Padres, White Sox Interested In Nomar Mazara

By Mark Polishuk | July 25, 2019 at 8:48pm CDT

Reports yesterday from Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News indicated that Rangers outfielder Nomar Mazara was drawing interest from rival teams.  Grant mentioned that Mazara was getting looks from teams who weren’t necessarily contenders this season but were looking to contend in 2020, and today Grant specified that the Padres and White Sox were two of the clubs scouting Mazara.

San Diego is something of an odd fit for Mazara on paper, as the Padres already have multiple corner outfield options on hand.  Franmil Reyes and Hunter Renfroe have both performed very well this season, the struggling Wil Myers isn’t likely to be going anywhere due to his contract, Travis Jankowski and Josh Naylor are the two primary options in the minor leagues, and Franchy Cordero could also rejoin the mix if he gets healthy.

Then again, Padres GM A.J. Preller was the Rangers’ director of international scouting when Mazara was first signed to a then-record $5MM bonus by the Rangers back in 2011.  It wouldn’t at all be surprising if Preller feels a move to a new environment could help Mazara become a consistently productive big league player.  It’s also possible the Padres could create some space in the outfield with some trades for pitching over the next week, as the club has been linked to a long list of starting arms over the last several months.

Chicago has Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert ticketed as their respective left and center fielders of the future, though while Leury Garcia has been a useful player, the White Sox could prefer to land a player with more upside like Mazara.  Garcia has been one of several Sox players who have generated some trade interest as we approach the deadline, though Chicago isn’t considered to be too interested in moving players, as the club has their eye on contending for the AL Central in 2020.  Between Jimenez’s debut, breakout performances from Lucas Giolito and Yoan Moncada, and other young talents who are on the verge of the big leagues, the Pale Hose seem to be on the verge of properly ending their rebuild.  (Of course, they almost did so last winter in their push to sign Manny Machado, before losing him to the Padres.)

Be a great idea for the White Sox. They won 63 games in 2013, and their last winning season was 2012. Yet, their claiming this is the 3rd year of ‘their rebuild’!!! Hahaha.
Reinsdorf would love it since he wouldn’t have to spend much money.

He is 24 years old so I guess u can still believe in upside but Mazara is a bat only hitter who really not that good while playing half his games in a very hitter friendly park. Worst he comes with a 3 to 1 SO to walk rate. Rangers would be selling low, but to keep him work with him and hopes he can turn his career around.

State of Illinois should raise the lease fees the Sox pay for Guaranteed Loss field, err I mean Guaranteed Rate field. They pay less when attendance is down. If that was reversed, maybe Reinsdorf would spend money to actually try to make the team respectable.

I don’t think you can seriously be a fan of the Sox or Bulls and think Reinsdorf is a good owner. He hasn’t spent at the top of the market in MLB free agency since Albert Belle and he tried to lowball Michael Jordan. Plus he consistently rewards loyalty over competence in his front offices.

I was waiting for the Padres interest in Mazara to be reported. It seems like Preller is still trying to acquire any prospect he ever signed while with the Rangers.

With the Padres lineup being so right handed heavy, a deal for a left handed hitting outfielder with still some upside, does make sense though. I wonder if the Rangers would be interested in Franmil Reyes? Moving Reyes would open up a spot for Mazara in San Diego and Reyes in Texas would/could be a beast!

      Seriously?

Mazzara = career WAR of 1.1 in 1,908 ABs, with 2 years left.
Reyes = career WAR of 1.9 in 570 ABs. with 5 years left.

To make this fair, you should ask SD to throw in Tatis.

If Preller thinks he can get the best out of Mazara, one his his signings, I’m sure he would be willing to deal Reyes, not one of his signings. The Padres need better balance in their lineup and Mazara would also help with that.

And for the record, I am a Padre fan, not a Ranger fan. If the Padres could get someone else in the deal that Preller still has high hopes for, so be it.

White Sox would be a good fit. Mazara fits with the rest of their bright future. I am not sure why the Rangers would potentially give up on the 23/24 year old.

He’s poor defensively and extremely slow. He’s played four years for Texas and hasn’t made any improvements offensively. He’s an average player. Some people might think he still has untapped potential. The Rangers are tired of waiting.

NOT a good fit. There are plenty of reasons Texas is looking to move him, and those are reasons that should make the Sox think twice. Add him to the new “mix” including A.J.Reed, Ryan Goins, and Jimmy Cordero and you’ve begun to define a roster that’s going nowhere but down, down, down. Has anyone with the Sox ever thought about acquiring players who’ve demonstrated the ability to perform at a high level in the major leagues? All we get lately are retreads, veterans desperate to hang on, or yesterday’s hot shots who have all but fizzled.

Goins has impressed since being called up. Reed was a low-risk chance, as was Cordero, and are presumably both there just to see if they can flip them for better prospects at the deadline. Now with that deadline quickly approaching and them both no good, I can’t see them sticking in any sort of future plans.

I can see the Padres interest, especially w/ the emergence of Tatis Jr and of course signing a young superstar in Machado. I can see them contending as soon as next year, but the White Sox?! Seriously? They’re two years away from MAYBE being two years away. An unproven, inept front office that was so clueless they thought they were “All in” just a few years back (ironically when they traded the eventual top prospect is baseball for James F’n Shields) and then ended up with a worse record than teams actively tanking. They need to figure out how to draft, scout, develop and at some point convince legit stud ML free agents to sign there before they can even think about contending.

The Padres will be legit really soon.

You have that much time on your hands to troll teams you shouldn’t have any interest in? That would be like me going on Marlins or Reds or Orioles message boards and trolling them. What’s the point?

Since I remember you, you’ve been on Sox message boards quite a few times trolling. When’s the last time you went out of your parents’ basement and walked outside? Has it been months?

Same regurgitated comment over and over again. Only thing missing is you saying that Giolito and Moncado are busts..weird. Also, if your going to talk smack do some research. The “All In” season was 2011 when they signed Dunn. This was the pre-season marketing campaign used to sell tickets. That was the year they signed Dunn (yes terrible outcome). Shields was traded for prior to the All Star break in 2016 but they never said “All In”. You made that up. You’re fear of the SOX becoming a good team so TRANSPARENT and you’re completely INEPT when it comes to making an original unbiased comment/argument.

Padres ain’t going to trade for him, preller is interested in almost everyone and checks in all the time but that doesn’t mean it’s genuine. Also he’s probably fine doing the rangers a favor to get them a better return for him

It doesn’t matter who the white sox get. They won’t know what to do with them, Except tell them, we’re going to be a really good team in 2020. In the meantime, We’re going to play for next year draft pick. So just hang in there. Our farm system come through for us and they’re cheap!

Mazzara for Dunning & Burger would work for me as Burger is basically blocked
Even if he starts to produce.

Feels like a rumor planted by the TX GM. Why would SD want Mazarra? I understand acquiring post-hype prospects and trying to redeem them, but he has nowhere to play in SD with Reyes, Renfroe, and Myers occupying two corner spots.

Fake news. Padres gotta blow out Myers as part of any deal.

Myers looks anemic-weak on his new diet and yoga plan, jow about working out with weights and putting about 25 lbs of muscle on that frame. You look terrible at the plate and for $20M/yr. your a JOKE

This is would be a good move for the White Sox if they don’t have to give up Robert or Walker along with any pitcher and go after Cole and some bullpen help in the offseason.!

I would think for this guy a straight one on one swap anything more is a waste, this Ranger guy is below ave.

Robert isn’t going anywhere. They paid a boatload of money just to sign him, and he has shown exactly why so far this year.

This is why the Rangers suck and will continue under JD. Odor is the big problem in that lineup as he can’t hit a lick….all he does is swing for the fences. Sell high on Minor and Lynn and get the rebuild in full on mode.

AJ what does it take for you to understand the Padres lead the league in K’s, we need a guy who doesn’t K every third at bat who is above ave. defensively and can hit at least .285 with some speeed. Is that so difficult not some flub from the Rangers. Please read Money Ball, AJ get a clue.
