Rhys Hoskins Undergoes X-Ray On Hand

By Connor Byrne | August 15, 2019 at 10:20pm CDT

The Phillies staged one of the most memorable comebacks of the season Thursday, rallying from a 5-1 ninth-inning deficit against the Cubs to pull off a 7-5 victory. The game ended on a walk-off grand slam from outfielder Bryce Harper, with first baseman Rhys Hoskins among the players he knocked in. Hoskins got on base after taking a Pedro Strop pitch off the right hand, and it’s possible he suffered an injury in the process. The slugger underwent an X-ray on his hand afterward, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia was among those to report. Hoskins is optimistic he’ll be OK, but there’s no official word on his status yet.

Although Thursday was a resounding success for the Phillies, losing Hoskins would dampen enthusiasm in regards to their outlook. The club’s Harper-led triumph Thursday completed a three-game sweep of Chicago and raised Philadelphia’s record to 63-55. The Phillies are now just a game back of the Cubs for the National League’s second wild-card spot. Although Hoskins has been cold in August, the 26-year-old has still been one of the driving forces behind the Phillies’ solid record. Hoskins has batted .241/.381/.485 (125 wRC+) with 24 home runs and 2.4 fWAR across 532 plate appearances.

Along with posting quality production, Hoskins has been among the Phillies’ most durable players. To this point in the season, only two of the team’s other players – catcher J.T. Realmuto and third baseman Maikel Franco – have started games at first, and they’ve each done so just once. It’s unclear which Phillie would receive the bulk of the work at first in the event of a Hoskins injured list stint, but just-promoted veteran Logan Morrison seems like a strong bet.

The Phillies still rely on x-rays? Why not just consult tea leaves?
CT scans and MRIs? Anyone? Rhys, why don’t you come to the Yankees or Dodgers where they deploy modern medicine for your career?

I never really thought about that. That’s a fair point you’re raising

        trendysayings……
Not really, like most modern clubhouses CBP has an X-Ray machine on site. That is the first “go to” for a possible broken bone. MRI’s and CT’s are done at the hospital if follow up is needed.

They rubbed some dirt on it earlier…
      We’ll see if that helps.

Ejemp2006…………. Fail all clubs rely on X-Rays

“The Yankees were relieved to hear that Gio Urshela’s trip to the X-ray machine revealed only a left knee contusion, though the injury could mean that Miguel Andújar is pressed into regular duty at third base sooner than anticipated.”
      mlb.com/yankees/news/x-rays-negative-on-gio-urshel…

“After the game, Roberts said X-rays on Hernandez’s hand were negative and he will be reevaluated Thursday before the club decides whether to place him on the injured list.”

X-rays are still commonly used. You may do well know that a CT is basically cross-sectional X-Ray.
MRI is a diagnostic exam that wouldn’t be done initially, but more as a step if X-day didn’t indicate what looks to be wrong.

Obviously don’t wanna see Rhys get hurt, but if his hand is just sore, maybe it might not be a bad idea to give him a day or two off just to clear his head. He’s something like 15 for his last 100+ at bats. Took another O-for last night. Gotta hope Chollie can get in his head. We ain’t going anywhere unless Hoskins starts to hit again.

I agree with you on Rhys. He does need a couple of days to clear his head. Since we’ve got Logan Morrison on the major league roster, put him at first for a couple of days.

Lou, remember what happened last time Rhys missed some time? If he misses time and gets hot again, that’s exactly what this team needs.

Besides, now that they have LoMo, if Hoskins is day to day, they can plug LoMo in for a few days. His bat should play well at CBP and there certainly are worse options.

On Power Alley on Sirius XM this morning, Mike Ferrin said Jim Bowden found it in the elevator at Citi Field early this morning.

I still have yet to see what the distance on it was.

It really wasn’t that far, just so dang high….exit velo – 113mph dist – 413 ft. Was pretty much hit down the 330ft foul line. I was never a fan of the Bryce signing but that was a thing of beauty.

It almost hit the facing of the 3rd deck. At 413ft, that’s out of every single MLB ballpark no matter how high it was hit. You don’t need ANALytics to tell you that.

Analytics and Joe Maddon is what cost the Cubs that game.

I wasn’t dismissing it and I am not a huge ANALytics buff, no need to get smart. I was simply saying that it wasn’t one of his 450 ft+ blasts like the one over the camera well earlier this year. It appeared longer because of how high and where it was hit.
You stated you didn’t know the distance, I tried to help, now you try to be civil.
          Have a nice day.

cubs are officially terrible after getting swept by a fourth place team. And yet, yhey are STILL tied for first place in the nl central. They’re set up nicely to be slaughtered by the Dodgers in the playoffs.

I take that back. Just looked at the standings and realized there is no possible way the cubs make the playoffs. NL East will have three teams, Cardinals represent the Central, and LA.

        Who is “us”?

The AL Central has two of the best teams in baseball, and three teams that are tanking. Context is everything.

From top to bottom, the NL West and NL Central are neck and neck for the worst. I have to give it to the Central though.
