Injury Notes: Cueto, Stanton, Hill, Morrow

By Mark Polishuk | August 15, 2019 at 9:13pm CDT

Johnny Cueto’s rehab outing with Single-A San Jose is set for tonight, manager Bruce Bochy told reporters (including NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic and Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group), with the veteran righty slated to make 45 pitches.  Cueto is expected to make one more start beyond tonight for San Jose, though the original plan of two further rehab outings at Triple-A would be altered, as Cueto might simply get called back to the majors if he is healthy and throwing well.  By having “Cueto get up to speed in big league games,” as Pavlovic puts it, the Giants would get some needed rotation help, even if Cueto is limited to only four or five innings per start.  All will depend on how Cueto is feeling as he reaches the final stages of his Tommy John rehab, of course, though getting Cueto back in anything close to his old form would certainly help a San Francisco club that is struggling to stay in wild card contention.

Here’s more on some other injury situations from around baseball….

  • Yankees manager Aaron Boone and GM Brian Cashman both believe Giancarlo Stanton will be ready to return sometime in September, and the slugger himself told reporters (including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch) that he hopes to get “a few weeks of at-bats before October.”  Those at-bats could come in the form of simulated games or minor league games, however, as Stanton has yet to be cleared for on-field activity.  A variety of injuries have limited Stanton to just nine games, making it a “brutal” season that has only been salvaged by the Yankees’ success.  “That’s what’s kept it not so bad for me, is to watch everyone bring together wins all different ways….That’s what I’ve been focusing on, not ’poor me’ or all that stuff,” Stanton said.
  • Rich Hill and Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman haven’t closed the door on the possibility of Hill starting for the team in the postseason, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times writes, assuming Hill’s rehab from a flexor tendon strain proceeds as expected.  Hill played a 50-toss game of catch from 120 feet today, and the next steps in his rehab include throwing off a mound next week and then tossing four bullpen sessions.  From there, Hill “will make what amounts to rehab appearances in the majors. He would start with an inning or two, and increase the workload with each outing, one inning at a time, like in spring training.”  This plan could get Hill ready to go for October, though if length is still an issue, the Dodgers could also use one of several other arms in combination with Hill in a piggyback situation.
  • Brandon Morrow threw a live batting practice session in Arizona yesterday, Cubs GM Jed Hoyer told 670 The Score radio (hat tip to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune).  It remains to be seen if Morrow will pitch at all in 2019, though he projected a possible return in early September in his most recent update, as he had been facing hitters and wasn’t feeling any soreness in his forearm or elbow.

Divide Stanton’s salary this year by 9. What does that come to per game???

Yankees getting hammered by the Indians. Mike Ford can’t hit and he can’t pitch either.

I bet going forward Cabrera gets more MLB hits than Stanton.
Stanton’s contract will go down as the worst in pro sports history.
Watch him before games and you’ll understand why he won’t ever stay healthy.
While Gardy and the pros are warming up and stretching, Stanton is smoking and joking. The dude only cares about strength and doesn’t care for range of motion. He’ll probably have an aggregate 200 games left on that contract before going the way of Elsbury.

Giants dodged a bullet by him not wanting to play in S.F. One player doesn’t make a team. It’s all 25 that make a team.

Correct about dodging a bullet on Stanton. Good thing for the Giants and Cardinals that he didn’t want to play for them!!!

Speaking of injuries, Swanson is apparently taking swings. The Braves might actually get their first hit from their 5-8 since his injury when he comes back.

Morrow probably is more effective left handed, than Pedro Strop is RH. But Maddon has no clue.

The lowly Cubbies need to do something!

Gave up 6 runs in 9th to be swept by Philly?!

Even the White Sox beat Philly 2/3 at Philly a week or so ago.

I predicted this miserable road trip but you fools disagreed.

Wouldn’t it be funnier if the cubs were not in first place still? Albeit barely holding on, get a life dude you’re literally the worst commentor here. Just pt attention to our team and division. We have arguably the best contested Division in baseball. 2 great teams fighting it out for first

I think if Cueto can get thru 4-5 innings in a Final rehab start. Might be good to have him do it at the Big League Level. Get at least 6 Major League Starts from him down the stretch. . .

    – D Rod was good tonight. I had a feeling he might turn it up being back… He did great.

Bum. Smadj. Cueto. D Rod. Webb… September. Go Get Em. !!!

If Cueto is going 4-5 innings in the minors that doesn’t translate into going 4-5 innings in the majors. In the majors anything 92 gets crushed. In the minors he could get away with mistakes. Anyone remembers Bumgarner’s minors rehab start in 2018? He K like 12/15 batters faced. Giants fans were screaming to bring up Bum and they did and he struggled. Pushing Cueto is dumb, but this is the organization that didn’t sell Will Smith. It’s the same organization that gave Belt a ridiculous contract. Same organization that won’t admit their mistakes. Same organizations who refuses to cut the players who have struggled for years.

        Cut the Players huh.

Sounds like a bone to pick… You really picked up steam there towards the end. But if the GIANTS are you team. ? That sucks to not be able to root for them at all.

But I’ll speak on what you said –

Cueto coming too soon I agree. I thought about it. But getting Nothing from the rookies at this point. Basically a toss up. Knowing you’re only 3 1/2 back. Why would you not want to try and go for a wild card game at this point ? Your right they didn’t sell Will Smith or Bum. Might as well try to win out. And make it. They were a rock and a hard place. But I’d rather try to Win in life than sell everything and think that’s the way towards Success… Just because a few others have done it and got lucky. Rings are once in a lifetime. Or with the GIANTS 3 in recent lifetime. And the organization seems to want more. Hiring the best guy on the market at the time. And he turned them into a 3 1/2 back team. Who has a chance to resign two 30 year old pitchers. Closer and Front Starter in the off-season And continuing building even further… Those two things just don’t grow on trees. Anderson is the next Bum. ? HA.!!

So to get back to Cueto. I think the way it looks now, An August 30th start at home vs. San Diego might be an ok comprise, Than starting wherever Sacramento might be… Go 3, 4, or 5. Piggy back maybe Anderson or Menez or even Abad. They called him up today… Many Many Options. But he got thru the lineup once tonight.. I think twice might be a stretch at that point. But a few K’s and innings in one, If the best pitcher’s parks in the Majors… When we need him. I’d rather see.. Take it slowly up here. Then early September. . .

It’s One start. Not gonna kill him. His starting down there anyway. And it might be moot if they fall further back. Anything can happen. That’s why front office teams talk about this stuff… It’s There Jobs to Plan.

        Good Chat.

Morrow has not pitched in an MLB game since July 2018. Having any hope of of Morrow pitching by September this season is a long shot. It’s like an individual planning on winning the Illinois Lottery to get out of debt to save their mortgage. The odds are not favorable.

That could happen but not because you say so. Hill hasn’t had a problem going deep into games when he’s actually pitching. The question now is whether he can be built back up to the required number of pitches by the end of the season. Roberts in effect said no last week. This week Friedman says maybe he can. So time will tell.

Last night Yankee fnally got a taste on what’s going to happen in the post season.

Brett Gardner will strike out a dozen times and then the Yankees will resign him in 2020.

The Starting Pitching is gonna get their holes blown out. Then another mistake will happen CC in 2020.

Nothing has changed since last year they are still running out the old. You expecting different results.

Great job on beating the O’s then get torned up playing CLE>

CC has already said he is retiring after this year. If Gardy comes back it will be as a 4th OF if they trade Frazier in the offseason. I would be fine with them bringing him back as a bench option. He has been the veteran leader for a couple of years and they really don’t have anybody ready to step into that roll. As of now I am pretty sure Frazier and Tauchman have the lead for LF and the 4th OF spot next year.
