Talks End Between Mets, Steve Cohen Over Ownership Bid

By Mark Polishuk | February 6, 2020 at 9:06pm CDT

9:06PM: Cohen released a statement to reporters (including Kevin Draper of the New York Times) saying, “I’m very disappointed we couldn’t work out a deal, but as an eight percent holder I’m looking forward to a higher bid for the team.  I want to thank the fans for their support and the respect they showed me and I want to thank Commissioner Manfred and MLB for their support through the process.  I gave it my best shot.”

1:54PM: News broke earlier this week that hedge fund manager Steve Cohen was ending his bid to become the Mets’ majority owner, and those reports were confirmed today by no less a source than Rob Manfred.  The commissioner told reporters (including the New York Times’ Kevin Draper and the Associated Press) today that “there is not going to be a transaction” between Cohen and the Mets’ current majority owners, the families of Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz.  As to whether new negotiations could arise between the two sides, Manfred didn’t sound overly optimistic, saying “my soothsaying isn’t great. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

As per Tuesday’s report from Thornton McEnery of the New York Post, the proposed ownership transfer (which would have seen Cohen fully take over an 80 percent controlling share of the Mets by the 2025 season) fell through due to some proposed changes to the deal made by the Wilpons late in negotiating period.  McEnery went into further detail about these changes today in a new piece for the Post, writing that the role of team COO Jeff Wilpon going forward was under dispute.  The Wilpon family wanted Jeff to remain in his current position “and then maintain a senior role within the organization even after Cohen took over.”

Whether this was actually the key breaking point in talks, however, remains unclear.  An unnamed former Mets employee told McEnery it is hard to believe that Jeff Wilpon’s future role would have still been unsettled this late in the process, and McEnery also wrote that “one source familiar with the talks said that Cohen was trying to change the financial terms of the deal.”

Manfred also strongly spoke out in defense of the current Mets ownership group, saying “based on conversations with the buyer and the seller on an ongoing basis, the assertion that the transaction fell apart because of something the Wilpons did is completely and utterly unfair.”

Cohen is still involved with the Mets, as he purchased eight percent of the club back in 2012.  There have yet to be any reports or even real speculation about whether or not he could look to divest himself of his share of the franchise entirely, or whether he will remain part of the ownership mix.  Likewise, it isn’t known if the Wilpons will continue to pursue a sale of the team, though whatever the future holds, it indeed seems like a Wilpon-to-Cohen deal isn’t happening.  As per McEnery, the Wilpons “are upset and angry with the death of this deal coming out in the press and that they are as ready to kill this deal as Cohen is.”

Jeffy wanted control and decision making ability over Cohen’s team for the next 20 year all while being able to freely use Cohen’s money.. Cohen wanted to change the payment structure, and also own SNY which was not in the 2.6 billion dollar sales agreement. Both the Wilponzi’s and Cohen were f___king with aspects of the deal. The Wilponzi’s are notorious in deals as they also tried to pull a fast one on another interested Hedge Funder named Einhorn back in the nineties. The Wilponi’s will never sell the team otherwise Jeffy would have no toys to play with. The ten-to-twenty year deal was mentioned in several newspapers on 2/6/20. No other groups of potential owners have come forth as far has been reported in the news of in any baseball reports?

Once again, MLB is coming to the defense of the sports worst owners. They forced the McCourts out of LA for less than the Madoff scandal the Wilpons got caught up in. They SHOULD have been forced out then and there. But, no. Selig floated them not 1, but 2 loans to help keep them in power. They’re STILL losing money in MLBs biggest market. Yet, here is Manfred carrying the torch for Selig in defending these clowns. It pays to be in the Good ole boys club of MLB owners it seems.

The McCourts were going through a divorce and it came out they were improperly using team funds. The Mets got burned by Madoff and while old saying of things being too good to be true may have applied, had they not committed to a third of the cost of building Citi Field, they could have absorbed things easier. Unfortunately budgets are forecasted years in advance and they got caught trying to pay committed costs with investment returns that just disappeared overnight. Add in the government clawing back past “profits” they had already spent and the perfect storm was created. I’m no Wilson fan but your anger really is not fair in this instance. My argument would be their liquid financial strength may not have been sufficient for their original purchase to have been approved.

The Wilson’s was as guilty as Bernie Maddoff. They are the only ones who collected profits from his Ponzi scheme. That is the reason they had to pay back past profits. The Wilson’s used Mets money to buy in, isn’t that improper use of team funds as well?
Also you are only partially right about the McCourts having to sell, it wasn’t the misappropriation of funds. It was the fact they couldn’t make payroll because Selig wouldn’t let him take a loan out against the money for the tv deal he signed. MLB basically froze the Dodgers accounts and then made them sell because they couldn’t pay the players.
But when the Wilpons couldn’t make payroll Bud Selig loaned the Mets the operating cost with 1% interest. The Dodgers has the money coming unlike the Wilpons who has been using the Mets money to payback the victims of the Ponzi scheme they was a part of.

        Bulls…!

The Wilpons are several orders of magnitude worse than Frank McCourt on McCourt’s worst day.

The Dodgers made the playoffs four of McCourt’s eight years as owner and the Dodgers farm system was smoking hot with talent the whole time and when McCourt was forced out.

To Bmac and Forest: first MLB argued the McCourts were using the baseball team to pay personal expenses related to their divorce but as I recall, Frank McCourt tried to void an existing TV contract to be able to seek a better deal. Also, my point had nothing to do with the on field results. If the league could force ownership change based on on-field success, there would be constant ownership turnover through the league.

Everything you or I ever read about Frank McCourt and the reason he was forced out is a lie.

Why did FOX sell McCourt the Dodgers and Dodgers Stadium for just $400 million? The parking lot was worth at least two billion then. It’s probably worth near five now.

Your completely wrong about the tv contract. That was an already signed deal for a 2+ bil. McCourt wanted to take a loan against some of the future revenue to cover operating cost and personal expenses. It was put under investigation by the commissioners office. The Dodgers went so far as to restructure the remaining money owed to Andruw Jones because they couldn’t make payroll that month.

It’s one thing to be a minority owner but why would Cohen invest so much and keep Jeff Wilson as the COO for five years and then continue as a key executive? How much say does Cohen currently have as a minority owner? Different situation but this reminds me of Boston and years ago. One day Buddy Leroux was the team trainer and the next he was a team executive fighting for ownership control.

Mets fan sure like to act like they’re a playoff team, despite having a better shot at 4th place in the division with a win now team.

Which happens to have a pretend GM trying to win at all cost to save his pretend job and help his boss not look insane for :

A.) Hiring an agent to be a GM and
B.) Doing it only because no real GM in baseball would accept his demand to skip a rebuild and push immediately for the playoffs.

The worst thing that a smart Mets fan could ever want is for the Mets to have even a slim chance of making the playoffs near the trade deadline where BVW can mortgage the teams future in an attempt to save his own skin and make his dumb boss not look dumber by grasping for a playoff push. He literally has nothing to gain by thinking in the teams best interest past this Sept.

But as a Braves fan, I wish them a lot of luck, a great first half, and a very active trade deadline.

Maybe you guys can finally get a closer if you dig out the very last few of those prospects left in the system and stack them all together, eh?

Wow I didn’t know a worse lineup included Acuna, Freeman, Albies, Ozuna, Swanson, and Markakis as good braves hitters vs. Alonso, Mcneil, Conforto, Davis, Ramos, and Rosario as good Mets hitters. (Braves have done it longer, and better).

As for starting pitching, the Mets beat the Braves 10/10, Degrom is the best pitcher in the game, Syndergaard needs to bounce back, and Stroman as your 3 is great. The Braves have Soroka who is terrific (just not Degrom), and after that you have Hamels, Folty, and a butt ton of great pitching prospect on the rise.

The Braves have a better bullpen than the mets, but if Diaz and Familia bounce back, they could be just as good. But with Will Smith, the Brave’s is terrific.

I can see the Mets being the 2nd WC and 2nd in the division, but still a good 10 games back of the Braves.

The Mets will have less 800 ops bats in their lineup..

Rosario and Ramos will probably be over 800 ops this year
And cano probably has 750 this year
And our bench is better than theirs with ces lowrie and smith

Our lineup is deeper. They are really a 3 stud and the rest mediocre lineup. Even ESPN ranked us as the 3rd best lineup in baseball. If your not a hater you see our lineup is actually very good

I mean, i’m a Giants fan, note the Bay bridge picture and John Miller quote as my name…before you say it yes, we will suck this year but, it’s kinda expected when you win 3 titles in a decade and have to pay longer contracts to keep key players there (not that you would know what a championship is like). I just don’t know why you gotta be so bitter about a franchise (small market no less) who beat you in the WS. Hell, do you even play them this year?

I wish I could properly convey how much hate I have for the Wilpons, owners of my favorite team. If the team is not sold, I think I’m switching over to the Dodgers. I can’t take this anymore.

Not sure what is the mindset on the Wilpons they want to sell the team but keep their name still in the mix associated with the Mets so let me sell the team but oh by the way you have to keep Jeff Wilpons role intact. “You can’t have your cake and eat it too”.

As for Manfred what a joke he is becoming to take sides of the Wilpons is horrible so he expects an investor that is interested in buying that sorry franchise to give the fans hope and you expect that new interested buyer to keep the old regime in tact and not bring in his own people for certain positions.

Mets & Knicks it seems are operated by the same cum that was spit upon by their fathers on a drunken night. possibly by the same woman.

The quote from manfred about the “transaction” is clickbait. The full quote is, “All I can tell you is right now, my belief is there is not going to be a transaction.” A second quote says, “The first is that there is not going to be a transaction. My belief is that’s accurate.” Again, you can take this at face value, or understand that him saying anything contrary to what’s been reported could be seen as collusion or interference. Also, the original sentiment held by most that Cohen is publicly releasing this information as leverage is still a very real possibility.

There’s basically no new information at this point and all articles point to a singular individual, Jeff Wilpon, being the reason this deal hasn’t gone through yet. The fact that the Wilpons can even still own a franchise and run a team while being in over $350 million worth of debt is astounding. Manfred definitely sees this and will have to do something at some point. He’s most likely saving face until that time comes.

You may be right about Yankees fans wouldn’t be able to handle a long championship droughts. It takes fans that are used to it…like say a team that hasn’t won a championship since 1986.

All the Mets fans need to do is boycott all games and don’t watch the games on TV until Wilpon sells the team . Dodgers had the same problem with Frank McCourt, once they boycotted Frank realized he had to sell.

This really is good news for the Braves. The last thing the Braves need is ONE more team that doesnt feel the need to behave like a middle market club like them.

But still, I feel bad for Mets fans. The Wilpons are one of the worst owners in the game. We may never know for sure but Cohen seemed like the kind of owner any fan should want for their team.

If Willy Wonka was singing a song about the Mets, it would go as follows:

    Who can take franchise,
    and sprinkle it in pooooo,
    cover it with bull mess,
    and a disaster or two?

    The New York Mets can!

Who can take a fan base,
    and make them all cryyyyy,
    take a dump on them,
and make them want to die?

    The New York Mets can!

    The New York Mets can,
cause they don’t give a crud,
so they make their team a jooooke!

    The New York Mets make,
    every mistake,
    dissatisfying and ridiculous!
    Talk about making you nauseous!
It’s just so funny and vicious!

    Who can take tomorrow,
    and kick it down stream,
    cause nothing but sorrow,
making their fans whine, wail and screeeeeam!?

    The New York Mets can!

    The New York Mets can,
cause they don’t give a crud,
so they make their team a joooooke!

And their team is a joke,
cause they Wilpons don’t give a darn!

Those Wilpons are classic NY con artists. First they cheat Nelson Doubleday out of a fair price for his half of the team
(thanks to help from commish Selig) then they tell this Macher Cohen “yes, give us the dough while we make you wait five years to take over, BUT WAIT, my son gets to have a job for life letting you “advise” HIM while HE makes all the decisions.” The cojones on these guys are historic!
