Pirates Select Steven Baron

By Jeff Todd | September 3, 2019 at 2:46pm CDT

The Pirates have selected the contract of catcher Steven Baron, per a club announcement. Also heading onto the active roster are outfielder Jason Martin, righty Yacksel Rios, and infielder Cole Tucker.

While the Bucs have plans to pursue upgrades at the catching position in the long run, the club needs to stay afloat at the position for the meantime. The Pittsburgh organization recently bid adieu to veteran Francisco Cervelli, leaving a timeshare situation with Elias Diaz and Jacob Stallings.

Baron, 28, has twice previous received brief MLB stints but has managed only one hit in 16 plate appearances. He was hitting a paltry .180/.264/.248 in 149 trips to the dish this year at Triple-A. Baron is a former first-round pick of the Mariners.

They better call up more players. I e been a pirate fan since 1965. Hurdle is the worst manager in baseball. He’s a joke. He can’t handle a pitching staff. Sesrage has to go also Huntington. But we know this isnt going to happen. Nutting isnt going to pay hurdle and Huntington for networking. Let the pitcher use their best pitches instead of trying to change them. This is the mindset of hurdle and Huntington to pitch to contact. Problem is they give up homeruns. Hurdle had one good year in Colorado and three here. PATHETIC

you’re partially right about Huntington – he needs to update the organizational pitching philosophy – it was cutting edge but now he needs something NEW/ EXCITING and that will work for the next wave of pitchers and if this happens give uncle ray a chance to adapt / or better yet develop it and teach it or find new pitching coach…..hates to say it I’m a fan of Huntington’s

There definitely have to be some major changes, but I do not believe that NH needs to go at this point.
I do think that Hurdle needs to go as he is not a good manager anymore and does really stupid things that are obvious to even the casual observer. The Pirates fundamentals are no better than a pony league team. They blew another game today that they easily should have won.
I am on the fence about Uncle Ray,but they should keep the hitting coaches. All others, including Hurdle, really do need to be fired.

How can you have call ups when most of the AAA group is already here and have been here off and on all year.

Hayes isn’t ready, Craig isn’t good enough, and Kramer is best suited for “Seinfeld.”

I do not understand why Kramer was not recalled. They need to find out about him as their middle infield is crowded.
Durapau also should be recalled.I know that he pitched horribly. But every time they called him up they pitched him that day after he got off the plane to the majors. Then they sent him back down the next day.Give him a three week chance to see if he has any ML talent. He pitched well his first three games.
NH has to get real and get a much better AAA catcher than Steven Baron.

Newman not in lineup again Gonzalez at ss. This is why hurdle has to go. He plays the veterans over rookies.

Hurdle thinks that Newman had too many hits in Colorado and does not have any left.
Bad enough to bench him the last game there but two games in a row?
The only rationale that I see is that he wants to find out whether to keep Gonzalez or Reyes next year.
Clint’s problem is he thinks too much.

As per the TV duo……Newman has been fighting some minor hip pain. Hence his lack of playing since Colorado. If it is in fact minor…we may be able to say ‘Hellooooo Newman’ as early as tonight.

I saw that.It is a shame because he was so hot.I guess that is why they have backups.Frazier has continued the hot streak on his own though.Too bad he cannot consistently hit like that.
I owe an apology to Clint.

If these games were meaningful….maybe he’d be in there. I hope that Tucker would get the SS ABs over Gonzales while Newman is out.

And can someone please enlighten me as to why Hurdle is still using Crick at *ALL* ?

If you noticed Crick did not pitch they day before as he would have normally done.
I think that even Clint is smart enough to know now that Crick has an era over 5 the last half of the year.
Clint does not believe in using his good relief pitchers two days in a row.He treats them as China dolls. That is one of the reasons that he needs to go.
He did not use Kela in the tenth inning of the first game.He was saving him for yesterday.
They would have sent Crick down I think this year but they would have had to bring Dovydas up in his place. It also saves an option for Crick for next year.
Crick was the next man standing yesterday and that is why he used him.I do not think that he will pitch much more if Rios shows well like he did yesterday.
They need to find out about Gonzalez more than Tucker at this point as I do not think that they will want to carry him next year if he does not hit better.Tucker still has minor league seasoning yet as he has not hit well in AAA.
