We’re all wondering how MLB’s decision to axe the August trade period will influence the way the in-season trade market unfolds. An even bigger rush at the end of July is one obvious possibility; perhaps also there’ll be an increase in early-season trade activity. It has long been fairly rare for significant assets to be moved before well in advance of the trade deadline. The Padres are now reaping the rewards of their decision to market assets early back in 2016, as MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell wrote recently. Nabbing Fernando Tatis Jr. was a nifty trick, of course. As Cassavell writes, both teams were intrigued by his obvious physical talent. The Friars able to pry him loose from the pitching-needy White Sox in part because he simply hadn’t yet appeared in game action. After a productive draft, the club targeted pop-up prospect Chris Paddack, gaining his rights when the Marlins couldn’t wait to secure the services of Fernando Rodney. Interestingly, as Cassavell explains, the Padres’ other notable haul of talent that summer came in the June draft. The club wielded a multitude of picks that year because it chose not to sell the prior summer, instead securing draft compensation for departing free agents Justin Upton and Ian Kennedy.
More from the NL West:
- It’s interesting to consider that prior San Diego mid-season sell-off in relation to this year’s Giants club. If any team could be in position to own the early-summer market, it’s a San Francisco outfit that’s laden with veteran pitching and largely unburdened of immediate expectations to compete. The club’s bullpen has been outstanding in the early going while the rotation has seen solid openings from several elder statesmen. Nearly every member of the staff could be a plausible trade chip; indeed, the Giants have a collection of arms that could suit just about any rival’s needs. In the rotation, postseason hero Madison Bumgarner, long-time workhorse Jeff Samardzija, steady lefty Derek Holland, and higher-ceiling southpaw Drew Pomeranz. On the relief side, southpaw Will Smith continues to pitch like a relief ace, while fellow lefty Tony Watson remains a quality situational asset. Righties Sam Dyson and Mark Melancon are trending up and have ample late-inning experience, while Nick Vincent is an underrated middle relief piece. For Giants fans wondering about the future under president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, the most fascinating pitcher of all may be Trevor Gott, a waiver claimee who’s suddenly generating swinging strikes at a near-elite level (14.7%) after ramping up the use of a four-seam fastball he introduced last season. With pitching problems already rising up for several contenders, Zaidi and co. could be in position for a memorable summer of swapping.
- Star Dodgers first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger exited last night’s game early after being hit by a pitch near his right knee. As MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick reports, x-rays were negative and it seems that Bellinger has escaped any kind of serious injury. The young slugger, who has been on a tear to open the season, may still need some time to recuperate and receive treatment. But there’s no indication that a trip to the IL will be necessary.
- The Rockies have bumped veteran right-hander Chad Bettis to the bullpen, as Nick Groke of The Athletic was among those to tweet. It seems likely his new role will dovetail with the return of Tyler Anderson from a stint on the injured list. Soon to turn 30, Bettis was also bumped to the pen for seven outings last year, though he still took twenty starts. He has struggled to an 8.78 ERA over his first 13 1/3 innings of the 2019 campaign, with eight walks to go with nine strikeouts and twenty base hits already on the ledger. Bettis is earning $3.35MM this year in advance of a final season of arbitration eligibility. In other news out of Colorado, the club seems likely to place outfielder Noel Cuevas on the 10-day injured list after he came down with a quad strain, manager Bud Black told reporters including Kyle Newman of the Denver Post (via Twitter).
- Lefty T.J. McFarland is on the mend for the Diamondbacks, MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert reports. He’ll launch a rehab effort tomorrow as he seeks to finish off a return from a bout of shoulder inflammation. Once he’s deemed ready, McFarland will join Andrew Chafin as a southpaw combo in the D-Backs pen. The 29-year-old produced strong results last year after several rough seasons, working to a 2.00 ERA over 72 frames. Though he carried a typically uninspiring blend of 5.3 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9, McFarland also posted an eye-popping 67.9% groundball rate.

need is a strong word. Every team wants 5 aces. But, I don’t think SD is in great need of pitching. They got a pretty good young core of talent.
Koamalu
The two starters with the most MLB experience are around a 5 ERA. Strahm has two good starts, one really bad start and an era around 4.25. The others are kids with 1 or 3 starts in the majors. Eventually they will take their lumps. All of the AAA starters are pitching poorly, so no help coming from there. 4 of the starters they have used so far are on innings limits and won’t get more than 20-24 starts. Only one pitcher has gone past 5 innings. Need is the right word.
SDHotDawg
That “young core” doesn’t mean squat in terms of wins. They’re still developing, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride this year. Especially without an veteran anchor on the staff. The entire staff – starters and bullpen – is going to be inconsistent and unpredictable all year. It’s the nature of the beast.
larry48
Padres need hitter also average least runs of all NL teams 2.5 runs per game I think
SDHotDawg
Renfroe needs to be in the lineup every day. Reyes is Preller’s new Margot, but he’s not yet good enough to be out there everyday. Not with Renfroe on the team.

Yeah and A.J. Preller got a slap on the wrist when he should have gotten jail time for falsifying medical records which is a felony and punishable by a 250k fine and up to 5 years in jail. Those trades should have been voided and the players returned. He got a 30 day suspension… It was such a joke and such a sad day for baseball that was largely overlooked. The padres cheated and they won. By comparison in f1 when Mclaren stole Ferrari engine specs they got fined 100 million. lol. Padres stole a future star and Preller got 30 days sitting in his mansion. It wasn’t just this trade but many others.
Senioreditor
Jesus you’re naive and believe anything?
purplewidow
how is it naive to think that? The team had 2 sets of medical records.. a real one for internal use and a false one for teams to review for trades. They had meetings in spring training saying just that..Aj Preller ordered trainers to do it.. it was proven.. 4 teams complained to the commissioner about it. The White Sox, Marlins, Red Sox and at least 1 other team. One of the players pitched one game and had to have tommy john surgery right away.. That’s naive? lolol.. Sounds like you’re in denial. Even Preller accepted responsibility. He didn’t fight the suspension because it was a joke and he got away with a felony for a 30 day suspension.
lowtalker1
Um paddock pitched like 2 games and had to get tjs
Anderson Espinoza pitched like 3 games and that was it and hasn’t really pitched since
So keep stepping
Grizalt
Red Sox: traded the Padres Anderson Espinoza in the offending trade. He needed Tommy John surgery.
Marlins: traded the Padres Carter Capps in the offending trade. He needed Tommy John surgery. Also traded the Padres Chris Paddack in a separate trade. He needed Tommy John surgery.
White Sox: traded the Padres Erik Johnson in the offending trade. He needed Tommy John surgery.
Then apparently the Braves were the unnamed fourth team (by the way if you are going to do this at least have the balls to do it publicly) and the player they took issue with was Max Fried. He had Tommy John surgery BEFORE the Padres traded him. Braves knew this and traded for him anyway. They have only themselves to blame. Justin Upton is gone now anyway.
Notice a pattern?
sdpapas
For real. We received more damaged goods than anyone else in those trades. Literally one guy we traded got hurt compared to the 4 or 5 we got.
fw-
You’re right, the Braves knowingly took Fried after he had TMJ because the previous regime liked getting players who already had their major surgeries out of the way and had high ceilings. I never heard the part where they took issue with that. Links please? You make it sound like they regretted it or something lol. I agree with the other poster, maybe you really are just a moron. Based on the things you’ve said in the past it makes perfect sense.
Grizalt
Heard it from a friend who is a Braves fan. Not sure where he heard it but he had no reason to make something like that up.
“… maybe you really are just a moron.”
Yeah, I’d cut back on that.
Injediwetrust
Full disclosure, a Padres fan.. Look Manfred had access to all the information on Prellers past suspensions and all the details on the most recent one and chose to handle the way he did. Manfred has shown with Coppy that if the hammer deserves to be brought, he would do it. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. With that said, you can have the interpretation of what is known or proven. It doesnt make it fact.
Both teams had the choice to rescind the deals. Miami did. Boston didnt. As for Chicago there was sour grapes but as far as I have read a formal inquiry complaint and details were never filed. The forth team, well you cant even name them. Cmon, I get it you think AJ is a crook. Very little of the actual details got out to the public. and the league has moved on. So should you.
Koamalu
Its tough to explain to idiots what really happened because they are not willing go beyond their beliefs to what really happened. I will break it down step by step in simple terms, because its obvious that you are not going to understand anything complicated.
MLB requires all teams to submit all medical information on all players to a central database.
Prior to the 2014 season, Padres President and head of baseball operations Mike Dee told the training staff that only items that required examination or treatment by the team doctor should be reported. A massage or an over the counter medication like ibuprofen for inflammation did not need to be reported according to Dee. He considered this a gray area in the rules.
Preller was hired in August of 2014 with that system already in place.
In July of 2016 the Red Sox acquired Pomeranz in a trade 2 days after he appeared in the All Star game. In the course of his medical examination they found that he had taken ibuprofen for inflammation that was not on the medical reports and they complained to MLB.
This started an investigation of the Padres that found they were not reporting things like ibuprofen and massage and culminated in Preller’s 30 day suspension on September 15th, 2016.
As a result of this case, MLB changed the wording of what has to be reported to the medical database to include treatment that does not require a doctor’s examination and treatment like over-the-counter medications and massage.
As soon as Preller returned from his suspension, Mike Dee was fired by the Padres on October 19th, 2016. Preller was given all of Dee’s baseball operations responsibilities.
Mike Dee has been unable to find a job in sports since being fired by the Padres.
Except to the very stupid, it is obvious who was at fault in this case. Preller took responsibility and was later rewarded by the Padres for falling on the sword for Dee.
Pomeranz never missed one start in 2016 or 2017 with the Red Sox and put up a 3.66 ERA, 2nd best on the team over that period. Only Porcello had more starts from July 15th, 2016 through the end of the 2017 season than Pomeranz did. The Red Sox got their money’s worth.
Anderson Espinoza made 7 starts in the Padres minor leagues with diminished velocity in 2016 before requiring Tommy John surgery in 2017. He has not pitched in a regular season game in the Padres organization since.
I do hope that breakdown makes it easier for you to understand.
fw-
You’re not sure where he heard it but the fact he has no reason to make things up makes it true. Got it.
I never heard anything at the time (that’s why I was suspicious and asked for links) and I googled to see if I could find anything and what do you know nothing came up about the Braves having issues with it.
Thanks for the laugh, and proving my point.
Grizalt
Where did I say that it was 100% undoubtedly true? In your words, “Links please.”
I would like to know who it was tho, regardless of whether or not it was the Braves. Like I said, anonymously putting another GM on blast is kind of lame. If you’re going to do it, at least have the balls to put it publicly.
SDHotDawg
Some people love to dance around the FACT that Preller has no ethics, and he’s been caught THREE TIMES!
He’s the front office equivalent of a cheating slimeball PED user, and it sucks that he’s the GM of my team.
Grizalt
Just like how you love to dance around the FACT that Preller can trade with whoever he wants and doesn’t have to overpay.
SDHotDawg
It’s only relevant if people want to trade with him. Since you’ve already been called a moron once in this thread, I’ll abstain. Time for a new screen name yet Ryan?
Do you realize that defending someone with no etics or integrity speaks to your own ethics and integrity? Probably not.
Grizalt
And they do want to trade for him. Just like the Indians did for Brad Hand. And the Royals for Brandon Maurer and Trevor Cahill. But you didn’t think about all that did you Padrays?
Again, if you can’t provide evidence then Preller can trade with whoever he wants whether you like it or not!
SDHotDawg
Never said he couldn’t. You just making stuff up to compensate for your lack of comprehension. Maybe you’ve noticed that people have caught on to your BS? Changing your screen name doesn’t change your personality.
Grizalt
You said that other GM’s would take inferior trade packages just to avoid dealing with Preller. Do we have any documented cases of them actually doing this?
“Changing your screen name doesn’t change your personality.”
Ditto to you sir.
SDHotDawg
You continue to make stuff up. Are you familiar with the concept known as “deductive reasoning?”
Grizalt
I don’t have to make stuff up like you. The facts don’t lie and the facts say that the Padres have made plenty of trades since Prellergate happened.
AlexB
Know what’s up with the Padres (old) reputation for being cheap? Both the Werner Ownership Group and John Moores are Jewish. Average fans still think the Padres are cheap.

Neither was the Shields for FTJr

Stop confusing some of our less knowledgeable Padres fans with facts. It interferes with their irrational man-crush on Preller.
It was the Pomeranz deal that got him busted. And for good measure (and a sense of guilt?) he gave back a top prospect for a “damaged” starter.

The Padres didn’t report to MLB that Pomeranz took ibuprofen. Pomeranz did not miss a start for the Red Sox. Espinoza has spent the last 2 years recovering from Tommy John surgery and has not pitched yet this season. He had a 4.73 ERA in low A in 2016 after the trade. Jail time? You need to get back on your medication.

I’ve been holding off on having an opinion about Farhan until after the trade deadline. Hopefully he validates my optimism.

Farhan will likely be fine. You could put a monkey under Friedman and hed probably go on to be a world series winning GM
24TheKid
So the monkeys smarter than Friedman?
RiseAgainst3598
Marginally, but yes
jekporkins
Your two statements seem to contradict each other. And your second sentence would be more scathing if the Dodgers actually won a World Series.
RiseAgainst3598
Obviously the monkey being better than Friedman was a joke. And I’m not even a dodgers fan but tell me another GM regime that has been as successful as his. How many teams have been able to find tons of diamonds in the rough while also successfully developing their own players? Everyone knows the playoffs are a crapshoot and even making the world series two years in a row is an incredible feat. you cannot blame those world series losses on the gm and anyone who learns how to build a team and depth as well as the dodgers (I.e. Farhan) should be able to be successful.

Non Subject,let’s see in June
disgruntledreader 2
It’s pretty weird to talk about the Padres’ reboot of their system in the summer of 2016 and not mention their $80M spend on the international market that July. Adrian Morejon, Luis Patino, Tirso Ornelas, Jeisson Rosario, Gabe Arias, Tucupita Marcano, Ronald Bolanos, Jorge Ona, Agustin Ruiz, Justin Lopez, Luis Almanzar… even guys who haven’t made it out of the complex yet like Quintero, Miliano and Manny Guzman. That IFA class will dwarf the total WAR of the class they signed out of the draft (which I say even as someone who’s high on Reggie Lawson).
Crazy to think that of that draft class, the top three might very well wind up being the guys who got away: Hunter Bishop, JJ Bleday, and Ryan Rolison.
bleacherbum
Love me some Reggie Lawson.
The most under rated Padres prospect that doesn’t get talked about as much as he should imo
Koamalu
Not really sure what you see in Lawson. He has been extremely inconsistent and had an ERA over 5.00 going into the 2019 season and has pitched very poorly in his 2 starts so far in 2019.
disgruntledreader 2
He’s excited because he’s not scouting the stat line.
SDHotDawg
What’s interesting is that Preller was allowed to exceed the international signing alotment to the tune of a 100% penalty. In effect, the Padres willingly paid double for every player they signed.
Grizalt
Apparently you missed Ryan Rolison’s tweet about President Obama. Bullet dodged on him not signing.

The only good point for the Giants is the pitching but they are useless if they can’t score runs. Pretty sad when Brandon Crawford is their leading hitter on batting average and he’s hitting .228.
Frisco500
Giants are in a great position to add key peices for future runs. If you are really worried about their current state of offense, go watch golf or stop pretending to be a Giants fan. Or maybe you’re not a fan which would explain a lot.
disgruntledreader 2
Can you explain how they’re well positioned?

From the article: “If any team could be in position to own the early-summer market, it’s a San Francisco outfit that’s laden with veteran pitching and largely unburdened of immediate expectations to compete. The club’s bullpen has been outstanding in the early going while the rotation has seen solid openings from several elder statesmen. Last year I watched EVERY game, 162 games despite how frustrating the team was. I lookup Giants news at least 5 times a day. I bought MLB AtBat so I can watch Giants games and I travel to SF multiple times a season to go to games.
Did you consider for a second maybe I’m a REAL fan that is just frustrated beyond belief at how bad they hit year after year yet? SF continued to employ Bam Bam as their hitting coach despite consistently bad numbers from the hitters. Then they promoted the guy to Bench Coach!!!
Oh and before you blame the park, every other teams seems to hit better than the Giants when they play at AT&T/Oracle.
So dude, before you muse as to whether I’m a fan or not, realize that fans have every right to be critical of their team. SF went below the CBT last year and they have plenty of money to sign some real hitters.
Koamalu
@deke NBC Bay Area Sports broadcast 142 games. KNTV Channel 11 broadcast 15 games locally. 2 games were carried nationally on ESPN.
Some games are missing from that 162.
claude raymond
Koamalu, there’s Fox and the mlb package and games he went to. And welcome to the age of Internet. And this thing called Facebook.
If in fact he did miss a game, and you have ACTUAL knowledge. Then share THAT with us.

I agree with Deke. Being a die hard Giants fan is very frustrating right now. SF may have thee worst offense in baseball. Posey’s offense has been enemic for multiple years now. To start the season with Reed & Joe as ur corner OF’s is pathetic. Why not sign a Nick Markakis, who was available all off-season, to a 1 or 2 year deal while your franchise is in transition. Plus, having a veteran like Markakis can only help your younger guys. They can see firsthand what one does to be a very good MLB player for a long time.
SDHotDawg
Good for you, Deke! On the Padres side, we have a lot of fans who don’t understand that being critical of your team is part and parcel of being a fan.
You’ll find that mostly, it’s just the same 6-7 people who try to dominate certain forums with their low baseball IQ pablum who will say you’re not a fan if you aren’t part of their echo chamber.
Fight the good fight. The worst is yet to come.
claude raymond
Frisco500, they’re in a great position because as the article stated they have many desirable pitchers which is what’s Deke is saying. And when he says that pitching is being wasted because they’re not hitting he’s stating a fact. You’re criticizing the guy for not being a true giants fan? I’ve been a fan since 67 and when I say they’re not hitting that’s got nothing to do with loyalty. It’s a fact, BUT they can still come around. There are TONS of stars that aren’t even at the Mendoza line right now.
As July 31 nears, if the giants have not hit themselves into contention, teams will try to “outbid” other teams for giant pitchers. That’s why, disgruntledreader they’re well positioned. Btw, disgruntled, I haven’t done anything but repeat what the article stated.
Please read better dgr

In other words, rebuild.
claude raymond
You’re welcome. But I do disagree with you on the Meulens criticism. I did used to put blame on the hitting coach. But I don’t anymore.
The hitting coach isn’t responsible for batters trying to pull breaking balls away. Or batters not shortening their swings on 2 strike pitches. Any pitcher is crazy to throw anything in the zone when he’s ahead in the count. In Tyler Austin’s first game (or second?), he worked a 3-1 count. The next 2 pitches were in the dirt. He swung at them both and Kd. This pitcher was clearly struggling in that at bat and yet still got a strikeout.
Austin was new to the team. Coaches fault? No way. Aramis Garcia wasn’t hitting in minors until he was called up. Hanson hit better than he had elsewhere. Coach’s credit?
Meulens almost coached the Netherlands to the finals of the WBC. And if he got promoted to bench coach and you put blame on him for his hitting coaching, then you should happy about his promotion.
Look, as I said earlier, many good hitters all over the league are struggling right now but they’ll likely hit their norm. So maybe the giants bats can do the same. But that’s up to them, not the hitting coach.
kenleyfornia2
Bumgarner and Will Smith are the only major trade pieces they have. And neither will.add a blue chip prospect. Yes they missed the boat on trading Bum. They will get comparable to the Yu Darvish trade for him
claude raymond
How’d they miss the boat? You think the bidding for him before the season would outdo the bidding before the deadline? They didn’t even know if he would be back to normal come opening day
Grizalt
At the deadline they only get him for 1/3 the season and can’t QO him.
claude raymond
You’re right. What was I thinking? No one ever gives up prospects to get a 2 month player for a post season run.
And with the way free agents are (aren’t) getting signed (Kimbrel, Kueichel-sp?) players would be crazy to not accept the higher than ever QO.
You got me padresfanatic. And clearly you knew he’d be trade worthy in February when other teams were waiting to see how he’d start the season
Grizalt
I like how the first and third part of your comment was in sarcasm mode then the middle part wasn’t. Leave the snark to people who are good at it.
Oh and losing 2/3 of a year of control and QO eligibility certainly can’t help his trade value.
claude raymond
The middle part should have read “to accept” instead of “to not accept”. My mistake.
But it’s ur mistake to not get that the QO means nothing when’s it comes to making a post season run trade. And I’ll repeat, since you’re struggling with this concept, no one knew if he was worthy of trading for before the season. Do you think that teams needed that information cuz they were concerned about the QO?
Grizalt
Having the right to QO a player is absolutely a positive for the team. And I don’t think a pair of fluke injuries change how teams view Bumgarner.
claude raymond
You got me again. You win
SFGiants4ever
Padresfanatic…while the end of the contract does not help, if he is pitching as well as he has so far (except one start) come the trade deadline he will most definitely bring in a top prospect and then some. Ask the Yankees how they did trading Chapman at the end of contract a few years ago, give you a hint they got someone who almost won ROY out of the deal.
That being said, I’m still one of those fans that does not want to see Bum pitch anywhere else in his career, but maybe the Giants can pull a Yankees move and resign him after they get a couple of prospects for him.
Grizalt
Bumgarner didn’t have a domestic violence suspension hanging over his head. Huge difference.
And yeah I can see them trading him then trying to bring him back.
SFGiants4ever
Even more reason to say that Bum can bring in a blue chip prospect if he is pitching well despite the contract situation. Chapman got the yanks Torres from the cubs. A healthy solid Bum should easily attract the same.
bleacherbum
What does Bundy and Givens cost currently? A package w/those two does a lot to fix the current Padre needs.

Sticking to the plan where the Padres have the strongest farm system in baseball and pitching is the strength of that system and the plan where better pitchers will be up for grabs in FA next offseason as opposed to last.
csspackler
Free agency (obviously) has already been part of a flexible plan. (In hindsight, I wish Hosmer wasn’t included, but ….mistakes are going to be made no matter what) However, the club has acquired enough assets now to use in trade … and if they’re in position to compete in July, they can (and will) do so.
Fans want solutions … right now. Plug the holes … right now. Well, it doesn’t work that way. Improving is incremental, and it is not linear. If you haven’t seen that by now then I don’t know what to tell you.
These guys started this process in 2016. I said at the time 2016 was a watershed year for the franchise What they said and did back then — with that draft, with the J2 signees, and with the trades (Paddack, Tatis) — is starting to happen now.
Can they win the division or even get a wild card this year with the current staff? No. They cannot. Pretty sure they know that.
Grizalt
Hosmer wasn’t really hindsight considering 1st base was already filled and the only other team willing to give him $100m guaranteed was the Royals which was more for sentiment’s sake than anything else.

I know this has little to do with this article but the Giants trades prior to the 18 season continue to look worse and worse. Reynolds is having a great start to the season at AAA, you know the Giants OF could have used him as a call up option later in the season, and Crick was great last season and is expected to be a big piece for them this season too. Arroyo is having a good start to 19 for the Rays and their AAA team as well.
Those terrible trades took away prospects and added salary that will continue to haunt the Giants.
If they make trades this season, hopefully they are much smarter trades.
BondsAway
Derek Holland, W. Smith, Pomerantz, & Bum can all bring in top prospects. And waiting until deadline to trade Bum will benefit SF immensely. At the deadline GM’s get pressured by fan base & they have limited time to make decisions. Do you know what happens when people are pressured & have to hurry up & make decisions? They get desperate & make mistakes
