Tigers Sign Shao-Ching Chiang

By Jeff Todd | December 18, 2019 at 10:38am CDT

The Tigers announced that they’ve inked a minor-league deal with righty Shao-Ching Chiang. It comes with an invitation to MLB camp.

Chiang, a 26-year-old hurler, originally signed with the Indians out of his native Taiwan. He steadily moved up the ladder in the Cleveland system but ran into headwinds as he reached the upper tiers in recent campaigns.

Last season, Chiang repeated the Triple-A level without earning a call-up to the bigs. He has recorded 195 2/3 innings of 5.11 ERA ball with 7.7 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 at the highest level of the minors. Chiang became a minor-league free agent at the conclusion of the 2019 season.

You’d expect the noise a cash register makes to be a more expensive signing.

Ching Chiang can’t be much worse than the Ying-yangs the Tigers already have!

He was a fringe prospect when he was in the lower minors, but at this point he’s more along the lines of organizational depth. He’s got good control, but he doesn’t really strike anyone out either.

His S0/9 has improved dramatically to 8.8 in 2019 compared to 5.4 in 2018 (Both AAA numbers)

Ten years of watching Leyland fumble our chances to win a World Series is what brings out the haters. The man would get the deer in the headlights look every time he had to make a game decision. Until that guy stops whispering in AA’s ear, and AA is also shown the door, the Tigers are going nowhere.

Christopher Illitch needs to grow a pair. He’s the man who writes the friggin’ checks! But he’s also the dufus who gave Avila an extension a year before his contract was up and before he has proven he deserves one! This is just like his old man before Dombrowski came on board. Mr. I had Randy Smith who flushed the club down the toilet; he, too, got a contract extension.

Mike Illitch made the Hot Stove season interesting for a while. You never knew what the headlines would read every morning.
I understand we need some depth, but an $80MM payroll stinks.

I don’t buy that “Leland is ruling from behind the curtain” thinking that is popular. Sure, the team looks like they are doing the same thing that they did when he was in charge, but does no one think Ausmus and Gardy had/have minds of their own? And Ausmus was even worse than Gardy.

If it’s true that Leyland has indeed been influencing AA, he should now be whispering in his brother’s ear begging for absolution.

Sounds like the perfect signing for the Tigers. I think they are trying to get the first overall draft pick for the 3rd time in 4 years. The GM is awful.

I believe it’s extremely rare when a GM whose tenure was in the midst of a rebuild receive any praise. To call someone awful on the internet is sad, especially when we don’t know the circumstances. Who knows, Al Avila might save your life. It’s too early to judge the JV trade, let alone this man’s character.

Sure, Detroit’s GM is awful, but when the Cubs and Astros did the same, their GM’s were geniuses.

I hear the Angels are interested in Boyd. Makes sense for Det to deal him to a team that has virtually nothing in their system in return, so brace yourselves for Chiang II.
