Angels Activate Justin Upton, Designate Cesar Puello

By Jeff Todd | June 17, 2019 at 3:18pm CDT

The Angels announced today that Justin Upton has been activated from the injured list. He’ll take the active and 40-man roster spots of fellow outfielder Cesar Puello, who was designated for assignment.

It’s obviously good news for the Halos to finally welcome Upton back to the active roster. He hasn’t yet suited up owing to a turf toe injury that proved surprisingly problematic. The slugger is a key piece of a roster that has not performed as hoped to this stage of the season.

That said, the L.A. org won’t be able to hope for much of a production bump over Puello. The 28-year-old has produced a hefty .390/.500/.683 output with three home runs in fifty plate appearances this year. That far outstrips anything he had shown previously, though it’s fair to note that Puello has been a steady offensive producer in the high minors for several seasons.

Cesar Puello showed he can play a little. His short stay here has served him well.

Someone might try to trade for him first. I know it’s a short sample size but hitting .390 with a little pop to go along with it – it’s hard to imagine some team in need of OF depth not trying to trade for him before he winds up on straight out waivers. they’ve go like what? 7-10 days to work something out after designating him. seems like someone out there will offer at least like some international bonus pool $ or something along those lines at the least.

I don’t think they have a choice. I thought he had options, I was wrong.

Tovar doesn’t have any options left either, which means that Rengifo might be sent down when Simmons comes back.

I hope not. Tovar hasn’t shown much at all. Rengifo needs more ABs, but at least he has potential to be an every day player. Tovar, not so much.

So you get rid of the guy hitting
    .390? OK then…..

.390 over 50 plate appearances. Let’s not get carried away. Goodwin is better defensively and having a good enough year offensively to stay up.

Tough choice between Puello or Goodie for a 4th outfielder. I think Goodie showed more and seems more athletic….oh, and left handed. I feel like the Halos made the right choice. Hope to see a follow up that we keep Puello somehow… but that seems unlikely. Mostly good news to see J Up back…now Simmons is next. But can they pitch? We need more pitching than anything…this summer should be fun! Go Halos!

Can they pitch? Not enough. Even if Heaney and Canning and Skaggs pitch to what I believe they are capable, it’s not close to enough.

Next year, if the those three pitch like I think they can. And Ohtani comes back, and they get a really good pitcher in the free agent market. They’ll easily be a 90+ win team.

Those are a lot of if’s and that’s really all you can hope for.

Cole is coming home next year and will give us a stellar rotation.

He literally just explained what he enjoyed watching, chill with the troll comments, it’s like freaking out with 7 minutes left in the second quarter of a basketball game. Theyre literally 3 games back of the playoffs.
