Angels To Hire John Mallee To Coaching Staff

By Dylan A. Chase | October 26, 2019 at 8:39pm CDT

The Angels are indeed hiring John Mallee to their coaching staff as an assistant hitting coach, according to a tweet from Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register (link). Bruce Levine of WSCR-AM had previously reported that Mallee was in consideration for a position on Joe Maddon’s Los Angeles staff (link).

As Fletcher notes, the club has not announced the departure of any of their hitting coaches from the 2019 season, so the final staff makeup is still to be announced. At the least, they will be adding a very practiced hand in Mallee.

Mallee spent the majority of the last two seasons working under Gabe Kapler in Philadelphia before an offensive downturn saw him replaced in favor of Charlie Manuel. Before that, Mallee was Maddon’s hitting coach for the Cubs from 2014 through 2017, also serving as the chief hitting instructor on Bo Porter’s Houston staff in 2013 and 2014. The 50-year-old Mallee, a native of Chicago, enjoyed a brief minor league playing career in the early 1990s.

Jeremy Reed, Shawn Wooten, and Paul Sorrento worked as hitting instructors on the Angels staff of Brad Ausmus in 2019.

Maddon wasn’t the Cubs’ manager in 2014.

The only coach Maddon added to his staff when he was hired was Martinez.

So what. Being hired in the fall of 2014 after the 2014 season does not make Maddon part of the Cubs in 2014.

Maddon and Mallee first worked together on the Cubs starting with the 2015 season

Mallee was hired in Oct 2014. This is when he became the Cubs Hitting Coach. Maddon was hired in Nov of 2014, this is when he became the Cubs manager. Nowhere in the article does it imply Maddon or Mallee were with the Cubs for the 2104 SEASON..

You’re such a little man. You don’t know what he implied but we know what you inferred.

You don’t know if someone is a bandwagon fan or not? Do you feel better about yourself calling him a bandwagon fan? It’s good to like yourself, especially when no one else likes you.

They started working together in 2014. Do you seriously believe they waited until the following year to work with each other?

Maddon was hired in 2019 and has already had a huge impact on the team in 2019. And will continue to have a big impact on the team for the next nine weeks and beyond.

So being a huge Angel fan, I’m going to say Maddon started working for the Angels in 2019. His tenure didn’t start in 2020. I’ve been a huge fan since the 60s, so I guess that makes me a bandwagon fan.

When Maddon, Malle or Callaway are interviewed, I’m sure they are not going to be referred as “CURRENT” coaches/manger, not future coaches and mangers. And I’m sure they are working with other even now.

It’s amazing that people don’t realize that coaches make an impact during the off-season.

Maddon is not making any impact for the Angels.

Maddon was hired after the 2014 season was over. He was hired starting with the 2015 season.

Maddon managed the Rays during the entire 2014 season.

So you are saying Maddon is not working for the Angels today? That his presence is meaningless?

We know that’s not true because he already had a hand in hiring two new coaches.

I wonder if the guy who Mallee is replacing already knows he on his way out or if he just read this article and is waiting for the phone to ring…any…minute…now…

Who says he’s replacing anyone? I’m pretty sure Moreno can afford four hitting coaches.

And White was replaced by Callaway, which has nothing to do with Mallee being hired

It’ll be interesting to see if Jeremy Reed is kept. He seemed to have a strong rapport especially with Trout. The guys seemed to really like Sorrento as well. Wooten has ties to Madden from 2002 champs.
