have some high level play left in him but I am always fearful for the second base position shortening careers for Red Sox players. Marty Barrett, Jerry Remy, Jody Reed, Doug Griffin, Mike Andrews right off the top of my head. They all seemed to get beat up out there. I’d like to see Lin get a decent shot at the job instead of the yo-yo treatment given some others like Swihart, Travis, Brentz.

Time to retire or come off the bench

The only thing he can contribute from the bench is to coordinate stealing signs with Apple Watches like a few years ago.

He should spare his team, players and fans watching his diminished skills and contributions.

The Red Sox captain turning into the Mets form captain (David Wright).

He is still owed 40 million through 2021. You would think the club and him can work something out so the Sox can get some insurance money back. He should retire if only to protect himself from life long pain.

He’s 35 and had a great career. Like Dom pointed out the knee will never be 100%. He won’t be what he once was that’s what age and injuries do to the body but hopefully he can get healthy enough to have some kind of productive role.

npb.jp/bis/eng/players/91895133.html How excited would you be to be able to get a hitter like him to play second base for the Red Sox? He’s a terrific player who is going to be posted in the near future.

Sad but you couldn’t blame him for keeping on with all that money left on the table. Red Sox sure could do a lot with that additional payroll space.

Wow, you’re way too touchy about Pedroia………while some of the negative comments are indeed stupid, the rabid reactions from Red Sox fans are as if everybody else just spit on Jesus himself…..get lives men…..the guy is good but wow, not the greatest of all time….JEEZ!
This site and the individual stories always evokes bunches of dumb and hateful comments….if you’re going to read and post…just get used to it and take it with a grain of salt as they say!

Called this when he got activated. There was no reason, other than the home opener, to come back that soon. The team should have done a better job protecting the player against himself. Of course Pedroia wants to play!
