MLBPA Hires Carlos Gómez

The Major League Baseball Players Association has hired Carlos Gómez, per Tenchy Rodriguez of Z101. The former big leaguer will be a special assistant to MLBPA executive director Tony Clark.

Gómez, now 38, retired in 2021 after a 13-year career in the big leagues. He played in 1,461 big league games between the Mets, Twins, Brewers, Astros, Rangers and Rays. He hit 145 home runs and stole 268 bases while providing excellent outfield defense, leading to a career tally of 25.9 wins above replacement from FanGraphs.

It seems his post-playing days will see him get involved with the union, which has naturally been in a prominent role in recent years. After a few decades of relative labor peace, Major League Baseball locked out the players in the 2021-2022 offseason. A new collective bargaining agreement was eventually agreed to, which saw significant changes, including increasing pay for younger players, big bumps in the luxury tax, measures to decrease service time manipulation and more.

Beyond that, the MLBPA also began representing minor league players and eventually worked out a new CBA between those players and the league. That agreement led to pay increases for minor league players as well as some medical and pension provisions and other details. Another wrinkle was just reported last night by Jeff Passan of ESPN, who relays that the union is now certifying agents who only represent minor leaguers. Previously, an agent needed to represent at least one 40-man roster player.

Carlos Gomez Officially Announces Retirement

Former major league outfielder Carlos Gómez officially announced his retirement this afternoon in a ceremony at Milwaukee’s American Family Field (video via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com). The announcement finalizes the end of a 13-year major league career.

Of course, there hasn’t been much doubt that Gómez’s playing days had already concluded. The 35-year-old last played in the majors in 2019, and he hasn’t played professionally since wrapping up a stint with the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Winter League between 2019-20. Reports out of the Dominican Republic in January 2020 indicated Gómez’s playing days were likely coming to an end, but he hadn’t publicly finalized that decision until today.

Gómez ceremoniously hung up his spikes as a Brewer, with whom he had the best run of his career. Acquired from the Twins over the 2009-10 offseason, the electric center fielder spent the next four and a half seasons with the Brew Crew. At his peak, Gómez was one of the sport’s top power-speed threats. Between 2013 and 2014, the right-handed hitter posted a .284/.347/.491 line with 47 home runs. He chipped in 74 stolen bases over those two seasons while playing Gold Glove-caliber defense.

Gómez earned down-ballot MVP support in both of those campaigns, and few players could match his well-rounded skillset. Over that two-year stretch, Gómez ranked seventh among all position players in FanGraphs’ version of wins above replacement, trailing only Mike Trout, Andrew McCutchen, teammate Jonathan Lucroy, Buster Posey, Miguel Cabrera and Josh Donaldson.

Milwaukee traded Gómez to the Astros at the 2015 deadline for then-prospects Brett Phillips, Domingo Santana, Josh Hader and Adrian Houser. It proved an opportune time for the Brewers to add an influx of young talent still helping the team immensely today, as Gómez’s productivity was never quite the same from that point forward. As he entered his 30’s, Gómez bounced around the league with a few clubs. He ended his playing days with the Mets, ironically the team that initially signed him as a 16-year-old back in 2002.

Gómez appeared in the majors with six different clubs over the course of his career, although he’ll be best known for his peak in Milwaukee. He appeared in 1461 MLB games and hit .252/.313/.411 with 145 home runs, 236 doubles and 41 triples. Gómez stole 268 bases, scored 675 runs and drove in 546. He appeared in two All-Star Games and won a Gold Glove during his aforementioned star-level peak. FanGraphs and Baseball Reference each valued his career at around 25 WAR. MLBTR congratulates Gómez on a very fine career and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors.

Carlos Gomez Will Reportedly Retire

Longtime major league outfielder Carlos Gomez plans to retire once his season in the Dominican Winter League wraps up, Rolando E. Fermin of La Neuva 106.9 FM reports.

Gomez’s big league career began and ended with the Mets. He debuted in the league in 2007 as a highly touted youngster, but the Mets traded Gomez to the Twins in a package for then-superstar left-hander Johan Santana in the ensuing offseason. Gomez’s tenure with the Twins also proved to be short-lived, though, as they dealt him to the Brewers in a trade for shortstop J.J. Hardy in November 2009.

Gomez didn’t truly blossom until he got to Milwaukee, and he plans to retire as a member of the organization, according to Fermin. He posted star-level production at times as a member of the Brewers, with whom he slashed .267/.325/.452 and amassed 87 home runs and 152 stolen bases across 2,576 plate appearances from 2010-15. Gomez was especially outstanding from 2013-14, a 1,234-PA span in which he batted .284/347/.491, swatted 47 homers, swiped 74 bags and ranked seventh among position players in fWAR (12.4).

Unfortunately, Gomez’s output dropped off a cliff after his career-best two-year run. The Brewers traded Gomez (and sign-stealing whistleblower Mike Fiers) to the Astros in a 2015 blockbuster, which came after an attempt by the Mets to re-acquire him fell through. The Gomez pickup proved to be a failure for Houston, which released him in 2016 after he fell flat in an Astros uniform. Gomez wound up staying in Texas that year, though, as the Rangers took a low-cost flier on him that worked out well for them. He stayed with the Rangers the next season and once again recorded respectable production, but he was ineffective as a member of the Rays in 2018 and once again struggled in a Mets homecoming last year.

All told, the 34-year-old Gomez will end his MLB career a .252/.313/.411 hitter who totaled 145 HRs, 268 steals and 24.9 fWAR in 5,227 trips to the plate. He earned two All-Star nods and made just under $50MM in his playing days, according to Baseball-Reference. MLBTR wishes Gomez the best in retirement.

Carlos Gomez Elects Free Agency

Veteran outfielder Carlos Gomez elected free agency rather than accept an outright assignment from the Mets, per the International League transactions log. He was designated for assignment over the weekend.

Gomez, 33, ripped a trio of home runs in his brief reunion with the Mets — including a go-ahead three-run shot not long after being selected from the minor leagues. However, his overall body of work in his return to Queens, where he made his MLB debut as a 21-year-old back in 2007, proved underwhelming. In 99 trips to the plate, the two-time All-Star and former Gold Glover hit just .198/.278/.337 with 30 strikeouts.

Gomez had a solid season with the Rangers back in 2017, but his brief All-Star peak from 2013-14 is now a distant memory. Gomez batted a combined .284/.347/.491 with 47 homers, 74 steals and strong defense in that stretch, racking up 12.3 WAR along the way. Since that brilliant pair of seasons, he’s hit a combined .236/.311/.395 in 1863 plate appearances. He’s not the elite runner he once was, but Gomez still possesses above-average speed (79th percentile in average sprint speed, per Statcast) and is experienced at all three outfield spots, making him a reasonable minor league pickup for a team in need of outfield depth.

Mets Designate Carlos Gomez, Activate Noah Syndergaard

Per an official team announcement, the Mets have designated outfielder Carlos Gomez for assignment in order to make room for pitcher Noah Syndergaard, who has been activated from the injured list.

Syndergaard landed on the 10-day injured list on June 16 with a hamstring strain that forced him to exit his last start early. After spending two weeks on the shelf, Thor is on track to start Sunday’s series finale against the Braves. Thus far, Syndergaard hasn’t been able to produce the results we’ve come to expect from him; his 4.51 ERA is markedly above 2.93 mark he posted between 2015 and 2018. His 3.61 FIP paints a somewhat more promising picture, though even that is considerably worse than his previous numbers.

With Gomez out of the picture, the Mets will proceed with 13 pitchers on the active roster for the time being. Due to Dominic Smith’s emergence as a viable left fielder, Michael Conforto has stepped into a regular role in center field, leaving Juan Lagares as the team’s fourth outfielder and making Gomez relatively expendable.

However, it’s not just roster crunch that’s pushing Gomez off the roster: he has not been especially impressive in his 99 plate appearances with the Mets, slashing a mediocre .198/.278/.337 with 30 strikeouts. While his .616 OPS is a notch above Lagares’s dreadful .514 mark, Gomez has graded out poorly as a defensive center fielder; Lagares, on the other hand, benefits from a solid reputation as a defender. Now it looks as though Gomez, who was in his second stint with the Mets, will see his time with the team come to an end.

Carlos Gomez Hires MVP Sports Group

Veteran outfielder Carlos Gomez has hired MVP Sports Group to represent him, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter). Gomez had been with the Boras Corporation, which negotiated his extension with the Brewers and various ensuing free agent contracts.

Gomez, 33, has been a fixture in the majors since 2008, his first full season in the bigs. He debuted the year prior with the Mets, but ended up being shipped to the Twins in a major swap that altered the fates of both franchises. Gomez did not fully hit his stride until years later, when he broke out with the Brewers and enjoyed a brief spell as one of the game’s most productive outfielders.

Now, Gomez is back in New York. He inked a minors deal with the Mets over the winter and recently joined the MLB roster when an opportunity opened due to injuries. He’s playing well out of the gates, with three base knocks (including one well-timed home run) and three walks in twenty plate appearances.

There’s no reason to think that Gomez will ever revisit his days as a star center fielder. But he was a quality all-around MLB roster piece as recently as 2017, when he slashed .255/.340/.462 with the Rangers. If he can bounce back from a rough ’18 campaign and carve out a place on the Mets roster, Gomez could again be seen as a solid outfield target when he returns to the open market this coming winter.

Mets Designate Keon Broxton

The Mets have designated outfielder Keon Broxton for assignment, Tim Healey of Newsday reports on Twitter. That opens the door for Carlos Gomez to join the club’s MLB roster for the first time since his debut season with the club way back in 2007.

Gomez’s ascension was reported previously, so it comes as no surprise. Of course, something came up the last time we thought it was inevitable we’d again see him in a Mets uniform. (He instead landed with the Astros; it’s fascinating to consider the alternate universe.)

In other moves, also largely anticipated in advance, the Mets recalled righty Paul Sewald and placed outfielder Michael Conforto on the 7-day concussion injured list. Conforto’s injury is a concerning one for the team; it’s still not clear what kind of absence is anticipated.

Broxton came over from the Brewers in the offseason after failing to fill the center field opening created by Gomez’s departure. The defensively proficient 29-year-old seemed to be somewhat redundant with Juan Lagares already on hand, but the Mets evidently thought his upside was worth a chance.

Things just haven’t worked out at all for Broxton. He saw limited action in New York and struggled badly when he did get in the lineup. In 53 plate appearances this season, he carries a .143/.208/.163 batting line with 22 strikeouts. Though it’s still possible he’ll be snagged on the waiver wire, his appeal is limited by the fact that he is out of options.

Mets To Select Carlos Gomez

The Mets have informed veteran outfielder Carlos Gomez that they will select his contract from Triple-A Syracuse, per Mike Puma of the New York Post (Twitter link). He’ll join the club as Michael Conforto lands on the injured list due to a concussion.

The 33-year-old Gomez was a top prospect with Mets back in 2006-07, was traded as one of the focal points of the Johan Santana blockbuster, and nearly returned to the Mets prior to the 2015 non-waiver trade deadline. He’ll now suit back up for his original organization more than a decade after his MLB debut.

Gomez is a career .253/.313/.412 hitter who slashed .284/.347/.491 with the Brewers during his 2013-14 All-Star peak, but he’s coming off a season in which he managed a mere .634 OPS with the Rays. He’s gotten out to a strong .270/.329/.500 start through 140 plate appearances in Syracuse, where he’s hit six homers, nine doubles and a triple in addition to collecting five stolen bases (albeit in 10 attempts). He’ll join an outfield mix that currently includes Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, Juan Lagares and Keon Broxton, although the Mets will need to make a 40-man move to accommodate Gomez, and Broxton has struggled mightily so far in 2019.

Mets Assign Six NRI Veterans To Minor League Camp

The Mets have cut several veterans at Spring Training on minor league contracts from their Major League camp.  Carlos Gomez, Adeiny Hechavarria, Rajai Davis, Hector Santiago, Ryan O’Rourke, and Devin Mesoraco are the non-roster invitees who have all been told they aren’t making the Opening Day roster.  (Tim Healey of Newsday was one of several reporters who passed on the news.)  Of note, Mesoraco didn’t have an opt-out clause in his contract, though the Mets said that the catcher is “reassessing his situation” with the organization.

Mesoraco, Hechavarria, and Davis each had upward mobility clauses in their contracts that went into effect last Wednesday, though there hasn’t been any word on whether any other teams had interest in any of the trio.  This doesn’t appear to have been the case for Mesoraco, as Mike Puma of the New York Post reports (Twitter link) that Mesoraco has informed the Mets that he won’t go to Triple-A, and wants to be released.  Mesoraco is even prepared to retire if he isn’t granted his release, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter).

Mesoraco’s situation is perhaps the most surprising, as indications were that he would serve as the backup catcher, since Travis d’Arnaud is likely to begin the season on the injured list.  This could mean that a change in d’Arnaud’s status, or that the Mets would simply instead prefer to use another internal candidate in Tomas Nido as Wilson Ramos’ backup.

The Mets’ outfield situation was already pretty crowded, so Gomez and Davis faced something of an uphill battle in winning jobs.  Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto have everyday jobs spoken for, while Jeff McNeil will get at least a share of the left field playing time, with Keon Broxton and Juan Lagares serving as backup outfielders.

O’Rourke pitched quite well in camp while Santiago struggled, though in the end, the Mets chose to take neither left-hander on their Opening Day roster.  This will leave Justin Wilson and Luis Avilan (another minor league signing who is likely to make the team) as the southpaw options out of New York’s bullpen.

The Hechavarria news bodes well for Luis Guillorme’s chances of winning the utility infield job.  McNeil will also see some time in the infield mix when he isn’t playing left field, and J.D. Davis looks to be the team’s top option at third base for the time being.  Of course, the Mets’ infield situation will be in flux once Todd Frazier and Jed Lowrie are healthy.

Friday, 11:48 AM:The Mets have reportedly struck a deal with free agent outfielder Carlos Gomez. The @BigDaveRants account first tweeted the news, which has been confirmed since by several reports. It’s said to be a minor-league pact, pending a physical.

Memorably, Gomez nearly became a member of the Mets in the summer of 2015. At the time, he was a star center fielder and the New York club was readying for a stretch run at the postseason. The deal was all but done before things fell apart.

The undoing of that swap created huge ripples still being felt. Gomez ended up being swapped instead to the Astros in a deal that worked out terribly for Houston but didn’t prevent the club from finding its own successes. That trade helped spur the Brewers’ recent resurgence.

Meanwhile, the Mets hung on to Zack Wheeler, who’ll now be a key member of the rotation after his own 2018 renaissance. The other piece of that trade-that-wasn’t,  Wilmer Flores, provided one of the trade deadline’s indelible moments when he shed some tears on the field following the reporting of the deal. (He was non-tendered this fall and landed with the Diamondbacks.)

Looking to the present, the deal makes for a somewhat interesting match. Gomez will obviously need to earn his way onto the roster after a forgettable 2018 season for the Rays, but he had a productive stop with the Rangers before that and only just turned 33 years old.

The Mets already have a host of left-handed-hitting outfielders, but are less certain from the right side. Gomez could push Juan Lagares and Keon Broxton in camp. While those younger options have much better gloves, Gomez is the most accomplished hitter of the bunch — though Broxton has been a similarly productive offensive performer (despite worrying strikeout numbers) over the past three seasons. It could be that Gomez will end up serving mostly as a depth piece while auditioning for other teams, but there’s about a month left in camp and circumstances can always change.
