Latest On Yasiel Puig

By Connor Byrne | July 30, 2019 at 7:05pm CDT

7:05pm: There are “mixed opinions” in regards to Atlanta’s interest, per Heyman, who names the Indians and Rays as teams that seem to be eyeing Puig. He’s not the first right-handed slugger Cleveland and Tampa Bay have been connected to in recent days.

6:45pm: The Braves, known to be on the lookout for outfield help, have shown interest in the Reds’ Yasiel Puig, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

The outfield may not have been a significant concern for the Braves until they lost starting right fielder Nick Markakis to a fractured wrist over the weekend. Markakis will likely be on the shelf until sometime in September. In the meantime, the Braves will continue trying to maintain their lead in the National League East. They currently hold a 4 1/2-game advantage over the Nationals, who were 7 1/2 back just a couple weeks ago.

As things stand, the Markakis-less Braves have Ronald Acuna Jr., Austin Riley, Ender Inciarte and Adam Duvall as their top four outfielders. Aside from the great Acuna, there’s no surefire producer in the bunch. The rookie Riley began his career with a flourish, but his numbers have plummeted as the season has progressed, and they’ve been especially woeful in July. Inciarte, normally a solid all-around player, has been rather poor at the plate this season. And though Duvall (acquired from the Reds last summer) was a 30-home run hitter twice in a row in Cincinnati from 2016-17, he was so subpar between Cincy and Atlanta in 2018 that it took Markakis’ injury for him to earn a call-up to the Braves’ roster this year.

Enter Puig? The Reds are reportedly open to dealing the ex-Dodger, whom they acquired in the offseason. Puig’s a pending free agent, so unless the out-of-contention Reds plan to extend or qualify him, it would make sense to trade the 28-year-old this week. The mercurial Puig got off to a terrible start this year as he began his Cincy tenure, but he has been far better over the past several weeks. In all, Puig owns a .254/.304/.478 line with 22 home runs and 13 steals (18 attempts) across 401 plate appearances. Meanwhile, Puig has continued to serve as an asset in right (3 Defensive Runs Saved, 0.7 Ultimate Zone Rating), per defensive metrics. He’s also reasonably priced, albeit not cheap, with a $9.7MM salary.

Lol puig for ender. Get outta here. Gonna cost more than a “low prospect”. Could just QO him and get a 31-37 overall pick in the draft next season.

That’s assuming you are ok with making the QO and not getting stuck with him at that price. Some teams, like the Reds for instance, might not think that to be a wise budget decision.

You are making the assumption Puig would turn it down and then be signed by someone willing to probably pay more than the QO amount AND give up a pick. As we all saw this offseason, that is no longer a given.

Puig for a lower prospect is a legitimate offer given it’s for 2+ months.

No way I’d QO Puig if I were a team. He’d definitely accept it. There’s no way ya he’d make as much as the QO as a free agent. At least not on a aav perspective. He’d accept it and then enter free agency the next off season without the QO arched

He was not a mid-season add. As long as the baseball season may seem to some fan bases, it does not cover December 21st.

EDIT – Caveat … I might be missing something with the MLB ‘official calendar’ and what they consider in-season though. For all I know they have some of the stupidity of the NBA around draft time.

Haven’t you learned by now, stud free agents in their prime don’t sign with the White Sox. Machado close the F’n Padres, not the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, BoSox (none of which even made an offer) but the PADRES over the White Sox, in spite of Rick and Kenny desperately signing all of his crappy friends/family. You know this, quit getting your hopes up. Again, the last legitimate free agent (in his prime) that signed with the White Sox was over 25 years ago and it was Albert Belle or Joey Belle or whatever and he was legit crazy. Face it, Rick and Kenny are gonna have to somehow complete this “rebuild” without signing free agents and without drafting/developing well. It is what it is. No wonder you obsess over anything and everything Cubs, anything that distracts you from the clown college on the south side… I don’t blame you. Haha

Harvey was not a clubhouse issue in Cincinnati. Having a player finish a season out is not “nothing”. That playing time clearly outweighed the potential return.

Harvey’s clubhouse issues are well documented. That why he’s been DFA’d twice already. And having Harvey finish out the season with them was nothing for Cincinnati unless you can come up with some empirical evidence that their record this year would have been worse if they had traded Harvey when they had the chance.

I don’t care if he rides his bat like Happy Gilmore around the bases, I will take that bat and arm for the next two months if the cost is low enough. We have a bunch of guys who we could trade that would be better than a comp pick. Guys like Beck or T Riley should be enough, maybe a Burrows even.

I wouldn’t give up Ender for Puig in a heart beat. Enders plays with a team friendly positive energy and Puig plays with an energy that I think is a huge distraction to his team. I think the Braves are one team that Puig could fit into as we have a great mix of young guys and Vets to help keep him in line and also appeal to the kid in Puig.

But I’m not gonna give up much at all for him for a 2 month rental. I think he would be a good OF in Atlanta but I’m happy with the current Duvall at the moment who had to overcome adversity to get where he is. I’m all for a guy who had to go through some struggles coming back and mashing.

Puig would also just add the one of the best benches in baseball.

Would be interested to see how you Braves fans feel about dropping any kind of notions of trading for Thor & Diaz, turning the attention towards the Reds & Indians? With the Reds, Puig, Iglesias, & Amir Garrett using Johan Comargo, Joey Wentz, & Kolby Allard (or some sort of a combination of mid tier prospects). Then shifting focus to Trevor Bauer? I think the Mets ownership are going to run from an NL East team & the Yankees from having any trade coming their way, Bumgardner stays, Grienke’s contract is just too much. My feeling, there is absolutely no reason to trade for bullpen help if Atlanta doesn’t also go get that ACE starter. Minor, Boyd, & Robbie Ray combined with what Atlanta currently has in the rotation will not beat the Dodgers. Atlanta has to have 1 of 4 in the rotation for a shot at the pennant: Thor, Grienke, Bumgardner, or Bauer

Okay, doesn’t look like Greenie is the answer to close. Maybe it’s about time the Braves recall Folty, and in a move similar to the Smoltz move they made in the ’90s, make Folty our closer?

Let him throw heat and his signature sinker at max effort for an inning. Remember, this guy was a #1 draft pick and he struck out over 200 batters last year. Too much talent to be wasting away in AAA IMHO.
