Angels To Hire Mickey Callaway As Pitching Coach

By George Miller | October 26, 2019 at 9:35pm CDT

9:30 pm: Though the club is still yet to announce the deal, Joel Sherman of the New York Post characterizes Callaway’s hiring as “official” (link). Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com also confirms the hire (link).

2:22 pm: The Angels have hired former Mets manager Mickey Callaway to be the new pitching coach, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network. He’ll join newly-minted manager Joe Maddon’s staff in Los Angeles. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale first mentioned that the two sides were close to an agreement. Per Nightengale, Callaway is stilled owed $1.05MM for the 2020 season by the Mets, who terminated his contract early.

Fired by the Mets just more than three weeks ago, It didn’t take long for Callaway to attract interest as a pitching coach, the role in which he made a name for himself. Though he’s drawn his fair share of criticism for his work leading the Mets over the last two seasons, he earned that position on the back of a half-decade of stellar work with the Indians’ pitching staff, which garnered him a reputation as one of the finest pitching coaches in the game.

Although Callaway and Maddon have never coached on the same staff, Callaway pitched for the Angels in parts of the 2002 and 2003 seasons, when Maddon served as the team’s bench coach. He also coached in the Indians’ dugout during the 2016 World Series, when his Indians were opposed by Maddon’s Cubs.

Between 2013-2017, the five years that Callaway served as the Indians’ pitching coach, no American League team managed a lower overall ERA than the Indians’ 3.65 mark. By all measures, Callaway’s Cleveland teams consistently ranked among the best pitching staffs in baseball. Of course, no small amount of that performance is owed to the superlative talents he had at his disposal: Corey Kluber, Andrew Miller, Carlos Carrasco, and others certainly put Callaway in an enviable position. Still, much of the development of Kluber, Carrasco, Danny Salazar, and Trevor Bauer came with Callaway at the helm; when he took over in 2013, Kluber was virtually anonymous, while Carrasco was a 26-year-old who had posted a 4.93 ERA in just 33 career games.

Wow, good job by the Angels. I was hoping to see Callaway as the new Phillies pitching coach. It would had been great. The ex manager of Mets as new pitching coach of the Phillies. The Phillies will have to look for a new pitching coach because not long ago they fired Chris Young. Yes, I like the Phillies.

          You got it!

The Yankees keep bringing in starting pitching prospects and veterans. At best those guys get a 2 or 3 month run. Then they’re ineffective. Their best starter is Tanaka. He has to be pulled out of the game before he faces the opponents batting order for the 3’rd time.

Now I understand that Rothschild has forgotten more about pitching then I’ll ever know. But the fact is that whether it’s him or the style of pitching the Yankees expect out of their players, it’s just not working.

Good coaches get fired too genius. Sometimes it’s timing and the talent on a staff. It’s not like a pitching coach can take a sub par talent and turn him into Cy Young.

@fighting69th most pitching coaches get fired at some point, that’s baseball it happens.

@tigerfan Many of those players had their best seasons under his watch, not before. Weaver was in the league maybe what 1/2 a season in 06? He was good but he got better 2010-2012. Saunders had his two best seasons, etc. You can discredit Butcher however you like but the solid track record is there and it’s not exactly terrible as many fans choose to remember. It’s not like that group were all-stars going into 2007-08 and he just sustained that, some hadn’t been all-stars at that point. So yeah he did make some pitchers better.

@5toolmvp Clumping together all the years doesnt depict the full picture he entered in with a staff the was set up by bud black. The last 3/4 years the stats were much worse than the image you try to cast. Bottom of the league 3 years which led to his firing.

@macstruts—That’s kind of the point. There will be multiple offers of “lots and lots of money”. What then differentiates the teams are management, location, and division. Angels answered #1 with hiring of Maddon, and #2 has always been. Cole knows AL West well, and meh have a feeling that the Angels can make a move in that division.

It would be interesting if they get Cole and MadBum. That would mean a top of the rotation of
      1. Cole
      2. Bumgarner
      3. Ohtani
Which is very formidable. With some good managing I’d expect them to win at least 85 games.

          1..Cole
          2.Ohtani
          3.Madbum
          4.Heaney

I think we need to stop talking about free agents like we can pick them up in a candy store.

The Angels need to stay healthy and they need one top of the rotation starter. Angel fans can hope they stay healthy, I’ll be talking about that all winter, but without BOTH an ace and health, that second wild card is going to be a tough reach.

Ohtani only pitched 51 innings in 2018 and none in 2019, I really doubt he pitches the number of innings you’d expect from a SP2. I’d slot him SP4 and hope for 125-150 IP.

Well, we disagree. What the Angels need is an ace, and Heaney, Ohtani and Canning to stay healthy.

Who are these top line pitchers on the As? Who are these top line pitchers on Texas? And would you have called them top line pitchers at the start of 2019?

Darkside. Completely agree. Why would they be healthy now? I have no issue with anyone who says they wont be. I don’t think they will be.

But lets say the Angels do get an ace and 100 starts from the ace and those three. I think they’ll be competitive for a wild card.

That means between the four, they miss 28 starts. Likely? Probably not. That’s why I always talk about health with this team. Even if they get 75 from their top three I’ll be happy.

But you need to shoot higher than squeaking in with a Wild Card. You need to shoot for the WS. The Wild Card is only what you settle for when you fall short. You aim for the Wild Card and you’re likely to settle for 80 wins.

would Girardi hire Farrell? id hope its more likely to stick it to both Yankees *and* Red Sox fans simultaneously. (not that i hate either, i just think he may want that as a former Red Sox rival, but also a guy let leave by the Yankees)

How can anybody predict how many wins this team or any team will have next year? IF is a very big word especially this time of year.

“IF” For a lot of teams “IF” the appropriate words. For a lot of teams “no chance is the appropriate words.

In my mind, the Angels are an “IF” team.

Surprised that Joe Madden didn’t hire Kevin Hickey.

I like the hire. Hopefully he can help Canning blossom and squeeze some talent out of the not so heralded youngsters like Sandoval, Barria, and Suárez.

There’s not a ton in the pipeline but getting good production out of 1-2 of them would be huge.

I’m thinking use those guys as durable relievers if they go out and get the starting pitching they need.

I love this move. I’d love to get Dino Ebel as pitching coach and maybe actually even enjoy a season.

You love Callaway being hired as pitching coach but want Ebel to be hired as pitching coach?

Increasing their odds of signing Cole.
    1. Increasing payroll.
    2. Hire Joe Maddon.
    3. Hire Mickey Callaway.
    4. Be on the West Coast.

They aren´t signing Cole. The Astros won´t get him back either because he wants to move on anyways. It´ll most likely be NYY or KC to get Cole. The Angels might Strasburg there is a chance for that but not Cole.

His track record as Cleveland Pitching Coach is rock solid. Hopefully we see the same success with him working with Heaney, Ohtani, Canning as he had with Kluber, Bauer, Carasco etc.

If this says anything at all, is that the Angel’s are serious about winning in 2020 and beyond. I like this move.

Tell Shohei he’ll lose a few games by getting pulled too early if Mickey has a say., And tell him he better be driving in his own runs a la DeGrom if he wants to come out on the winning side of the ledger. At least Mike Trout is there, and I know he can bail a pitcher out. MAN, that guy is good.

That is a really good pick for the Angels but there is better options out there though. Callaway still has to work on thing. Everybody does and every team does don´t get me wrong but Callaway still has some stuff to work on this off-season to work with the pitching for LAA.

They should have gotten him in 2010 instead of now. He´s getting old and really is slumping out. Didn´t get his first win until like August or September.
