Giants Sign Tyler Anderson

By Steve Adams | December 4, 2019 at 1:00pm CDT

DECEMBER 4: Anderson receives a $1.775MM base salary, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). There’s a roster bonus of $500K after 150 days of activity as well as $350K in incentives for throwing at least 130 innings.

DECEMBER 3: The Giants have signed lefty Tyler Anderson to a one-year, Major League contract, the team announced Tuesday evening. Anderson, who was claimed off waivers out of the Rockies organization, had been non-tendered yesterday. Terms of the contract weren’t disclosed, but it’s safe to assume that the GSE Worldwide client will take home less than the $2.625MM he’d been projected to earn in arbitration.

Anderson, 30 later this month, underwent knee surgery over the summer and was limited to 20 2/3 innings with the Rockies in 2019 as a result. The former first-round pick had an impressive debut season with the Rox in 2016 when he pitched 114 1/3 innings of 3.54 ERA ball with 7.8 K/9, 2.2 BB/9 and a hefty 50.9 percent ground-ball rate. But Anderson’s results took a turn for the worse in 2017-18, as his ground-ball rate deteriorated and he became increasingly homer prone. Anderson did rack up 176 innings and make 32 starts for Colorado as recently as 2018, and he has a minor league option remaining, making him a somewhat intriguing depth piece for the Giants in 2020.

Anderson isn’t likely to be guaranteed a job in the rotation next season, but there’s enough uncertainty on the Giants’ starting staff that he should have ample opportunity to vie for a spot this spring. Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija have starting spots locked down, but the remaining spots currently look to be up for grabs in a competition featuring Anderson, Tyler Beede, Conner Menez, Logan Webb, Dereck Rodriguez and Andrew Suarez. That mix would change, of course, if (or perhaps when) the Giants make some additions via free agency or the trade market.

If Anderson is able to return to form, the Giants will be able to control him through the 2021 season via arbitration.

Hey man welcome back. Just don’t give up more than 5 runs per outing and the #3 spot is yours.

He will have to compete with D-Rod who gave up 5 runs in the first inning at the final game. What a show of skills that was! 5 runs per outing (if he makes it past the 1st inning) earns him a spot.

Wolf, per our perplexed posts yesterday, today, this makes some sense. Anderson must have said “I’ll skip going into arbitration if you give me one year at X-price.” If the Giants are lucky, they might have a # 4 or 5 guy locked up.

Is all hope lost that Bum will sign with the giants?

Yes. Farhan’s way. He would rather sign someone just as good rather than resign him and forego the draft pick compensation.

The Giants wouldn’t give up a draft pick if they resigned MadBum.

Someone “just as good” as MadBum? Tyler Anderson? Because some donkey show journalist from McCovey Chronicles said Tyler Anderson is “just as good” as MadBum? Quit freebasing stupidity.

Not a single free agent pitcher can compare to what madbum has done. You can’t replace madbum because he’s irreplaceable.

Huh? Statistically, MadBum hasn’t been very good.

Zaidi may be a “non-tender” in 2020 if he doesn’t get the quality talent to make the Giants winners next season.

So far Zaidi has been good at letting MadBum, Smith and Pillar go. And saying it wasn’t financial but a way to give younger talent opportunities. Dickerson and Duggar haven’t stayed healthy enough to be on the field.

Zaidi has an opportunity at the Winter Meetings to show the fans his plan for making the Giants winners. He said he wanted a power hitting corner outfielder … he better get one that will hit 30-40 homers next season. After all Pillar was tied for the Giants most homers with 21.

Zaidi needs to be the WINNER at the Winter Meetings and not settle for bargain basement talent.

MadBum hasn’t signed anywhere. So, why the pessimism?

Well, Zaidi said about Pillar that it wasn’t financially motivated, but to let younger players have an opportunity. Why wouldn’t he say the exact same thing in this instance and snap up the draft pick?

As of 11/21 Kapler said he hadn’t even SPOKEN to Bumgarner. Not sure what’s happened since then. Keep him or let him go but show him the respect he deserves!

You might be what I’m looking for. I can do some of the melodic vocals myself but a true grindcore vocalist is definitely necessary and I don’t think I am the most gifted in that area of vocal expertise. To be honest, some if the music is gonna have melody but some of it is definitely not. We need the melody in some songs to book shows but we need the chaos to stay death metal. If you are okay with being on an album that has some melody on it but you don’t have to take part in we can see if it’s a fit.

They moderated me out. I was telling everyone about the death metal album I’m making that is going to sweep the nation (and parts of Europe and Asia as well). The entire album is going to be about holding hands (which is why it’s going to sweep the nation along with my incredible sing writing ability). Nsmith12641 said he was down to help me with some chaotic grindcore vocals but I don’t know how to reach him now. Let me know if you find him posting anywhere or anything.

Thought Anderson was in the competition to become the closer? I figured it would be between him and Watson, and I feel Watson is better suited for the eighth.

If he pitches 130 innings he’ll get $2.625M. Which is exactly what MLBTR predicted. Seems fair.
