Mets Designate Carlos Gomez, Activate Noah Syndergaard

By George Miller | June 30, 2019 at 1:55pm CDT

Per an official team announcement, the Mets have designated outfielder Carlos Gomez for assignment in order to make room for pitcher Noah Syndergaard, who has been activated from the injured list.

Syndergaard landed on the 10-day injured list on June 16 with a hamstring strain that forced him to exit his last start early. After spending two weeks on the shelf, Thor is on track to start Sunday’s series finale against the Braves. Thus far, Syndergaard hasn’t been able to produce the results we’ve come to expect from him; his 4.51 ERA is markedly above 2.93 mark he posted between 2015 and 2018. His 3.61 FIP paints a somewhat more promising picture, though even that is considerably worse than his previous numbers.

With Gomez out of the picture, the Mets will proceed with 13 pitchers on the active roster for the time being. Due to Dominic Smith’s emergence as a viable left fielder, Michael Conforto has stepped into a regular role in center field, leaving Juan Lagares as the team’s fourth outfielder and making Gomez relatively expendable.

However, it’s not just roster crunch that’s pushing Gomez off the roster: he has not been especially impressive in his 99 plate appearances with the Mets, slashing a mediocre .198/.278/.337 with 30 strikeouts. While his .616 OPS is a notch above Lagares’s dreadful .514 mark, Gomez has graded out poorly as a defensive center fielder; Lagares, on the other hand, benefits from a solid reputation as a defender. Now it looks as though Gomez, who was in his second stint with the Mets, will see his time with the team come to an end.

I think he’s done. An average below Mendoza leaves most teams with a better option.

Glad Gomez is gone he’s so bad. Hopefully Lagares is next.

Lagares is a great defensive replacement and pinch runner.

Not anymore. Fangraphs has him at -3.1 UZR. He’s dead weight. DFA him.

Can we also leave Familia in the minors forever?

To do this we need to figure out how Cashman did this with Ellsbury. I mean cmon, he made the man disappear for what 2 years basically?

I don’t think there’s any ethical way to replace a persons internals entirely with glass. You have to be born that way.

Hey roll… track your own team…that looks like a full time job. Your beloved hid David Wright. Right?

The difference is David Wright actually tried coming back and had a confirmed degenerate disease with pretty regular updates of his progress to the one disease/injury. This all with the Mets saying Wright would come back (posturing by wilpons im sure).

Ellsbury on the other hand keeps having “injuries” while on the dl.. The yankees tried trading him the last few offseasons/mid season saying he was healthy but somehow never made it to the field. Then spring training starts with the yankees and all of a sudden he is hurt with another injury hardly any baseball activities? Whether Ells is going the Pavano route or Yanks are just doing it for the insurance and cap who knows but both get what they want.

Ok. How about the couple of seasons that Reyes stayed in Florida with hamstring issues? Lol

the secret is he paid him very handsomely, so Elsbury has no incentive for coming back

Tickets and merchandise sales. Do you actually think the Wilpons won’t be all over that? Plus the Mets aren’t going anywhere.

if it’s tebow time, tells you the mets are 100 percent out of it.

but i do wonder when they call him up which guy gets the fake injury to open up a 40 man roster spot? (since even the wilpons aren’t stupid enough to cut someone just to open a spot)

I’d rather they DFA’d Noah and kept Carlos. Carlos is a real POSITIVE force on this team.

Technically, Carlos Gomez is “GoGo” not “CarGo” Well. Was “GoGo” back when he was 30lbs lighter and was fast.

    ” slashing a mediocre .198/.278/.337 with 30 strikeouts”

In what world is that line mediocre?

In all fairness, he probably got hit with a little poor luck based on his hard hit rate and other peripherals. That said, he also owned a 20% IFFB rate. Seems to me the Mets didn’t exactly give GoGo a long leash.

It’s to be expected when he just doesn’t have the speed to effectively cover CF anymore. GoGo can only blame himself for his conditioning issues.

Hey John-to answer your question, it’s in “Mets World”’that this type of performance slash line would be described as mediocre. This is a franchise that has been run into the ground. There is Wilpon family incompetence coupled with apathy with regards to consistent investment.

There is no longer pride in anything that they do. As one of the recent examples,!during the 50th celebration of the 1969 team, who proof read the list of deceased players, before the names showed up on the video board? Has there been an apology to the two members of that team who’s photos were included in the presentation AND are STILL ALIVE.

The situation is now desperate. The Wilpon’s should be held accountable. Time to boycott Chitifield and NOT watch SNY.

Just do the fire sale already and rebuild for the wild card in 2021.
Trade Syndergaard, Matz, Vargas, Frazier, Gsellman, Lugo, Wheeler, Ramos, Calloway, every coach not named Chili Davis, Nimmo and Lagares. If this team can’t be a .500 wild card contender WITH these guys, than send them away and start over.

Thats a good idea but I would keep Nimmo. He’s young,a positive presence in the clubhouse and he can get on base. Just because he’s had a slump to start the year doesn’t mean he’s useless.
