Dodgers, Angels Have Held In-Person Meetings With Gerrit Cole

By Jeff Todd | December 4, 2019 at 1:04pm CDT

The Dodgers and Angels “have gotten face time” with free agent ace Gerrit Cole, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Those teams have long rated among the top theoretical possibilities for the California native.

Cole has recently been wooed in person by the Yankees, who’d like to roll out the red carpet for him in the Bronx. Sherman provides a detailed explanation of the organization’s approach — including his belief that Cole’s general predilection for the West Coast won’t prevent him from donning pinstripes.

It’s completely unsurprising to hear of the Halos’ involvement. The organization is desperate to get back to winning, has a glaring need for pitching and money to spend, and is now set to embark upon a new potential revenue source after agreeing to a deal with the city of Anaheim.

As for the Dodgers, they were already known to have held sit-downs with two other high-end free agents. Now, they’re at least a legitimate player on Cole, though the true interest level isn’t known. This level of investment is well within the organization’s financial capabilities but hasn’t really been part of its approach of late. The team has been willing to spend gobs of money on short-term arrangements. Whether it’ll approach Cole with such a scenario, providing an alternative to a lengthier term and greater overall guarantee, remains to be seen.

The Dodgers 2018 season proves how ridiculous the ”too soft” narrative is.

How? They crumbled. Figuratively choked again at the highest level while have a historically good team for the 4th consecutive year.

        • Fred

The 2016 and 2018 teams weren’t “historically good”. They lost to better teams those years. And of course, that 2017 World Series has an asterisk on it. They did choke this year, I’ll give you that.

        • amk3510

10 games under .500. 4 gamrs out in September. Had to play game 163. 6 outs from down 2-0 in NLCS. Went to extra innings possibly facing a 3-1 series deficit. Won a game 7 on the road. Yup thats sure a soft team. And since win is 91 wins historically good?

        • airyordan

I’d love the Dodgers to sign Cole…or almost any top tier talent but it won’t happen. 3 more years of the financial plan requiring us to stay under the MLB Payroll tax level. Besides Cole alone won’t ever get us a WS Championship. He’s not a clutch hitter.

The Angels now need to go all in with Cole. With Wheeler off the table, there really isn’t a plan “B”.

If the Angels don’t get Cole, I wouldn’t be satisfied even if they did sign Mad Bum and Ryu.

They need Cole and 2nd SP to fill the void of Skaggs, probably a Madbum/Ryu/Porcello type to go with Heaney/Ohtani/Canning.

Please make this happen and sign Cole. I know he will be a lot of money but I think he would be worth it. Don’t worry about previous contracts. Just learn from them and give your self/team and player options or opt outs. Please again and thank you!

Angles are #3 for the following reasons, the bad team would be 3 or more years before making playoffs. angels 3-5 years behind Dodgers and Yankees on pitchers advance analytics and Cole is big in analytics.

With the Phil’s getting Wheeler, who else can afford Cole? (@ $35M yr). Angels, Dodgers, Yanks. Boston and Cubs are shedding payroll. Giants are rebuilding. Mets are at a standstill. White Sox and Padres maybe, but the Pads have shown a preference for Stras and the WSox have shelled out more $ already than they ever have on a free agent. It looks like its between LA and NY.
