Yankees Trade Chance Adams To Royals

By Steve Adams | December 23, 2019 at 1:20pm CDT

1:20pm: The Yankees announced that they’ve acquired minor league shortstop Cristian Perez in exchange for Adams. The 21-year-old had a down season in his first year at Class-A Advanced in 2019, hitting .252/.290/.285 in 424 plate appearances.

Perez has never shown any semblance of power in the minors and doesn’t walk much. However, he’s consistently posted low strikeout rates and hit for a respectable average (career .263/.312/.319). Kiley McDaniel and Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs called him an “instinctive defender with some feel to hit” in their write-up of the Royals’ farm system early in the 2019 season.

1:01pm: The Yankees and Royals have agreed to a deal that will send right-hander Chance Adams from New York to Kansas City, tweets MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. Once rated as one of the organization’s best prospects, Adams was designated for assignment last week in order to open a roster spot for newly signed Gerrit Cole. The two teams have yet to formally announce the deal.

Adams, 25, has struggled to an 8.18 ERA in a small sample of 33 MLB innings but isn’t long removed from being considered one of baseball’s best pitching prospects. In the 2017-18 offseason, each of Baseball America, MLB.com ad Baseball Prospectus ranked Adams within the game’s top 100 overall prospects. At that point, he’d just wrapped up a season that saw him pitch to a 2.45 ERA with 8.1 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 in 150 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A.

Things haven’t gone smoothly for Adams since, as he’s posted a 4.72 ERA in nearly 200 Triple-A innings since that time (in addition to the aforementioned MLB struggles). Adams has seen his walk rate tick upward as his strikeout percentages have dipped considerably from his time in the low minors. However, he won’t turn 26 until next August and has a minor league option remaining, so there’s little harm in a rebuilding club like the Royals taking a speculative look in hopes of striking gold.

          No you shouldn’t.

My take is the Yankees gave up on a pitcher they once considered a top prospect and in return got a traditional Freddie Patek type young SS prospect back for a player they DFAed and had to move. Hoping win-win. While I hate the Yankees I try to always root for the underdog player.

Adams had surgery on his throwing arm after the 2017 season and was simply never the same after. It was visible immediately from the onset of spring training, as his once 95 mph+ velocity had regressed to a sub standard 91-93 range. While there were hopes he could regain his velocity with time, it simply never happened, and his results at all levels never rebounded. He was broken long before he made his major league debut, sadly. He began his professional career in the bullpen, and I’d have to think that is where he’ll have to end it if he wants to find success.

its all of 25 innings in a big hitter’s haven. also has only been given one start, and hasnt spent consistent time in the Majors. none of those factors may, in reality, be acting too hard upon this situation, but they could collectively be having at least some effect.

You guys are acting as if the Royals gave up a top prospect. Perez may never even sniff AAA. Meanwhile, at least Chance can be a fringy AAAA pitcher and eat some innings. And to be honest, the Yanks aren’t the best at getting the most out of their SP prospects. Severino, German and Montgomery hopefully will be the exceptions,

The Yankees make money and send it to the Royals, whose owner, David Glass, was CEO of WalMart and made billions paying employees starvation wages supplemented with the tax dollars of working Americans.

Good news, he finally found a form of socialism he endorses – the kind that gives him tens of millions of dollars in free money every year, forever. I can see why you’d be on-board with that.

I’m sure you can give plenty of examples of that. Clint Frazier was rated high before he came to the Yankees. Urshela and Tauchman weren’t rated at all. Andujar was rated in the 60s somewhere, Severino wasn’t rated that highly in the top 100 but not a can’t miss. Jordan Montgomery wasn’t rated highly at all So tell me about all the Yankee highly rated prospects who flamed out. Adams rating came before bone spurs in his elbow at the time he was rated the 7th best prospect in the Yankees farm system

That’s true and an even bigger example of that is Brandon Wood, who was supposed to be a power hitting third baseman for a very long time, instead he was one of the worst hitters of all time.

Yeah, like Robinson Cano? Go try to find his name on a top 100 list.

I see your Chance Adams and raise you a Todd Van Poppel. See small market teams aren’t immune to over hyped prospects either.

Under the definition of 4A player there’s Chance Adams.

He actually was coveted for a while and never seemed to demonstrate his potential. If a smaller market team can unlock that potential, they just made one of the better pitching trades of this offseason.

German was from the marlins and Severino isn’t an ace I’m sorry. Very solid but they needed cole to have a legit #1

          1. you can develop a guy after you aquired him
          2. Severino would probably be an ace if his healthy could cooperate.

German isn’t really a great example as a pitcher that they’ve developed, everybody can get the backend guys.

Is .263 really a respectable average these days? Especially when it doesn’t come with any home runs or walks? I’d lean no.

He’s a yankee now they’ll spin anything into a positive. If he hit .250 in AA he’ll somehow be a top prospect.

Good move for the Royals, even if he does nothing he might just go to a foreign league and the team will have won the deal in all likelihood.

then Ill tell you hindsight is 20/20 because 10/10 scouts probably think this guy is at best a bench bat in the Majors, and that’s if he even gets there.

The problem with Chance Adams is that he never recovered from injury. The Royals should hire Patch Adams to be the team physician. Maybe he won’t fix him but it would be kind of funny to watch Chance pitch with the rubber ball on his nose.

It’s a Trojan horse from the Evil Empire, as soon as he gets to KC little Yankees are going to explode out of his belly and start impregnating all the women in KC and they’ll put nypd blue on repeat on the big screen at Kaufman stadium. Dayton Moore, you fool!
