Quick Hits: Yankees, Urshela, Orioles, Gonzalez, Sherman

By TC Zencka | January 5, 2020 at 10:42am CDT

It’s an NFL day, but there’s time enough for some quick hits in MLB…

  • Gio Urshela projects as the Opening Day third baseman after a breakout year in the Bronx.  He put up 3.4 rWAR while Miguel Andujar missed the year with injuries, and since Andujar has minor league options remaining, Urshela’s case looks even stronger. Urshela could even expand his portfolio to include backup shortstop duties in 2020, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, though Thairo Estrada and Tyler Wade are the more likely options to take that on should Gleyber Torres need a day off.
  • Second-year Orioles’ manager Brandon Hyde will have a veteran voice in his ear this season now that Fredi Gonzalez has joined his staff. Gonzalez is listed as a general Major League Coach, but the veteran manager looks forward to being freed up to contribute in a lot of different areas, per MASN’s Roch Kubatko. Gonzalez will team with Major League Field Coordinator Tim Cossins to fill the duties traditionally assigned to a bench coach – but the important thing for the Orioles is that Hyde has another influence that he trusts as he looks to build on the development of a very young Orioles’ squad. Gonzalez certainly knows the terrain, having spent the last few seasons as the third base coach for the Miami Marlins. When the 2019 season came to a close, Gonzalez didn’t know exactly what would await him, but he decided it was time to move on from Miami and make himself a free agent. Hyde, meanwhile, managed the High-A and Double-A affiliates in Florida during Gonzalez’ managerial tenure from 2007 to 2010, and he didn’t wait long to add Gonzalez to his staff.
  • As they say, the ball don’t lie, and that’s good enough for Joel Sherman of the New York Post, who marks the Nationals as the winners of last year’s offseason thanks to their championship in October. Of course, a year makes all the difference, as Sherman names the Red Sox the top loser of last year’s offseason for their ill-fated attempt to keep the good vibes going after their 2018 World Series title. Sherman makes this particularly interesting note about the fates of those giving multi-year offers to relief pitchers: “There were 11 relievers who signed for multiple years last season. Six had zero or negative WAR (Baseball Reference version). Just two improved on their WAR from 2018 to 2019, and just three ([Zack] Britton, [Adam] Ottavino and Justin Wilson) improved their ERA.” For what it’s worth, the Nationals can be counted among the group of team’s handing out multi-year deals to a reliever this offseason.

Dark Side: If you believe the Yankees are fine at ss, do you think they will go after Semien, Lindor, or Story when they become available? I initially thought they would because of the money coming off the books the next two years, but I’m not so sure now.

We’re always looking to get better, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the team chase someone like Semien and put Gleyber back at second base. Heck, after all the team is going to have about $80 million dollars coming off the books this next winter. The Yankees are primed and ready to chase anyone they freaking want to. You saw what happened with the Cole: when the Yankees want someone they rarely lose out.

Yeah and its resulted in one title since you first used that method on Giambi back in ’02.

If you keep doing the same thing expecting different results you are….

Okay hater….the winter of 2008 was the last time they really set their sites on free agents and signed all 3….not since then have they been “all in” on anybody.
Given that the Yankees have a certain appeal to certain free agents…yes their commitment to winning each and every year will appeal to some but in todays age they still will need to be the highest bidder to ultimately attract those same free agents as “its always about the money” with free agents.
Each year stands on its own, but if there were 2 glaring issues with the Yankees in 2019, it was a lack of a real #1 and the injury issues….it seems the Yankee organization has moved on both of them.

Pinstripe… Theu have money coming off but the young guys are reaching arb and they will have to replace Tanaka and Paxton. I’d love to see Lindor on the Yankees but I don’t think it will happen. My guess is Torres at short and extend DJLM.

Rgreen: Valid point about Smellsbury. But Cash & crew also set their sites on rebuilding the farm system and rebuilt it in one offseason, going from 15 or ss o to 2. It was truly amazing, and that landed the Yanks in 3 consecutive postseasons. You’ve got to admit, that was great work.

Stop the nonsense about putting Gleyber back at 2nd. He is a natural SS and DJ is a natural, multi Gold Glover at 2nd. Let’s PLEASE finally stop the utter BS by playing guys out of position. This team can be as great as any team since the 98 Yankees if they LEAVE THINGS ALONE. No more of this garbage of playing a SS at second, a gold glove 2b at first and so on. And what the hell the Yankees obsession with the totally worthless Tyler Wade at ANY big league position is beyond belief. This dude is the Ramiro Pena of this era. A totally worthless slug on both offense and defense but somehow remains in the mix. Unreal.

They need to look for at least one more starter because after Cole and Sevy, the rest of this rotation in an absolute dumpster fire. And who exactly did Domingo German murder to warrant such a suspension? What a joke that whole situation is.

Keena – to go a little deeper – Paxton and Tanaka are far from a dumpster dive, not sure what stats you are looking at. Regarding German – it is domestic abuse, so yeah, the suspension is more than warranted.

Frankly, it wouldn’t bother me to have season-long suspensions whenever domestic abuse claims are proven. I get people make terrible choices and regret them, but things like domestic abuse, rape, murder, etc… you should be done. In don’t care he’s a Yankee – this is above sports.

          @Keena

Not sure but you might need to adjust your meds.

          a) How are the Yanks obsessed with Tyler Wade? They see him for what he is..a utlity player who will bounce back and forth from AAA. He is a glove first guy with some speed. Relax. That’s why he spent all of 108 PA last year.

          B) After Cole and Severino the Yanks have Paxton as a #3, Tanaka as a #4 and Happ, German and Montgomery to fill the #5. I bet you that’s likely one of the best rotations 1 thru 5. Yanks might need to acquire another top SP after 2020 because Tanaka and Paxton can walk but I certain;y don’t think the Yanks need to get another top starter for 2020.

          C) Considering the rash of injuries they suffered, having Torres capable of playing SS/2B, DJ able to play 1B, 2B and SS and Urshealla able to play 3B and SS is a great luxury we should be happy to have. Didi was a better SS by the way.

I get that to get Cole we had to let Didi and Bets walk but I think keeping DJ at 2B for a 150 games is a poor use of his talent,

          b)

Yeah, because it’s not like George Steinbrenner was doing that back in the 70’s with Hunter and Jackson, then Winfield, and throughout his tenure until he was suspended. But by all means, keep making stuff up and using ‘02 because it fits your false narrative.

if im honest, id say no. i get you could shuffle things arround for a slight update, but few teams are trading for guys like Lindor if they are simply a slight upgrade. (which, as good as Lindor is, he isnt a very big upgrade for the Yankees) teams simply value prospects too much to simply trade a whole bunch for a partial upgrade, unless its a guy like Andujar in the trade, which i feel like just isnt happening.

@The Mick7 I don’t think the Yankees are going to shuffle Torres back and forth at SS going forward unless his defense collapses. Their younger guys are entering their arb years so money will spent. I think Cashman will continue to spend on starting pitching and a super-bullpen. The team offensively is fine and they don’t need to be the best with balanced pitching.

Nope, they aren’t loaded because they simply are not loaded.

They won 103 games in a division with 4 terrible teams, taking advantage (as usual) of a scam MLB pulls where the Yankees seem to always get the softest schedule imaginable.

They aren’t loaded because the NY media overrates every single player in the org (although some are pretty good, no ones arguing that), nor do they have a lot of depth and they are relying on small samples on guys like Tauchman and Ford.

Its fine, your phony-good team will exit the playoffs early again. Have fun watching injuries pile up once more….

You don’t think they get more out of Stanton then they got last year? Hicks? Judge missed a lot of time. Severino barely played. Nothing from Jordan Montgomery or Andujar. Even Luke Voit didn’t give them anything after August. I would like to see a left handed bat and you could make a case that Torres and DJ will regress, but this is a pretty solid team.

You telling us they will be injured already. Smh. That comment could be true for every teams’s top two position players and best pitcher. I guess you fice zero stock in the Yankees ability to compete with injuries like last year. And Adujar’s bat is legit. Highly doubt it’s fluke. He will be on MLB roster to start the season.

Yankees almost went to the WS last year and arguably, if the Astros didn’t cheat they would have. That’s with injuries to every starter and backups. I believe their total was 32 injuries, many significant, and included all their top producers with the exception of DJ.

Urshela earned his position and even if he can produce close to the offense of last year he’s worth it, particularly with his defense.

Yes, I am obviously a lifelong Yanks fan, but I’m basing my statements on well-known facts. Your hypothetical statement is completely counterintuitive and contradictory to the actual performance last year.

Fans must admit, even if they hate the Yankees, that they are the clear favorites to win the WS.

          Here comes #28 baby!!!!

But I respect your opinion and agree Bos has dominated so far.

2 in 20, strike four. Get your facts straight. I’ll take one in ten for the rest of my life and be happy. And Boston has won 4 in a hundred plus years… FACT I’m not saying Boston’s run this century has not been impressive, though I think SF has had the only dynasty this century, but just putting your comment in wider perspective. I’ve enjoyed 8 WS titles in my lifetime. I’m good with that. How about you and those A’s?

You had one core four, you will never have another. Please stop trying to shoehorn whoever is currently on the team into this.

Yes Torres is amazing, Judge is too but he’s too big and injury prone. Cole also dominated the last 2 years.

Literally every other player has massive flaws that could easily result in a bad year as much as it could a good one.

Yankees have a pretty competitive team, no question, but of course the braindead homers think they are going to win 130 games in 2020, its those types who Im speaking facts and reason to.

Strike Four: I understand what you’re saying and I don’t presume that Yankees will ever be as good as their 98 team again in my lifetime. However, it doesn’t have to be a core four, just a core.

And, you have to admit, 2017 they were picked to be about .500 and they contended; ‘18, they contended; ‘19 they contended; and 20 they will be better yet. They are the clear favorites to win it all and at least be dominant for the next 5 years or so.

And my point is they only contend because they constantly have 2+ teams tanking in their div, that’s why they don’t make the WS anymore, its a phony record that only happened because Selig decided to unbalance the schedule, and they routinely get shown up as not being the “best” in the playoffs.

They are absolutely not the “Clear favorites” and there is nothing to show that they will dominate for 5 years LOL – the Jays are going to push them this season and will start dominating them in 2021-on.

I think Oakland should be the clear favorite to win the AL (you dont get to say “win it all” when you have 1 title in 20 years btw, the WS is too small a sample to predict), but that’s for another time.

I hate the Yankees as much as anybody, but I have to admit they very well have the best team in mlb next year. Their offense and bullpen were among the best in the game, if not the very best. Their only weakness was their rotation. Now they have Cole to be their ACE. If Severino comes back as good as he was before, that’s two of the best starters in baseball. With Paxton as their #3, their playoff rotation will be as good as anybody’s.

The Yankees are loaded and a lot of that talent is younger players. They are certainly in an enviable position. They will probably make the playoffs at the very least. However, there have been “super teams” who haven’t made the playoffs before. Anything can happen.

If they were “loaded” they would have legit All-Stars on the bench and 65 grade prospects up and down the farm, which they do not. They have a few superstars and a lot of guys who “came from nowhere” who are doomed to regress. They lack depth on the farm and have massive injury questions already.

Sure they will beat the Orioles 20+ times for soft wins to get them to 100, but there’s nothing scary about this Yankees team like, at all.

Judge, Torres, Stanton, Sanchez, Cole, Severino, Chapman are all legit All-Star contenders. Paxton could easily be, too. If he’s healthy Voit could be too. He was leading the league with 17 HR’s before he went down to injury. That’s plenty to form a juggernaut, whether they all hit as All-Stars in one season or not. You’re just setting the bar for juggernaut so high no team could match it so you can make a wild, unhinged imaginary point. Again.

Urshela had a .349 BABIP, no way he puts up numbers like that again. Pure small sample luck. He is however, a decent-gloved 3B, much better than Andujar, so he will be the everyday guy, but yeah, .349 BABIPs are not sustainable, his 2019 was pure small sample luck due to having no plate discipline and swinging and hitting them to bad-fielding OF etc.

There is no contest between Urshela and Andujar at 3B. While he may not maintain his great 2019 offensive production, Urshela is an outstanding 3rd baseman. Andujar is a great hitter, but a disaster at 3B. He catches the ball, but has slow transfer and a poor sidearm throw that was bad before his shoulder surgery. The ball will find him and the NYY cannot afford to have him at 3B.

Teams pay big for good offensive players, regardless of their defense.

      good bat+bad glove > bad bat+good glove

Just look at Castellanos, JDM, 2016-2018’s Khris Davis if you dont believe me. If Urshela hits like he has his whole career besides the 2019 campaign and Andujar hits similarly or better in comparison to his 2018 campaign they’ll trot Andujar out to 3B for the majority of the season. Defense is important but everyone here seems to drastically overrate it. If defense was as important as people make it out to be, Brendan Ryan wouldve gotten a $200MM contract and David Ortiz wouldve retired in 2009. Its so silly to imagine that Urshela would start at 3B over Andujar even if he reverts back to his .589 OPS self from 2015-2018. The only way Urshela keeps his job is if he can maintain his 2019 offensive numbers. The Yankees can definitely afford to have a terrible thrower but great hitter at 3B if its indeed the case that Urshela’s 2019 was a fluke.

Andujar and Torres together on the left side would not be recommended. Andujar was awful even before the shoulder injury and scouting reports suggest Torres does not have the range for SS. Urshela is error prone and will likely return to his minor league hitting projections, but he’s a better option with a glove than Andujar obviously.

please people. i cant believe Im at the point where i have to defend the Yankees, who ive so long disliked. but really though, dislike them for valid reasons. no they arent all juiced, yes they have at least a top 3 WS shot at this point, if they aren’t the favorites. suck it up and admit it – your team is, at best, only slightly better than the Yankees.

I think the Yankees addressed their biggest need this offseason in the biggest way possible. Wouldn’t expect a Lindor type deal but with the Yanks you never know what all in means to them.
