Phillies Sign Ronald Torreyes

By Steve Adams | January 7, 2020 at 1:34pm CDT

The Phillies announced Tuesday that they’ve signed infielder Ronald Torreyes to a minor league contract. The Philadelphia organization also formally confirmed its previously reported minor league signing of catcher Christian Bethancourt. Both players will be in Major League camp this spring.

Torreyes, 27, spent the 2019 season in the Twins organization. He appeared in seven big league games late in the season and tallied 17 plate appearances, including a rare walk-off hit by pitch, but he was otherwise relegated to Triple-A work. In 330 plate appearances with the Twins’ affiliate in Rochester, Torreyes hit .256/.289/.406 with 11 homers, 11 doubles, a triple and two steals.

The deal with Philadelphia will bring about a reunion of sorts with incoming skipper Joe Girardi, who knows Torreyes quite well from his time with the Yankees. The versatile Torreyes was an oft-used bench piece for Girardi in 2016-17, tallying 505 plate appearances and a .281/.311/.374 batting line along the way. He doesn’t get on base much or hit for power, but the right-handed-hitting Torreyes is a tough strikeout (career 13.2 percent) who is capable of playing second base, third base and shortstop.

Torreyes will have plenty of competition in Spring Training as he looks to land a spot on Girardi’s roster for the 2020 season. The Phillies have also brought in Josh Harrison, Phil Gosselin and T.J. Rivera on minor league deals this winter.

Is this the guy who was supposed to be a future hall of famer as a Yankees prospect?

Torreyes was never a top prospect and didn’t come up with the Yankees. They were his sixth organization.

He’ll always be known as part of the first trade of the HoyeStein era. Even then, he was viewed as an intriguing, highish upside guy.

The perfect example of an untouchable prospect that could have been moved for proven MLB talent. Now we are seeing the Angels make the same mistake, opting to hoard Adel instead of flipping him for Clevinger. Jeesh!

Nice signing for the Phillies. He’ll provide MLB proven depth at a number of positions. I expect him to get some decent reps in Spring Training, too.

They have a ton of infield depth, with A. Gamboa also on their 40 man roster and outfield depth as well with Nick Williams and Roman Quinn on the 40 man roster. They need to trade from this depth for pitching.

Detroit desperately needs bats. How about Nick Williams and Gamboa for Joe Jimenez and Kyle Funkhouser? Williams would probably bat cleanup in that lineup, protecting Miggy.

Or how about a blockbuster bad contract swap?

    Odubel Herrera
    Nick Williams
    David Robertson
    For
    Jordan Zimmerman
    Joe Jimenez
    Kyle Funkhouser

The remaining cash on Odubel/Robertson’s contract is dead even with the remaining salary of Zimmerman.

Zimmerman may benefit from an move back to the NL and can compete for the 5th starters gig. If he loses he goes to the ‘pen as a spot starter or long reliever. Jimenez would provide the Phils with a stable 7th inning arm and Funkhouser is a mid level SP prospect with a fun name, who kind of makes the trade a little more fair for Philly.

Odubel and Nick the stick would immediately be starters on that club and that market would be a perfect low pressure place for them to start fresh.

    I’ve seen crazier…

I think you’re feelings about Nick Williams are greatly distorted. As bad as the Tigers are he would be lucky to make their roster let alone bat cleanup. The Phillies would jump at this deal as Jimenez is the only good player among the group.

Nick Williams > Joe Jimenez, in my opinion anyway.

The fact that Jimenez has an all-star appearance on his resume is sad for MLB. Look at the stats.

The Tigers OF combined for -1.8fWAR in 2019, worst in MLB.

You might be a little biased. Jimenez by far. Detroit could get several good prospects for him alone. How low has Miggy got it Nick Williams can protect him?

This doesn’t make a ton of sense. The Tigers will lose money, and have to deal with Odubel. No one wants Odubel. Williams has shown flashes of a good hitter, but he’s a liability in the field. Robertson won’t play at all. For the Phillies Jimenez and Funkhouser are nice pieces. The Phillies can just eat the money owned to Zimmerman and release him. The Phillies side of the trade is much better imo.

Odubel would start in CF and Williams would start in RF. Odubel would probably bat lead off and Nick would hit 5th. Look at the Tigers roster. They have NOTHING as far as Outfielders. Odubel and Williams would make their team better and Jordan Zimmerman may be one of the worst contracts in baseball. If the Tigers could move Zimmerman AND improve their woeful OF, I think they would at least consider this trade. I understand nobody wants Odubel but he can play. As a Phillies season ticket holder I can tell you Odubel is an above average hitter and centerfielder. He has baggage but I think Detroit is the perfect place for him to remake himself as a player and as a person because there’s no pressure on him. With the trash that the Tigers have thrown out there the past two seasons, he will most certainly get an opportunity. There’s a lot of upside to this trade for Detroit and Zimmerman, if nothing else, will give the Phillies innings

          Ahem…..

I don’t think the Tigers are obsessed with competing for the WS in 2020.

They seem to be trying to develop quality players.

In their case, this years garbage may be future years participants on a winning team. On the other hand, the Phillies are supposedly contending for a championship yet again this year, yet they seem to have a lot of proven garbage…..much of it making nice salaries.

Another depth move while the Phillies once again go into the season counting on Velasquez or Pivetta suddenly becoming decent starters. Don’t hold your breath or expect the Phillies to make the playoffs.

already one of the two is gone with Wheeler in. Nola and Eflin should be better with Young gone and their are plenty more serviceable 5s out there. not perfect, but i could imagine it a lot worse.
