The Tigers announced that they’ve reinstated right-hander Jordan Zimmerman from the 10-day injured list. Zimmermann, who hasn’t taken a major league mound since April 25 because of a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, will start Wednesday. Zimmermann’s nearly two-month absence added injury to insult in what has been a terrible Tigers tenure for the 33-year-old. A run as a front-line starter for the Nationals convinced the Tigers to give Zimmermann a five-year, $110MM contract entering 2016, but he has come up way short of expectations since then. Now 33, Zimmermann owns a 5.29 ERA/4.92 FIP with 6.34 K/9, 2.26 BB/9 and a 36.7 percent groundball rate in 427 innings as a Tiger.
- Yankees southpaw Jordan Montgomery seemingly isn’t recovering as hoped from June 2018 Tommy John surgery, as Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. Montgomery exited a live batting practice session Tuesday after throwing 15 pitches. Manager Aaron Boone said afterward Montgomery “had a little discomfort.” The Yankees hope Montgomery will be able to help their pitching staff later in the season, Ackert notes, but that seems even less likely now. The 26-year-old functioned as a full-time starter from 2017-18, a 182 2/3-inning span in which he recorded a solid 3.84 ERA/4.09 FIP with 8.23 K/9, 3.10 BB/9 and a 41.4 percent grounder rate.
- Angels righty Trevor Cahill will make a rehab start Friday with Triple-A Salt Lake, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register was among those to report. Cahill has been on the IL since June 8 with soreness in his pitching elbow. The offseason signing got off to a horrible start before then, as shown by a 7.18 ERA/6.37 FIP in 57 2/3 innings.
- The shoulder MRI that Mariners righty Felix Hernandez underwent Tuesday didn’t show any new issues, per Greg Johns of MLB.com (Twitter links). As a result, Hernandez – out since May 11 – will resume his rehab, likely throwing a few bullpen sessions before taking the ball again in the minors. Meanwhile, teammate and fellow righty Sam Tuivailala will begin a rehab stint at the Single-A level Friday. Tuivailala, a July 2018 Mariners trade acquisition, has been out since last August with a right Achilles injury.
- The White Sox have placed southpaw Manny Banuelos on the 10-day IL with shoulder inflammation and recalled righty Carson Fulmer, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times tweets. This is the second time in 2019 that shoulder issues have sent Banuelos to the shelf. Injuries have been a common theme throughout the pro career of Banuelos, once a well-regarded prospect with the Yankees. The 28-year-old has pitched to an ugly 6.90 ERA/6.78 FIP with 8.28 K/9, 5.91 BB/9 and a 33.3 percent grounder rate in 45 2/3 innings (13 appearances, eight starts) with the White Sox this season.

Cahill is on the mend. Is that a good thing?

What is going on with Carson Fulmer? RP, SP…

I can’t believe he is up.
Perhaps someone interested in a trade.

Who knows? Looking like RP for now. His stuff has looked significantly better this year based on the eye test (basically regained what he had in college), but the results have been just slightly better in his short stint with the big club. He was looking really good in AAA until his last 2 or 3 games, which took his ERA from under 3 to right around 4. His K’s are up pretty substantially, which is nice, but he still loses command of the strike zone way too often. If he can keep the ball in/around the zone, he might have a chance to turn into a big league reliever at some point with his improved (regained?) stuff.
Either way, pretty disappointing that he was the Ace of Vandy’s loaded staff and couldn’t put it together at the next level. Almost as disappointing as Gordon Beckham not being able to adjust to big league pitching.

Is it me or do we only have 4 starters on the current roster, again?
Priggs89
Unlike last month, they actually have some off-days in June, so I don’t think they’re too concerned about that at the moment.
I think they’re more concerned about how inconsistent everyone not named Giolito has looked. Their overall numbers make it look like they have been horrible all year, but that’s really not the case. Between Lopez and Nova’s 30 starts, they have been good-to-great in 15 (8 for Nova, 7 for Lopez) and bad-to-brutal in 15. It really is amazing how good they can look one night and how awful they can look the next.
Aaron Sapoznik
It’s getting close to Dylan Cease time on the South Side of Chicago, especially if he can regain the command he had all of last year in A+/AA ball and into the beginning of the 2019 season at AAA Charlotte. He’s struggled in his last few outings but that didn’t keep GM Rick Hahn from stating recently that Cease is nearing his MLB debut.
Rallyshirt
It does seem like a while since Lopez racked up those 14k’s in 6. I guess I’m wondering now if Carson has anything to do with the Collins call up. Maybe he catches for him?
Rallyshirt
@sapoznik I believe Cease only has two pitches. Once his change up is good to go, then he might be ready. If not, I’m worried he might get lit up.
GarryHarris
To think, no one wanted James Shields and his 204 IP, 154 SO and 4.53 ERA.
Aaron Sapoznik
Btw: The White Sox do have 4 scheduled off days in the next 2-1/2 weeks before the All-Star break but that also included a double header versus the Tigers on July 3rd. However, they do have a stretch of 6 consecutive games beginning at Texas on Friday and continuing into Boston through next Wednesday. They currently only have 4 starting pitchers on their active roster so they will need a 5th starter unless they go with a bullpen game. They currently don’t list a starter for the Saturday game in Arlington so that will be something to key on.
Aaron Sapoznik
Dylan Cease has 4 pitches in his repertoire. His best two are a 70-grade fastball and 65-grade curve. He also throws a slider/cutter along with a changeup (m.mlb.com/prospects/2019/?list=cws). Command has been his biggest obstacle which he got under control (lol) last season when he was the minor league pitcher of the year.
Rallyshirt
@Garry Agree, there’s probably more to that story. Especially with the Ervin signing. They might have thought rebuilding Ervin could be a tradable asset where Shields might not have any value other than a one year fill.
Rallyshirt
@Sapoznik I’m swimming in some deeper water right now. 🙂
I like the Whitesox community in here, I read all you guys. I’ll be keeping a closer look on Cease.

I always thought that Fulmer would be better in the bullpen. Think kinda like a career path along the line like that of Andrew Miller.
Rallyshirt
Fulmer reminds me so much of Peavy in how he handles himself. I just wish the results were even close.
Idioms for Idiots
I haven’t been keeping track, but I would have to think Fulmer’s about out of options, which if he is, it means this is most likely his last chance for the Sox (I would think another team would take a flyer on him).
I think Fulmer will be their 5th starter, though more in an opener role. In other words, he will be on a very short leash every time out. They see what happens from there.

Funny how a few experts on here claimed it was a given Montgomery would be back this season. I called them on it and was blasted.
PepperoniPapi
I’m with you there. It ain’t easy being rational on the internet. Not only was it never a given that he’d even make it back this year, but I think his profile tends to have the most variance in return from TJS. Lower velocity guys who rely on command and finesse have less room for error. Even if Monty was healthy there was a decent chance he wouldn’t have been much better than what the Yanks have been running out there this year. So many missed opportunities to add depth.

TJ can’t be rushed and that’s what they were doing with montgomery.
PepperoniPapi
I think Aaron Boone had said earlier that Montgomery was headed up to NY from Tampa for a shoulder MRI, but that they were “just being cautious.” Yikes though. You know they’re going to find something. There are some weird kinetic chain anomalies going on with their training staff this year. I know most of this stuff is really just bad luck, but definitely worth a look in the mirror in regard to organizational methodology.
driftcat28 2
Was a big fan of Montgomery during his rookie season. Really disappointed that he’s had a set back. Would love to see him back in the rotation and improving
jorge78
Wrong link to Jordan Z. Missing an N at the end of his name.
DGHalos714
Not sure if the Halos should even put Cahill back in the rotation. I think him and Harvey should be long relief and let the kids start. Especially since both Cahill and Harvey look good for a few innings then their wheels fall off…I guess one way to look at it is at least we have extra pitching at the moment…?
robbie71
gonna be a big ol dumpster fire at the copa tonight!
Matt_Angel_Bronco_Laker
For the love of God, cut Cahill and Harvey.
costergaard2
Connor, you have the link to the wrong Jordan Zimmerman…
MiggyCabby24
Zimmermann has been absolute garbage, during his tenure with Detroit. Mr Illitch didn’t get any return on that investment.
LostYankeeinexile
With Severino taking some serious time to get back, Gumby down… German hurt and working his way back, just worried some desperation pitching trade is coming. Anyone else feeling that or am I worrying for nothing? I mean we need pitching … but not just a body to fill the void. We need a legitimate ace
EvilEmpire
Not many Aces period. And even fewer available. I’d love a Max or Madbum. But we might have to settle for less.
LostYankeeinexile
Max is the only one I’d like. MadBum has a great history…. but is in a downhill side in a pitcher friendly park. I wouldn’t give up much for that and they’d probably ask for a haul. If we wait until the offseason there are a few 2 -3 types available that won’t cost us prospects… but Free Agency is a gamble too
skip tracey
I don’t remember how Banuelos came over to the Braves but I do remember his trips to the IL. So it doesn’t surprise me that his shoulder woes continue. Another highly regarded prospect taken down by the injury bug.
Thomas Bliss
He was part of a New Year’s Day trade with the Yankees for David Carpenter and Chasen Shreve.
zaneduarte
Tui already began his rehab stint…10 Innings pitched with a 2.70 ERA in A and AAA. How did they print this and not catch it?
Louiebeans
I’m waiting for Brett Garbage’s set back where is it?
To all the Yankee fans question Clint Frazier on how he feels and how he’s talking to the media. How do you expect him to react? He’s done nothing more then prove himself, shows that he belongs here and not in AAA anymore. But the Yankees rather run out a almost 40 year old 200 hitting LF with no power. Find a way to get him into the lineup daily. The kid wants to be part of the team and not traded. He proved that
