Cubs To Sign Alex Wilson

By Jeff Todd | August 5, 2019 at 6:02pm CDT

The Cubs have inked a minor-league contract with righty Alex Wilson, according to Robert Murray of The Athletic (Twitter links). Wilson was released recently by the division-rival Brewers.

Wilson, 32, was drubbed at the MLB level to open the season, landing at Triple-A after he was outrighted from the Milwaukee 40-man roster. He wasn’t asked back to the majors by the Brew Crew despite several instances in which the club needed relief pitching.

Even with his awful numbers early in 2019, Wilson is a career 3.44 ERA pitcher in the majors. And he sports a shiny 2.13 ERA over 29 outings and 38 innings at Triple-A since his demotion. Unfortunately, his peripherals were never all that enticing in the majors and haven’t been there this year at San Antonio, where he has allowed eight long balls and carries a solid but unspectacular 31:7 K/BB ratio.

Quit trolling. I would say there is about a 5% chance this guy even makes it to the majors with the Cubs, and 0 % chance he would be on their playoff roster.

wouldnt say that. Chicago’s top handfull of guys are pretty good, but the last few are taxi squad guys. If Wilson looks like his 2018 self by the start of the postseason he could recieve consideration.

He was originally signed by the Red Sox, so the Cubs brass knows more about him than most. I always rooted for him because he went to high school in WV and I’m from WV.

Yes, Theo has created a true dynasty on the North Side of Chicago.

Friendly reminder – Kenny Williams has brought as many rings to Chicago as Theo has. If you aren’t first, you’re last.

What ring????? I remember 2 broadcasts on ESPN that showed all championships in Chicago since 1985 and neither one of them showed a championship by the other baseball team in Cubstown. I think ESPN is a pretty reputable source. Lol. The fact that no one cares about your “team” or even recognizes their existence (if they even really exist) is what really bothers you isn’t it ChiSux? It’s ok you can admit it. Don’t forget the first step to recovery is admitting it.

I have been following the best and most followed team in baseball history for the last 48 years. So says the largest human gathering in the history of our country when the cubs won. The fact that kills sux fans is that nobody cares about that team. So says that fact that they have played in front of 700 fans in their home ballpark. Don’t blame the most watched sports network in our country for broadcasting facts. Nobody cares! Google search dying fan bases and tell me what you find.

Wilson was a really solid reliever until this season and can’t forget he didn’t sign until late ST, so take all that into consideration and that could be a part of it. He was one of detroit’s best middle guys for several years. Not surprise me at all for him to return to normal next year he sign early and get a normal ST.

With Red Sox, Theo drafted Wilson then traded him to Detroit where he was above avg. RP.
Not sure what happened in Mil. but this is definitely a good depth move.

Unlike what the writer of the rumor above who is obviously a Sabermetrics nerd has commented, Alex Wilson is a very solid relief pitcher with six years in the majors. Just like most pitchers in the league this year with the juiced balls, Wilson had to make some adjustments which he worked out in the minor leagues. His getting clubbed in Milwaukee was mainly one bad game (6 runs). Pitchers like Wilson get criticized by the Sabermetrics crowd because he is not a strike out pitcher (career 6K/9). In any case, you don’t last that long in the majors if you stink!

Wilson will do great out of our bullpen. Strikesout a lot of people can bring him in to face righties only.
