Yankees Injury Notes: Severino, Andujar, Sanchez, Stanton, Tulo, Hicks

By Jeff Todd | April 18, 2019 at 8:08pm CDT

Injuries are the story thus far for the Yankees, whose sluggish start is explained in no small part by a dizzying barrage of maladies. One of those has proven particularly confounding, as young starter Luis Severino came down with a lat strain while rehabbing a shoulder injury. As James Wagner of the New York Times reports, the investigation into the origins of Severino’s health problems has become a tale of its own. At this point, the team isn’t sure how that problem popped up; GM Brian Cashman says it wasn’t detected in the imaging that identified the initial shoulder problem.

In any event, there’s still five weeks to go until Severino can potentially start to throw once again. While he and the team wait for that important development, they’ll hope to welcome back a few other players. The latest …

  • The Yanks are at least open to considering utilizing Miguel Andujar as something other than a third baseman, manager Aaron Boone indicated to reporters including Wagner (Twitter link). Andujar’s shoulder injury hasn’t limited him much with the bat, but has made throwing difficult. Even if he’s able to avoid a surgical procedure, then, a return to the hot corner may be difficult. In that event, it’s possible he’d be utilized in the DH slot or perhaps even at first. Those possibilities aren’t yet being discussed in earnest, with Boone saying the club will wait to see how Andujar’s throwing progresses, but it now seems there are some new approaches on the table.
  • Backstop Gary Sanchez is still on track for a quick return to the active roster, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch writes. In fact, with his calf injury evidently progressing well, he may be back when first eligible on Sunday. That’d be a nice boost for the lineup; the 26-year-old catcher had been back to his slugging ways before incurring the injury.
  • Outfielder Giancarlo Stanton also seems to be showing signs of nearing a return from his biceps injury, though he’s certainly still further off. Stanton has taken cuts off a pitching machine, as Hoch tweeted yesterday, though it’s still a bit uncertain when he’ll be fully ready for activation. It seems possible, but not certain, that Stanton could return before the club wraps up a lengthy West Coast road trip on May 9th.
  • Several other players are also progressing, but on less-certain timelines. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is also working back from a calf strain that is a bit more significant than Sanchez’s. (Via Hoch; Twitter link.) He’s participating in baseball activities and says he’s feeling good, but there’s still no indication when he’ll be ready. Outfielder Aaron Hicks is also engaged in a variety of baseball functions but hasn’t yet taken batting practice to test out his ailing back. He’s hoping to do so this week, Wagner tweets, which would perhaps clear the way for a rehab assignment.

sounds like its worth playing it safe with Andujar. unless they think they really need him once the rest of the guys are healthy, they might be best served going the safer route. (surgery)

If his shoulder is as bad as it sounds he should be a DH only. Playing him at first sounds mighty risky. Strange way to play it with him.

It makes you wonder how many players are actually milking the system, but then again after reading the Forbes Article Hal Steinbrenner is milking the public with no intentions of winning the WS. Just be playoff contenders and bring in the cash. It makes you long for the days when it was a game.

It is a thing! It’s awesome to watch like baseball. I do understand how you feel, though. I found out today that pro basketball is still played in a few cities. I had no idea. Also, there’s a European sport called soccer. From what I gather, London, French, Portugal, Swiss, Rome, and I think Lisbon are the countries that play it. They literally just kick a ball. So yeah, there are all kinds of odd sports still out there.

The worst offender of “milking the system” has to be Ellsbury. He’s missed 2 years basically and hasn’t even had any surgeries. There are guys doing an entire TJ rehab faster than Ellsbury is getting back. This has to be about collecting insurance money. The Yankees don’t seem to care if he ever plays, either.

Insurance investigators need to be on Ellsbury like crazy. I highly suspect he and the Yankees are gaming the medical system to keep his poor play off the field while avoiding financial pain.

Take off the tinfoil hat guys. If the team collects insurance payments on a player, you better believe they have to show all kinds of medical records to prove it. Since when is insurance fraud that easy? And why would a team take such a risk to do it? Was Ellsbury gaming the system when he was hurt so much in Boston? The guy is just fragile

Can’t say I understand why they aren’t just having andujar get the surgery and just get it over with. If he was a vet in the final year of a deal than I could understand, but he’s a young guy and is only going to risk further damage. Get him fixed and hope for better luck next year. Only reason I can think of is to get him in the lineup until the team is healthier, but that shoulder won’t get better on its own.

A torn labrum won’t heal itself. The only hope they have is building up the muscles in the shoulder to compensate for the injury.

The Yankees spent 28.9% on their payroll which is by far the lowest of the 30 MLB clubs. Combine the other 29 teams spent an average of 46.57% of revenue on payroll. The Yankees revenue was 668 million, and the value of the franchise is tops in MLB at 4.6 billion..more than the bottom 6 teams combined. This is really troubling and sad for this lifelong Yankees fan!

Stop bellyaching cereal. Only two teams in the last 30 years were WS Champions AND lead MLB in salary.

If you learn that the season is very long and that it’s the team’s relative health as they approach the post season that really matters then you can stop micromanaging the cascade of injuries.

Though I agree that Yankee fans expect to win every year, and in fact have amazing dominance over time, you should get good at accepting reality.

Last season was not so bad with the injuries that the team endured and STILL WON 100 games. Yes getting our butts kicked by the Sox was no fun however it was their year.

Even they see the difference one season makes.

Stop resentfully counting Hal’s money. Machado nor Harper would make any difference right now. Cash spent the resources smartly with the bandwidth of improvements that he brought in.

The Yankees outspent everyone else many seasons under The Boss and all too often we were not even in the ALCS.

If this you’ve and deep team is so troubling and sad, then I suggest that you change your lifelong status as a Yankee fan and go grab a Shake Shack Burger in Flushing at that teams owners are masked robbers!

fair enough on the need not to spend to 300 million. but are you cool with happ for 17 when you could have corbin for 23?

what about gardy and cc for 17.5 when you could have had harper for 27-30

do you think that with the extra 16-18 mil the yanks should have spent on harper and corbin that they’d be better???

throw in the overpays on dj, britton and ottavino and the Yanks could have spent just slightly more and been a whole lot better.

          ergo Cereal has a point….

Cash F up and this mess is on him. Plus Boone is really useless.

You are obviously a talented negotiator to get Boras Company to sign Harper for one year at 27-30. Open your blinders and stop the single dimension “I’m always right” arm chair GM talk. If you sign Harper, then where do you get the long term money to sign all of the young stars.

The sport is changing. Rather than constantly pontificating it might be a good idea to study what is going on. Its not hard. Teams that sign the Machado’s and Harper’s of the world need to spend crazy and then work to hope that they can fill out the roster around them.

B-T-W, your disloyalty to Gardy and Sabathia is VERY Un-Yankee like. Mind you true Yankee fans don’t give handouts. However both players have value in limited roles on the field and leadership roles.

If you were watching the games this week you would have noticed that Sabathia threw a gem. Which starter would you want to break a Yankee losing streak? And did you watch the kids standing around Gardy after he hit the Grand Slam? What he taught them in 30 seconds was priceless.

SoGee–its time to go back to your undercover alias and start watching Mets games. You are not a true Yankee fan and its obvious to all.

Let’s all just agree, since I am a yankee diehard, until the Yankees have different ownership there will be no more WS titles in the future! They are complete idiots when building a championship caliber team. They had the chance to spend on three quality players and tried to lowball them. Corbin, Machado and Harper would have been a shoo in for the big dance! Instead, they pick up every dumpster player they can find. Waste millions on a bullpen that couldn’t even cut it in High School! Piece together a washed up rotation of has beens and possibles hoping to throw crap against the wall and it stick. Machado 3b, Torres SS, DJ 2b, Andujar 1b, Harper Of, Stanton LF, Judge RF, Hicks and Frazier backing up. Geez, what a ridiculous TEAM! But who am I when I’ve seen them spend money like this to win and build dynasties. Now they just do enough to say they tried.
