CC Sabathia Hopes To Return For ALCS

By Connor Byrne | October 8, 2019 at 1:29am CDT

The Yankees sent the Twins to yet another postseason exit Monday, earning a 5-1 victory to complete a three-game sweep in the American League Division Series. New York will face either Houston or Tampa Bay in the ALCS, and it’s possible the Yankees will welcome back injured left-hander CC Sabathia in time for the matchup.

Sabathia, whom the Yankees left off their ALDS roster because of nagging shoulder woes, told Brendan Kuty of NJ.com and other reporters he’s hoping to return for the next round.

“I feel pretty good. It’s just up to them. So, we’ll wait and see how I bounce back. I’ll throw the bullpen and, like I said, go from there,” said Sabathia, who will throw a bullpen session Wednesday.

While Sabathia’s a potential Hall of Fame starter who spent almost all of 2019 in the Yankees’ rotation, he’d been lining up to finish his year (and his career) as a reliever. Sabathia made it known entering the season that it would be his last, though it’s been an injury-plagued struggle for the franchise icon. He just might have a chance to contribute to a possible World Series run on his way out, however.

One of Sabathia’s teammates and fellow lefties, reliever Zack Britton, suffered his own injury scare Monday. Britton entered the game in the bottom of the seventh to preserve a 3-0 lead, but he departed in the eighth with a right ankle problem after throwing 1 1/3 innings of one-run ball. (that run came by way of an Eddie Rosario solo shot) Fortunately for Britton and the Yankees, it appears they averted disaster. General manager Brian Cashman said afterward that Britton will be fine for the ALCS (via James Wagner of the New York Times).

CC has overstayed his time. And no, IMO no HOF pitcher he is. He’s very good, really good in his prime, but he’s turned into a cry baby, but he still can pitch.

After Harold Baines was elected, the bar was lowered for the really good players to get in. By those standards, he’ll be in eventually.

You are going to make Poosha really mad. He’s going to start crying any minute because he didn’t get his way.

Glad to laugh in his face when CC’s election is announced in around 8-9 years.

          If Moyer had just won
          6 more games per
          year for 6 years
          earlier in his career
          then he would
          have passed 300
          wins. Scary thought!
          Imagine that debate!
          Impressive that he
          won 20 at age 38
          and that he lasted
          so long…..

It’s called a *Stent*. If it stays open he’ll be fine, till another part of an artery closes up. Bernie Sanders has one too! I have 2 coworkers who EACH has 13 Stents, n doing fine.

I’d compare him to my generations version of Mussina. Pitched in powerhouse AL east, 250+ wins. Not to mention he won a act Young and amassed 3000 strikeouts. He’s a lock for HOF

I don’t think I’d go so far as to say he’s a lock. Definite bubble candidate.

CC wasn’t great, just pretty good. His numbers aren’t a reflection of dominance, they come from being around a really really long time.

I looked him up. If you average his results, and not his 162 game averages because he didn’t play full seasons every year, he comes back with the following line:

      13.2W-8.5L, 3.74 era. 188.2ip. 162.8k, 1.259 whip, 7.8k/9

      In the postseason he was:

      10 -7l, 4.31 era.

Worse yet, 6W-2L LDS, 4W-4l LCS, 0-1 WS. The more important, higher stakes, worse results.

Curt Schilling has far superior numbers in just about every category.

I think if CC gets in it will be towards the end of his years on ballot, or more likely, as a result of a committee vote.

Some WS wins or a dominant 2019 postseason would help, but, is unlikely.

Both of you are so stupid that you can’t remember one year ago when CC forfeited an innings bonus by getting thrown out of a game at the end of the year.

The only reason that he even came back this year was to be part of another winner.

During his first free agent season CC was traded to the Brewers and single handily carried the Brewers into the post season. Often pitching on short rest, he risked a lot to win.

So Poosh-it’s time to give up your anger about CC before you are forced to find another posting alias here.

Look, a little bit of money is nice, but the WS ring is worth more than the playoff share…. and honestly it’s barely a drop in the bucket compared to either his yearly salary or his career earnings.

No, it’s his last ride, he knows it. CC has played a part in so many post seasons, he just wants one more go.

And think about it, it’s got to be hard to be around a couple decades know you’re going, and watch television rest of your team still playing

Compiling numbers by overstaying your usefulness is not hall of fame worthy. There’s some guy named Koufax who came nowhere near those numbers and yet was infinitely better than the fat man. Infinitely. He is not better than Koosman, Lolich, Wood, Carlton, Ford, McNally, Spahn, John, et al and those are just the pitchers I saw by the time I was 12 years old. And I didn’t even look anything up or even think about it yet, so that only partly covers the sixties. He’s good but don’t even think about hall of fame. Please.
