A-Rod Reportedly Thinking Of Entering Mets Bidding

By Jeff Todd | February 14, 2020 at 1:51pm CDT

Famed Yankees frenemies Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, division-rival ownership/front office leaders, and only just a few years after their respective retirements from the field of play? It seems as outlandish to suggest as it is tantalizing to imagine. (More of this, please.) Then again, it didn’t seem particularly likely not long ago that A-Rod would be in a booth and that Jeter would be running the Marlins.

We’re still a long way from that … let’s call it fascinating … possibility. But we’ve now seen the first indication that A-Rod has designs on the game’s most interesting opportunity — the availability of one of the game’s two New York-based teams. Putting the offbeat all-time great in a prominent position with the Mets is all but guaranteed to produce heretofore unseen reams of backpage headline material.

According to Thornton McEnery of the New York Post, Rodriguez is “kicking the tires” on trying to spearhead a Mets bid. While he and spouse-to-be Jennifer Lopez are quite wealthy, even they wouldn’t have pockets deep enough to pull this off alone.

As one A-Rod-linked source puts it: “[Rodriguez] genuinely loves the Mets. He and J-Lo have talked about him buying a team ever since Jeter got the Marlins.” It’s certainly hard to imagine a better opening coming together; owning a MLB organization isn’t the sort of opportunity that’s available on demand.

Needless to say, there are quite a few potential obstacles to be cleared before we’ll be treated to a Wilpon-A-Rod transition. The rare shot to land a NYC-based pro sports franchise is naturally going to attract wide interest. And it won’t come cheap. Per the report, the existing ownership group is eyeing a deal in the realm of $3B — not including its ownership interest in SNY but also not coming with the hangover team control situation that seems to have scuttled the recently nixed talks with minority Mets owner Steve Cohen.

Baseball priced themselves out of quality ownership. I’m all for free market but this is way further than that. A player averaging 17 mil a season rarely adds that much value to an organization and when cost is so ridiculously inflated- it keeps quality individuals away.

Arod has absolutely no credibility and is an actor playing a part (terribly). Just like jeter the broke joke- trade market hasn’t recovered from his fire sale ! Yet mlb is so desperate they’ll continue to entertain these low brow pranksters into ownership opportunities.

Same time the quality of baseball has never been deeper. There could be 40 Mlb teams or more if it was a fair playing field and small markets could compete.

Baseball is ran by same folks that teach us how to think no doubt

Even if he isn’t the majority shareholder in a group bid to buy the team, A-Rod will have a hard time getting approved for ownership because of his own steroid suspension and admissions. Manfred is trying to give the sport a “clean slate”, and having a known transgressor as an owner (and let’s not forget, one who used an attack dog lawyer to try to smear MLB in his defense) probably is not his favored outcome.

No, he was right, and you don’t know.

Yes, A-Rod grew up in Miami, But he was a Mets fan, something he has stated on many occasions:

“Growing up in Miami in the ’80s, there were three main outlets for Rodriguez to watch baseball. There was WGN for the Cubs, WTBS for the Braves and WOR for the Mets.

He didn’t have much affection for anyone at Wrigley. He loved Dale Murphy during the years that preceded the Braves’ glorious run in the ’90s. But A-Rod’s favorite team was the Mets, cemented by the fact that they added Hernandez in 1983.

“Him and [Gary] Carter were the finishing two pieces of furniture to create the perfect house,” Rodriguez said. “And they got the championship in ’86.”
          ESPN, 2012.

“Growing up in Miami, I was a huge Mets fan,” Rodriguez said. “Keith Hernandez was my favorite player. And I thought I would make great concessions to go play for the Mets. And I thought it was just a great story for baseball, it would’ve been a great story for me to play for the team I grew up watching. And I thought Mets-Yankees would have been a great story.”

He can be their PED supplier. Its not about ownership. It’s about cutting out the middle man.

Imagine being the poor sucker who A-Rod convinces to put up the capital to fund this deal and having A-Rod & J-Lo as the face of the franchise? And Cohen thought it was tough working with the Wilpons! I will have to admit that I’d love to see the owners box if this were to happen. Imagine the amenities that J-Lo would demand? MTV Cribs comes to mind…

Well, at least that would get A-Roid off the MLB sportscast.

This. If nothing else, it would make the ESPN broadcasts watchable.

And while we’re at it, can Joe Buck be in on this deal? It would certainly make the World Series worlds better.

A-Rod and J-Lo would be a good group to buy the Mets. Cohen is still in the bidding too.

Cohen is out of the bidding and has been for over a week.

A-Roid would also be a terrible thing for MLB

They’d have to widen the seats to be able to fit J WIDE’s caboose in em

I’ll never ever understand why A-Rod, a guy who was caught lying and cheating not once, but twice, was fully welcomed back into the baseball fold. I just don’t get it at all.

At a time when the integrity of baseball is being severely tested, how in the world would anyone think that a former player with his reprehensible record would be good for any franchise?

Alex Rodriguez has no business being involved in MLB. Rodriguez cheated. The Astros cheated. Such players should be held accountable for blatantly disrespecting the game.

That’s exactly what the Mets need…Aroid and Jho in the owners box.

If it keeps Jlo out of the sunday night baseball broadcast booth I’m all for it!.

Makes sense. If they can’t get a cheater as manager might as well sell the whole team to a cheater.

My worse nightmare. Can’t even listen or watch Sun night baseball with him in booth. Turned off Sharktank when he was on. Wilpons are sounding better after hearing this. Only if JLo owned 100% & was face of the team.

Agreed on Sunday night game. I used to love the Sunday night game, now they have the worst booth in all of baseball broadcasting. Awful. ARod needs to go and take Jessica Mendoza with him.

You get 50% of your wish. Mendoza is no longer part of the sunday baseball broadcast team.
