Padres Sign Seth Frankoff To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | February 14, 2020 at 9:58am CDT

The Padres have signed right-hander Seth Frankoff to a minor league deal and invited him to Major League Spring Training, tweets MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell. He’s repped by Vanguard Sports.

Frankoff, 31, has spent the past two seasons pitching for the Doosan Bears in the Korea Baseball Organization. In that time, he’s logged a combined 3.68 ERA with 8.3 K/9, 2.9 BB/9 and 0.6 HR/9 over the life of 266 2/3 innings (50 starts). Prior to his time in the KBO, Frankoff pitched in the Athletics, Dodgers and Cubs organizations. He appeared in one game with the Cubs’ big league team in 2017 but has not appeared in the Majors otherwise. In 165 1/3 innings of Triple-A ball in his career, Frankoff owns a 4.46 ERA and a 152-to-68 K/BB ratio.

Frankoff gives the Friars some depth both in the rotation and in the bullpen, as he’s pitched extensively in both roles throughout a decade-long professional career. San Diego has added Zach Davies to its rotation mix and Emilio Pagan to the bullpen this winter via trade. The Friars have also dished out free-agent contracts to Drew Pomeranz (four years, $34MM), Craig Stammen (two years, $9MM) and Pierce Johnson (two years, $5MM). That slate of acquisitions dampens Frankoff’s hopes of breaking camp with the club, but he’s a reasonable depth option to have on hand in the event of injuries throughout the pitching staff.

The epitome of an organizational depth piece. Nothing to see here.

(I’m still trying to wrap my head around the Pierce Johnson signing. That makes no sense.)

Perhaps they scouted him … and you didn’t?

Bryan Mitchell … Erik Johnson … Jered Weaver … I can list at least a dozen more over the last 6 years. A lot more if you want to include position players. You have no case. Take off the rose colored glasses and actually look at it objectively.

He trains with Gore, they’re from the same town. It seems they’re gearing up depth for a big trade perhaps.

Not likely. Preller’s done enough damage.

Apex is nowhere near Whiteville. Apex is in Raleigh and Whiteville is a drive through town on the way to Ocean Isle

      It’s a 2 year deal for a total of 5 mill.

If you get 3-4 era for a 6th/ multiple innings pen guy you get way more than your money’s worth.

If he gives you 4.5era as a “clean up a bad start” guy still worth 5 mill so you’re not taxing your other pen arms on a blow out.

So you’re saying it’s good value to fill in the last spot in your bullpen, that most teams fill with a guy at major league minimum or a minor league FA “find”, with a guy with a $5M guarantee over 2 years? You probably want the government to give you free health care, too…,

Yup. 2 year deal at $5MM for a scrub. I think Preller’s actually trying to get fired.

I’m sick of fellow Padre fans trying to justify everything with ” If … If … If.” Sometimes its OK to question a bad deal.

Likewise, fans like you are just a bunch mental boomers that just find fault in anything. Glass half empty always gripe about everything Padres related arm chair GM nobodies who just wants to be pissed and scream bloody murder because the team he/she supports is doing what he thinks is right. Go bang on a trash can if you want some stress relief and stick to basketball in the mean time.

I disagree. Johnson has obviously had a high ERA but he gave up less than a hit an inning, he struck out as many as hits he gave up. The only thing that hurt them is the walks which increased his WHIP and conversely the runs. The Padres could certainly see something from the pitching coach perspective that the feel is fixable and make a great bullpen piece out of him. I would contend that they know better than us and in reality $5m over two years is virtually nothing in the sport. Lastly, I am sure many here said the same thing about Hand and others and they became some of the best relief pitchers in baseball so the Padres should probably be given the benefit of the doubt.

Exactly. The guy can’t find the plate, and that’s the story of his entire career. ML pitchers need to throw strikes. Ask Bryan Mitchell. Some pitchers aren’t fixable. That’s why they never sniff the big leagues.

This guy is expensive organizational depth. At $5MM.

It sure looks like Preller really isn’t going to try and improve the pitching staff. I mean his butts on the line here and he goes after one of the best outfielders in the game, but Zack Davies is our big slash? Very disappointed as a Padres fan.

Don’t forget Seth Frankoff, Jared Eckhoff, Jimmy Yacabonis, Chih-Wei Who?, and Kyle Bearclaw. If he’s trying to win a game of baseball name Scrabble, he’s doing a good job. Otherwise it’s a AA/AAA group. That’s the same every year – the scrubs change organizations to fill in the AAA rosters.
