Yankees Acquire Jake Barrett

By Jeff Todd | April 4, 2019 at 1:40pm CDT

The Yankees announced today that they have claimed righty Jake Barrett off waivers from the Pirates. Fellow right-hander Ben Heller was shifted to the 60-day injured  list while he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery.

Barrett already spent the offseason bouncing between rosters; now he’s doing so again to open the season. He’ll start things off at Triple-A with the New York organization, where he’ll represent a depth option should a need arise in the big league pen.

As we’ve now discussed several times in recent months, Barrett is looking to rediscover the form he showed back in 2016, when as a 24-year-old rookie, he gave the Diamondbacks 59 1/3 innings of 3.49 ERA ball with nearly a strikeout per inning. He’s posted a 5.03 ERA in 34 big league innings since that time and spent most of 2018 at Triple-A, pitching to a 2.87 ERA with 11.3 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9 over 53 1/3 innings.

The Yankee players spent to much time reading on how good they are when they should have been working out. The fans are saying what the F#*+!?#*.

First thing I thought when I read the article was, “With the luck they’ve had so far, they best pick up six or seven depth options…”

Sometimes you don’t need a lot of information to know what you need to know. I could’ve done it in one sentence: once-promising and still reasonably talented reliever that has moved on the waiver wire four times in the past few months.

The fact that the Yankees put SS in the hands of Tulo for the first half of the year is borderline comical. They need to be signing OFs & INFs as depth right now.

If it wasn’t for this unexpected injury epidemic that couldn’t have been predicted they would’ve survived a stretch or two of games without Tulo easily. Andujar at 3B, Torres at SS, and LeMahieu at 2B as a starter, and Wade as the backup IF. I don’t think any team is prepared for injuries to the insane extent that the Yankees have been hit with.

as a mets fan i disagree. We have to assume the entire the entire opening day roster will be injured and we need a strong AAA team to atleast be competitive. This is what the new GM assumed atleast this year.

Tulo should have signed somewhere to DH. His bat still has life and he might be able to stay off the IL for half a season. Then again it’s Tulowitzki, he would probably get a grade 4 strain swinging at something low and outside.

Almost as comical as Yankers assuming Jacoby Ellsbury would make everybody forget about Bernie a Williams in center field.

I went to junior high with Jake Barrett. Everyone made fun of him because he would have huge sweat tacos under his armpits before 1st period even started. Lol. Now he throws 95 so who got the last laugh there

Maybe they should have signed Harper or Machado. Their business model is be just good enough to make money, no more, no less. The offseason was a total head scratcher.. Hal needs his DNA checked, no way he came from George..

They should be nursing an injury now if they did. If I was a player, I might be telling my agent to only talk to the Yanks if no one else was interested.

Hey Gozo. Your post makes no sense. In case you are not aware, what matters is the team’s record at the end of the year not the beginning. And it may be hard to wrap your little pea brain around the concept, however what matters is who is on the IL during the post season roster, not in April.

So man up, declare your team and let’s see what happens over six months.

I was talking about the rash of injuries that have, befallen the Yanks and player’s desire to remain healthy. Making light of what some fans think is a jinx in such situations. Perhaps you need to wrap your brain around the fact that not all of us take everything literal and do not feel the need to defend the team we root for so vehemently that we feel the need to insult what we don not under. Lighten up Francis!

@Louisbeans. What players do you think the Yanks should have signed? Remember, anyone who, would have signed during the off season woul not have been offered a starting job to sign or even a spot on the 25 man roster. That limits who might sign with a team.
