Indians Sign Mitch Talbot

By Jeff Todd | June 6, 2019 at 10:41am CDT

The Indians have added right-hander Mitch Talbot on a minors deal. The Cleveland organization acquired his contract from the indy ball Sugar Land Skeeters and assigned him to Triple-A.

Talbot spent time with the Columbus Clippers last year after four seasons away from the affiliated ranks. He threw well in 17 starts and one relief appearance. Over 103 2/3 frames, Talbot ran up a 2.52 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9.

With the Indians needing to backfill depth after losing another top starter in Carlos Carrasco, it’s not surprising to see them turn to the former second-round pick. Talbot, 35, is well known to the Indians from his first run with the organization back in 2010-11, during which he made forty starts. He owns a lifetime 5.30 ERA with 5.0 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 232 2/3 total MLB innings.

They have enough off days they don’t need anyone until the 15th (likely Clevinger) then the 18th (Plutko possible, or could be Civale). The issue isn’t just Carrasco. They’ve also lost Jefry Rodriguez, Cody Anderson and Chi-Weh Hu in the past week, all starting options on the 40. They just need people to take starts for Columbus.

After seeing the title of the article I was hoping to read they signed him as a consultant, not a pitcher.

Big Lots is having a special on barrel bottom scrapers this week.

Masahide Kobayashi joining the Columbus bullpen soon?

Perhaps a deal to bring back Ubaldo Jiminez?

Come on all-star break. Lets get it here and over, so the rebuild can begin. Wait. In that situation, we might just need these guys. Nevermind. :)

They’ll bring back Scott Lewis from the seemingly dead and Mike Gosling will come out of retirement.

Bartolo “Big Sexy” Colon would have been a much better story and signing

If the Indians signed Bartolo they would have had to pay him more. Dolan isn’t down with that.

Ha.. Nice work, it MUST be about money. It couldn’t possibly be that Bart is 300+ lbs, 46 years old, and has an ERA around 6 over the last two seasons.. why would you want him (even at the league minimum)?

I remember when he first came up, how fit and much thinner he was. I also remember watching him get larger yearly, and wondering if it would ever stop.

          Nope.

He was smaller than now but never fit. Orel Hershiser shares of his nickname he had when he came up, he was named something stupid like “Bumpy” or something after the exercise bike. He was forced to ride that because he was always so far out of shape.

    What a terrible signing. A 35 year old with a 5.30 ERA, 1.646 WHIP, 10.6 hits/9, 4.2 BB/9 and barely 5 K/9? Many better ones to choose from.

Terrible? All he’ll probably end up doing is starting in Columbus.

It is very likely that he was signed simply to fill a hole at AAA. Much like he did last year… Not saying it impossible that he gets to the majors, I just don’t see him being Plan A (or B, C, or D). But best of luck to him! His numbers looked great last year with Columbus.

Expect more and more of these signings (or sighings). But don’t forget the simple joy that in June of 2019, right after the sadness of the revelation that Carrasco is sick, the Tribe won consecutive games against the division-leading Twins! It is good to celebrate victories and not get bogged down in bad news, as real as the bad news is.
