NL West Notes: Padres, Cordero, Giants, Fetter, Dodgers

By Dylan A. Chase | November 14, 2019 at 3:02pm CDT

Padres GM AJ Preller spoke to reporters at the GM Meetings in Arizona yesterday, with a few interesting notes on the club’s current roster concerns. While Preller didn’t unequivocally dispel rumors of Luis Urias’ availability on the trade market, he did offer that he sees “a lot of scenarios” in which the youngster is starting in the middle infield in 2020 (as noted in an article from Dennis Lin of The Athletic). Meanwhile, catcher Francisco Mejia is “very much in the catching equation” for the club next year, and team officials still feel like Austin Hedges can “swing the bat a lot better than he did [in 2019]”.

Preller also shared that the club is expected to retain second bagger Greg Garcia and that the club’s catching depth is “an area we get hit on” from other teams. Taken together, these comments don’t provide much clarity with regard to the team’s plans at catcher and second, but could be seen as typical of an executive staring down an offseason that offers a dizzying number of potential routes toward club improvement.

More from the NL West…

  • Another one of Preller’s many touted young players, outfielder Franchy Cordero, tweaked a glute muscle while rehabbing at the team’s complex in Arizona this week. As reported by AJ Cassavell of MLB.com (link), the injury is not expected to be overly serious but should delay the 25-year-old’s participation in the Dominican Winter Leagues. Padres fans know well the extent to which Cordero has been limited in recent years by injuries, as a chronic elbow issue acted in concert with a quad injury to rob him of the majority of his 2019 season. Cordero, a lefty-swinging outfielder capable of playing center, fits exactly the type of player the Padres have been rumored to be in pursuit of this offseason, though he has been limited to just 79 major league games since debuting in 2017.  For what it’s worth, Preller still characterized Cordero as, “One of the more talented and physically gifted players in the league in terms of a speed/power combo.”
  • The Giants are considering University of Michigan coach Chris Fetter for their pitching coach vacancy, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (link). As noted previously, Fetter was a considered as a candidate for the Mets’ pitching coach opening. Fetter, a former ninth-round pick of the Padres back in 2009, previously spent time as a coach in the Dodgers system while new Giants manager Gabe Kapler was serving as the Los Angeles director of player development.
  • Speaking of L.A., Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman reiterated the club’s plans to use Julio Urias in the rotation next season, as noted in a tweet from Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times (link). Friedman currently projects to use Urias, Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, and Kenta Maeda in the rotation, while Ross Stripling will “have a chance” to compete for a spot. The perennial NL West champs have also been connected to a number of high-profile starting pitchers this offseason (Gerrit Cole included), and starter Rich Hill has expressed a strong desire to return to the Dodgers.  The team also has Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May on hand as starting options, with Pedro Moura of The Athletic (link) relaying that the club still views May as a big league starter moving forward despite his late-season 2019 deployment from the bullpen.

The Giants so much want to be the Dodgers. I’m surprised they didn’t hire Tommy Lasorda as their GM.

According to every fan everywhere, their team doesn’t want to be another team but their team is also not good enough. At the same time however, their team is also close or has good pieces and is therefore awesome, which is why they are chosen to be “their” team. When their team doesn’t win, the whole cycle starts over again.

And Dodgers are any better on the winning side of things? 7 years straight with nothing to show for it but a NL Division flag! At least when the Giants are in position to win they do, unlike your Dodgers, BIG man! Smh, Dodgers should be at the bottom of the west based on how they play! Hater! Lol

Actually, your Dodgers have not won the WS 131 times. Took them 83 years to win their first and it’s now been 31 years since their last. Why are you boasting about the Dodgers? If a team is not a WS champ in any given year, they’re LOSERS, no matter where they finish. Doesn’t matter if your team finishes with the 30th worst record, loses in the WS, or finishes anywhere in between—you are LOSERS!!!

From 2017-2018 the Dodgers matched the success of the Padres entire franchise history. But sure go nuts over a time period where baseball was more of a hobby while our country was still being shaped. How will the Bridegrooms ever get over not winning the 1894 standings.

Add that up and you have 113 years in a row of being the world’s losers. Forget your major sport treams argument—we’re talking baseball here. Lemme see you deny this.

I honestly could say that I could understand why the Padres would put L Urias on the trade market. As I see now he’s blocked in San Diego but anyone else who knows otherwise can definitely let me know. I also think that hedges production probably won’t improve by much. There’s a lot of room for improvement, I just don’t see much improvement happening. I’m not against the Padres or anything this is just things that I’m noticing from watching baseball over the years.

The thing that concerns me regarding Austin Hedges is his self view. There were quotes earlier this year where he felt comfortable with his low production because he had such a great glove. No player should rest on that laurel alone. He should be a competitor who wants to improve himself.

I don’t remember who it was but there is some sort of statistic that says after 300 at-bats maybe four hundred, that is what that person is going to be as a hitter. Obviously, injury could affect that but, in general, we have figured out that Austin Hedges will never hit.

Well Hedges Non-production and Stellar D ..led the team to a winning record when Hedges started ..team was 70-92.. so that tells me how valuable his D is.. onnOffense 2019 was a disaster yr for him .. BUT in 2019 he had a .711 OPS ..i know not great but the package D/O that Hedges is with a .711 he is likely #1 or #2 in overall value in the MLB with that combo.. truth be told I think SDP needs more of a Contreras type cause we ain’t LAD and have 7 other great bats innour lineup..maybe we have 4 or 5 after tgis off-season .. why our C can just be a black hole on O.

You want them to start Trammell in CF. The same player who wasn’t good enough to play CF in AA for Chattanooga? The same player who hit .230 in 2 AA leagues this year? Just because he’s “toolsy”? Give him 2 or 3 years and maybe he develops, but based upon his play last year, he’s not there yet.

Yes, I do. Why not—he’s not the one who’s hit something close to .217 in his last few postseasons. And they made that fool the NL MVP a few days ago. Shoot, Trammell can do better than that. They gave you 3 years of 6th grade hoping you’d develop but you’re not there yet. Are you gonna deny Bellinger’s info?

Franchy Cordero is the Padres’ current version of Kyle Blanks. An injury-prone carrot being dangled in front of us. Saving a roster spot for him and possibly losing any other prospect who doesn’t have injury problems would be a travesty. At this point, dump him for some international signing money.

Whether it is a weak body or poor preparation, the dude is a liability.

Seems like Ryu is definitely a goner. He pitched too well this year for the Dodgers to pony up the $$$. You could probably get Hill to sign an incentive-heavy contract but he’s not reliable as he’s never healthy for the full season. May also just let him walk. I’m fine with Urias, Gonsolin and May getting a crack but I think the Dodgers need another top end starter to match the other elite teams in the playoffs. Kershaw is more like a low #3 or a true #4. Urias can jump into a very nice #2 or #3 with Buehler at the top spot. Cannot trust Stripling. He gets hit too hard. Need another top arm to fill that #2/#3 slot.

Last time I ran into 4 of your losers in Petco, they started loudly saying “BOSTON, BOSTON” because I was waering my traveling Angel jersey on. I returned the favor by telling them, “Yeah, versus anyone you girls play in the 1st round.” As they kept it up, I asked whether Chavez Latrine flushed clock-wise or counter? I closed by asking if that was corn in their ears? Your Dodgers deserve everything you not getting.

I want the Padres to be a little more patient. it’s hard, I know but I really see a chance of big improvement at catcher and 2b with Mejia and urias this season. it’s fun to dream on Cordero and even renfroe staying healthy and improving as well. I don’t have an issue with going with Margot in cf one more season either. he’s only 25. I could see growth in our rotation too. if they can truly move Myers’ contract by attaching prospects that’s gotta happen. I’m ok with parting with Abrams and Edwards and any pitching prospects not named gore or patino (not all those guys but 2 or 3 from that list). taking back a bad contract on a pitcher if it helps. one of Colorado relievers especially if you can get jon gray or maybe David price from Boston? if you dont get gray or price in trade then go for Strasburg hard. add a legit setup guy if you can and have faith in these young guys improving. This team will improve if you trust the process. Don’t blow it up

If the Padres owner is so intent on winning then sign Strasburg. Otherwise sit back and wait on the talent to develop. That owner is the guy sabotaging Preller.

idk about the owner preller dynamics but I agree with letting the talent develop. dump Myers so you can go after Strasburg should be goal #1.

NO, no no—Edwards and Abrams are keepers. How can you not see that? Margot has had several years and is only a platoon player. I too like Urias but as a sub. Hasn’t shown in the majors what he did in the minors. Yeah, I like Mejia. Lose that cupcake Hedges.

        Urias is a starter. Easily.

He won’t even be 23 until June. Most players his age haven’t even made it to the majors yet. Let alone stuck as starters.

I can see a situation where Archer is traded to the Pirates for Myers contract. The Padre’s GM said they would be willing to do some 3 for 1 deals on every one not in their Top 5 to fill holes on the roster. This would free up 13 million in roster space for the Padres and provide them w a SP but what would it take for the Pirates to make this trade? Archer should bring back at least 2 prospects then in combination with taking on 45 million of Myers contract. it should net them 3 more lower tiered prospects leaving the Top 5 for Padres other trades.. The Pirates need a catcher Luis Campusano, a 3B option to hold down the spot for Hayes so Ty France would fit, they also need a LHP so Joey Cantillo looks intriguing as well as SS Gabriel Arias and OF Edward Olivares. This trade seems beneficial to both sides, the Padres free up 3 spots from the 40 man roster while adding a SP and reducing 13 million in payroll in 2020 getting out from under Myers contract (68.5 mil over 3 years). The Pirates have the payroll space to take on Myers contract and can get 5 prospects in areas of need to take a chance on and hope that 1 or 2 pan out.

Maybe but Myers plus 5 prospects w/ upside that are all but MLB ready and fill areas of need may entice them to do it. The Pirates need to replenish the farm and are in a position to take on Myers’s contract if the pieces are right. AJ Preller is in win now mode but limited payroll has cuffed his hands so the Padres can use the money saved and get a top FA pitcher. The Pirates can trade Archer and recoup the prospects they lost from trading for him in the first place.

I think a deal could get done where it could work maybe Abrams or Patino could be involved. The Pirates traded away their top 3 prospects for Archer so they may be willing to take on Myers contract to bring in multiple prospects to put the farm back to a pre-Archer trade status. It would be a viable option for Preller to attempt it. This route allows Preller to keep Gore or Trammel so why not try this route and sign one of the top free agents.

Maybe Abrams or Patino could be involved in a combination w/ the others some how. The Pirates could save face by trading Archer and bringing their farm back to pre-Archer trade status in a Myers trade swap so they might do it. Preller can save Gore and Tramell for depth and he can use the money he frees up and get a top free agent pitcher.

Nope. Preller would have to include Gore to get the Pirates to do Myers for Archer. I know you love Myers and all that but no GM in baseball in interested in him at this point.

If his negative value is balanced out w/ multiple top prospects I bet many teams will be asking about Myers. The questions is whether the prospects needed to erase his negative value are worth freeing up the money to get a top FA pitcher.

Anyone, including Preller, who thinks Cordero is a great outfielder has never seen him play. He has no instincts and is atrocious on defense. If you thought Franmil Reyes was a DH, you should look at Franchy! He’s ten times the hitter. Maybe someone should remind Preller that the Padres are in the NL, and defense is important.

Preller took it up the bunt hole when he bought Bryan Mitchell by taking on Chase Headcase’s contract. Mitchell didn’t have the potential of a ton of the prospects and had a bitter few cups of coffee…

Myers + 1 top prospect should happen. Meyers isn’t a complete dog, he played an ok 1st and has streaky hitting. Headley couldn’t track a changeup.
Preller either makes this happen or will likely get fired. Myers is a cancer.

The Padres can include money on the back end of the deal in a Myers swap for Archer and prospects. It’s Archer and freed up pay roll space to pursue a top FA pitcher. Preller then could trade Archer and they have 23 million freed up in 2020 which makes Cole or Strasburg more feasable.

What a disaster suave A. J. Preller has been for the Padres. The only worthwhile (in my opinion) acquisition he has made is F. Tatis Jr. I wouldn’t even rate Manny Machado a success (just look at his 2018 numbers for $30 million…COME ON!) And now the baseball idiot hires Trace Tingler (who cares if I got his name wrong) as the new manager, and we won’t be going after high-priced free agents (basement again!!!). Why doesn’t Ron Fowler open up his eyes and dump the loser!
