Cardinals Acquire Zac Rosscup

By Jeff Todd | July 29, 2019 at 4:41pm CDT

The Cardinals have acquired lefty Zac Rosscup from the Dodgers, per a club announcement. He had been designated for assignment recently.

Cash considerations are going to Los Angeles in return. Rosscup will begin his tenure with his new organization on optional assignment at Triple-A.

Rosscup, 31, has already appeared with three other clubs this season. He owns a 5.16 ERA in 83 2/3 career innings at the game’s highest level, averaging a healthy 12.2 K/9 but also an ugly 5.9 BB/9. The free passes have been a particular issue this season.

In other moves from the Dodgers, utilityman Kike Hernandez is going on the 10-day injured list with a sprained hand. The club optioned down righty Jaime Schultz while activating just-acquired infielder Kristopher Negron and calling up righty reliever Josh Sborz.

There’s nothing about grabbing a DFA’d guy that suggests Mo did it “instead of” trading for Watson or somebody else. If it happens in May it’s a footnote. It happens in July and it’s “typical Mo.”

If they don’t make a move to strengthen the team, that’s subject to criticism irrespective of Rosscup.

Grabbing a minor leaguer off DFA waivers for cash is equivalent to trading a AA prospect for a bad starter who’s going right into your rotation?

Trading a bad AA prospect for a bad pitcher is what the Brewers did. Quit acting like who the crew gave up is going to be the next Verlander. Trash for trash.

Trying to improve an Achilles-heel rotation by adding Lyles =/= adding an arm to the AAA team.

        • CrewBrew

Yet that Achilles-heel rotation still has us in the hunt and will be adding more. Cards most likely will be going on a hunt for more DFA pieces.

The Cub’s have no choice to dumpster dive with their self imposed financial restrictions and lack of Minor League talent. They have the 3rd highest payroll in MLB. The front office has blown up the payroll with disastrous free agent signings-Darvish, Morrow, Chatwood, Heyward. True Heyward turned things around a bit this season but still not even close to earning the huge contract.

It accomplishes adding depth. That’s it. There is a grand total of ZERO risk. If he doesn’t pan out, then great. Thanks for the depth. If he does, then even better, he produces at the major league level for free.

Same comments when they signed Bud Norris to a minor league deal. And Matt Wieters. Sometimes these guys produce in significant ways. And if they don’t, whoop dee doo, the team loses nothing.

The guy has no prior success, so don’t compare him to veterans. He also, at 31, can’t be looked at as a prospect. The move can only be looked at as depth if you literally only mean a roster spot.

I’d rather see a younger player getting time at AAA than a proven below average 31 yr old.

Off topic but why is Pederson still playing 1B? That is a failed experiment with enough of a sample size. The front office realizes that the runs scored by opposition due to Pederson’s deficient defense count? And why do the keep playing Pollock? I know that they spent a lot of money on him, but the best current lineup against right handed pitchers is to sit Pollock, play Pederson at LF, Verdugo at CF and Beaty at 1B.

Typical Mozeliak. Low hanging fruit. Shreve had a plus 4 era when they got him from the Yankees last year. The Cardinals always talk about building a division winner, but always do enough just to keep the fans coming. We always point the finger at Mo, well I think that it’s time to start pointing the Finger at DeWitt, because If was just Mo, DeWitt would’ve been fired him.

This is about the best he can do anymore!!!!! Live with it. ——- The DeWitts are not going to let him go!!! This is what Cardinal Nation has seen over the past 5 seasons or since Ludlow left. As per the DeWitt’s……They’d like to extend his contract as long as the team stays playing over .500 baseball.
