Wheeler, Vazquez, Bumgarner, Minor All Held At Deadline

By Jeff Todd | July 31, 2019 at 3:09pm CDT

Though deals can and will still trickle in after the formal end of the MLB summer trade period, there are specific reports indicating that several top trade candidates will not be changing hands.

  • Mets righty Zack Wheeler is staying put, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post (via Twitter).
  • The same is true of Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi (Twitter link).
  • There was no last-minute deal for Giants hurler Madison Bumgarner, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal tweets.
  • Mike Minor is staying in Texas, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tweets.

Nah, I’d rather keep May and Lux. For the 5-6 innings he would’ve pitched in a 7 game series, I’d rather have 6.5 years of a stud 2B and frontline pitching prospect. We’ll find a setup man somewhere in the org.

Once again, Vazquez guarantees nothing. Way too many Pirate fans think that Vazquez has some sort of supernatural power that guarantees the acquirer a WSC.

When is the last time a closer guaranteed anything?

I expected, Liriano, Kang and Melky to get delt, but just lyles and dickerson.

I mean I wanted pitching and catching depth but not horribly disappointed. I rather the pirates do little and not make it worse than blow it up and watch the world burn.

Can hear the afternoon talk guys now…..Kicking the can down the road and would not trade anyone. and act like the Pirates could have moved Marte and Vasquez and it was all their fault for not moving either of them. Like always, they will forget to mention that apparently what they were being offered for either was no where near what they wanted. They make it sound like NH just has to pick up the phone and some other GM will make a great offer for the players in question. Drives me insane.

when cervi starts they are 15 and 17

Hard to say if Felipe Vazquez’s trade value will ever be higher than it was at this year’s deadline. I think their asking price must have been too high, but he still should have been able to net them several valuable assets.

If u look at what Chapman got years ago in a rental capacity… it’s tough to beat that package. Vasquez has years of control so chances r his value wont drop in the next year or even 2. So y not get some “free” use of him and next deadline or the one after get the same or better package than u would have gotten this year

I said if they lost because of bullpen failures. If it is because of the lack of offense or if the starters fail, yes, Vazquez would not matter. If the starters do the job and the offense scores some runs and the bullpens can’t hold leads then NH has a chance to get what he wants.

Unless a seller feels desperate, it should be a return that ‘hurts’ the contender a bit to give up in terms of legit prospect(s) coming back. Only time will tell if certain contenders are good enough settling for lower end BP or rotation pieces compared to those that stayed put.

I agree. Wheeler is a decent-enough SP, and this will give the NYMs a fine rotation next year.

But adding another $17M, plus arbitration increases, probably pushes them to $190M+.. Even assuming Diaz becomes good again, they certainly need to add to the BP. I’m not sure they can catch Atl/Wash even with all the extra spending.

They are #14 in the NL. That’s one good reason.

And he could have production issues like Diaz.

Too bad the Dodgers and Pirates couldn’t work out a reasonable trade which would have benefitted both sides. All in all, I’d still much rather be in the Dodgers position than the Pirates. The Dodgers can still win the World Series this year, and also be in contention for years to come. The Pirates could have had their catcher for the next several years in Ruiz plus another really good pitcher or two not named Dustin May. But, hey, the Pirates will still have Vazquez. I guess what’s really most important is keeping one guy when they could have had two or three younger guys who would have helped them for years.

We don’t want Ruiz, and a deal without May or Lux is a nonstarter.

Truth is LA did nothing this deadline. That’s not on Huntington. He got rid of the two guys I wanted him to. Dickerson and lyles.

Pirates are not trying to win this year, the dodgers are. Me, as a pirates fan, I’d rather have the nightmare.

The Marlins didn’t want Verdugo for Realmuto. I hope they’re happy with who the Phillies gave them over Verdugo. Ruiz will end up being better than Will Smith, so it’s great that the Dodgers were able to keep him.

If and when the Pirates trade Vazquez, we’ll see if what they get will be better than Ruiz and the one or two young pitchers the Pirates might have had from the Dodgers.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers will keep stockpiling young players and have what they need in house. That way they won’t have to deal with the unrealistic expectations of a team which thinks the Dodgers have to make up for all of their bad trades of recent years, none of which the Dodgers had anything to do with. The Pirates now think like the Marlins. That should make Pirates fans feel mighty proud.

      Pirates need pitching and catching.

Dodgers could part with a catcher, but they wouldn’t part with a pitcher.. so no deal.

I can defiantly understand the dodgers not wanting to part with Lux.. but i don’t understand May (which IMO was the biggest sticking point) If i’m not mistaken dodgers starters are in a pretty good position the next couple years with out May….?

      Reply
      • alanofla

The Dodgers didn’t want to trade May because he will be the fifth starter in 2020 or one of the long guys out of the bullpen, with Urias or Stripling joining the rotation. Kershaw, Buehler, Ryu (who is a free agent but will likely stay), Maeda, and Urias/Stripling/May. Hill is a free agent and I can’t imagine he returns unless Ryu leaves for a stunning offer from the Yankees or Giants or another team in a city with a large Korean-American population. L.A. has the oldest and largest Koreatown in the U.S., so I doubt he would leave unless he was offered stupid money. Koreatown in L.A. has murals and large posters of Ryu all over that section of town. He is beloved no matter what kind of year he has.

The Pirates probably could have had Gonsolin and he did well at Coors Field last night. Ruiz and Gonsolin is a really good deal. The Dodgers might have even added a second quality pitcher if the Pirates had been more reasonable. The Dodgers unloaded the weak guys like Brock Stewart, Rocky Gale, and Tony Cingrani today. Cingrani went as part of the Gyorko deal, as it should have been.

The bottom line is that I really don’t think Friedman offered a package that was remotely insulting. It just didn’t include two or three of the Dodgers top five prospects., no matter how badly some Pirates fans wanted that to happen.

          4.4ish years of vazquez

Gosolin would be nothing but a ‘tossin’ hes 25, just got to AAA this year and did poorly and they threw him in in the majors.. with out a change hes nothing more a swing man.

the pirates need controlled pitching.. that means May or Urias (who would be turned back into a starter) and to a lesser extent Stripling (not all three, but May and one of the two)

and by your own admission he’d be the 5th guy next year (would likely be our third guy if he does decently) Thats not very great.. good enough.. but not like a front line type.

Deal would’ve had to have been May, Ruiz or Smith, one of Urias or Strippling and some change. Anything less is an insult. and really probably should be more than that.

so it would basically be one pretty good catching prospect, one pretty good Pitching Prospect., one long Relief guy who can start and some lower levels.

For, an elite closer with 4+ years of really cheap control.. and maybe a lower level guy to fill in some of the void left.

I’m glad NH didn’t budge, Vazquez and his contract is worth a lot more than a couple non-elite prospects.

Without a salary cap, the Pirates will never win another World Series again. So, it’s just a matter of how they come up short each year. They can come up short with Vazquez just as easily they can come up short with a subpar package of prospects.

The Dodgers, on the other hand, actually want to win another one, right?

I have missed exactly zero of the many prospects (and in hockey, draft picks) the Penguins traded over the past few years because they have two banners to show for it.

Time will prove that Ruiz could have been the Pirates starting catcher for at least five or six years, as I still believe he will be for the Dodgers, even as well as Smith is doing at this moment. Gonsolin, if he was offered, is a solid starter. If the Dodgers offered another starting pitcher not named Dustin May, there are at least two or three more starters who can’t crack the Dodgers but would have been great with a team with holes in their rotation.

Is it better to eat steak two nights, or have a full refrigerator for a week?.

Despite the weaknesses in the Dodgers bullpen, it is not a flaming disaster. it can surely be better, and I wish the trade could have been made. However, it’s just not impossible for the Dodgers to be able to still win the World Series this year. Tougher, yes, but not impossible.

But that’s not really relevant. All that means is that, if you won, it was a good strategy. But what if you didn’t win?

What if you traded away Tatis for Shields, and never even reached the playoffs? Or traded Philips, Lee & Sizemore for Colon and missed the playoffs?

The LAD could lose with or without Vazquez. I’d hate to have traded away the future without winning now.

They haven’t won the past two years and I endorse every single move they have made since in the attempt to win, even though many didn’t work out. And I will endorse the ones they make this year to try to win again.

          Why?

Because when you have the chance to win, you try to win.

I literally saw a guy say he’d rather keep Verdugo than win a WS (not a theoretical trade that may or not work out, he’d take the prospect over the flag in hand). If that makes you happier, then you’ve already won.

He didn’t have to trade him he is under contract for many more years and he is only 28 and still improving ever year why trade him just to trade him that would be crazy he will get u a ton in the off season or next year’s deadline probably from dodgers after they don’t win world series again this year

Think the CRANKEE FANS aren’t going to go after CASHMAN?

As a RS fan, I am kind of happy they didn’t land someone like Greinke, though he might’ve rejected it anyway. My hope is that they do not win while Judge and Sanchez are cheap. They’ve got good young talent, but those two are going to get expensive quickly.

what? you think the Yanks can’t afford to keep them? really? btw, we’ll have CC, Gardner, Tanaka, Ellsburu and perhaps Chapman off the books in the next two years. that’s about $75 mil right there.

Of course they can afford them. But the point is, if you have to pay $20M for those two guys, that’s $20M less they have to pay for other players.

Biggest loser is Pittsburgh. Dealing Dickerson for slot money they won’t use, failed to deal Vazquez and couldn’t even move Liriano or Cabrera. Hopefully they find homes via waiver trade

Biggest loser is LA and New York.

Pittsburgh will try to sign Cabrera for 1 more year, and we want Vazquez.

This was a good deadline for Pittsburgh if you ask me.

Lol, if you’re going to judge it that way, biggest losers of the deadline are Baltimore and Miami

they generally use their slot money and they got a PtBNL. not a bad trade for someone who spent so much time on the DL this season.

and there is not waiver trade deadline any more…. try to keep up. (/s) 🙂

The Mets were right to not sell…what would have been the point of getting Stroman? Their rotation is arguably top 3 in all of baseball. Might as well go for it. Now in the event Wheeler doesnt resign..now they have Stroman for 2020.
I wont be against a trade to replenish the farm system..but they would have to make a killing in order for me to feel good about a Syndergaard trade…
    Maybe ….

Overvalue your players much? There are ways to quantify the value of a player and that package is in Trout-land. Would you take Trout? Or Acuna?

I’d rather have Renfro,Paddack..Gore.and Urias than Trout. It’s not even close. Renfroe & Paddack combine for 5.3 WAR for $1M, while Trout has ‘only’ a 6.8 WAR for $35M.

Nothing personal, but Dematteo’s suggestion is insane. I might trade Renfroe straight up for Syndergaard, but would not trade Paddack straight up. Paddack might already be better.

Pirates will regret keeping Vazquez. This team has massive holes that need filled, not even close to competing like the snake oil salesman NH, aka nuttings mouthpiece, wants you to believe. Vazquez is way more valuable in October than he is in a regular season. He just went from 4 October’s of control to 3. The 2 reasons they kept him are because of the lopsided archer trade (which ironically helped put them in this position) and it would be an admission of them being far from competing, which they don’t want to admit to rebuilding. They convinced themselves it was a package including Lux or nothing.

And if NH traded Vazquez for Ruiz and an A ball pitcher, you’d say ___________?
