Steal 26 Players And Build A Roster

By Connor Byrne | May 7, 2020 at 7:24pm CDT

Here’s a fun exercise during a time without much real baseball: Imagine you’re an expansion general manager who can take one player from 26 of the game’s 30 rosters to build a full major league team. You can’t steal any prospects, though, so someone like Wander Franco’s off limits, and there are going to be occasions where you’ll have to draft for need instead of talent. That might mean passing on someone’s superstar for a comparatively nondescript player at a different position. For the most part, you also have to take affordability and team control into account. Here’s what I came up with…

National League East:

  • Braves – Ronald Acuna Jr., outfielder: A 22-year-old superstar who’s signed to a team-friendly contract through at least 2026 (and possibly ’28 depending on club options)? Don’t mind if I do.
  • Nationals – Juan Soto, outfielder: I’ve quickly filled my starting corner outfield with Acuna and Soto, 21. The spectacular Soto brings five years of team control to the table.
  • Mets – Jacob deGrom, starting pitcher: He’s on the wrong side of 30 (he’ll be 32 in June) and owed $120.5MM through 2023, but I’m OK with spending big on a back-to-back National League Cy Young winner. I’ve got my ace.
  • Phillies – Aaron Nola, starting pitcher: Nola will probably be a back-end starter on this team, which is not a knock on him. The soon-to-be 27-year-old’s a proven righty who will make roughly a guaranteed $35MM through 2022. That’s not much relative to his value, and Nola’s also controllable in 2023 by way of what currently looks like a reasonable $16MM club option.
  • Marlins – Brian Anderson, third baseman/outfielder: He’s overqualified for a bench spot, but that’s a role Anderson will fill on this roster. He’ll be in the mix for four years, including one more pre-arbitration season.

National League West:

  • Dodgers – Walker Buehler, starting pitcher: There are certainly multiple appealing options in LA, but I’ll take the budding ace in Buehler, who’s 25 and won’t become a free agent until after 2024.
  • Diamondbacks – Ketel Marte, middle infield/outfield: This is an easy pick, as the versatile 26-year-old is fresh off a near-MVP season and will continue to play on a bargain contract for a few more seasons. He’ll make a combined $14MM over the next two years, and comes with a pair of affordable club options totaling $22MM.
  • Giants – Pass.
  • Rockies – Scott Oberg, reliever: Kind of a strange pick when the likes of Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story, Jon Gray and German Marquez are on the roster, but I’m picking for need here and trying to keep the budget down. Oberg, 30, put up his second straight terrific season in 2019, and having inked a three-year, $13MM deal in December, the hope is that he’ll continue to provide plenty of surplus value.
  • Padres – Emilio Pagan, reliever: Passing on Fernando Tatis Jr. looks insane, but I feel OK about finding a high-end young shortstop later. This is another need filled at a low price – Pagan, 29, is quietly excellent and under control through 2023.

National League Central:

  • Cardinals – Jack Flaherty, starting pitcher: Sign me up for a front-end rotation piece who’s 24 and won’t be eligible to hit free agency until after 2023.
  • Brewers – Josh Hader, reliever: Christian Yelich is the best player on the Brewers and maybe the best player in the NL. However, I already have my corner outfield set with Acuna and Soto, and I have a certain someone in mind for center. That leaves me with the two-time reigning NL Reliever of the Year in Hader, another star who’s not slated to visit the open market until after 2023.
  • Cubs – Willson Contreras, catcher: I’ve got my starting backstop, a big-hitting, cannon-armed 27-year-old with three seasons’ control left. That sounds good. I’ll have that.
  • Reds – Pass. Many talented players on the Reds, but no one who fits on this particular roster.
  • Pirates – Bryan Reynolds, outfielder: Like the aforementioned Brian Anderson, Reynolds is ridiculously overqualified for a bench role, but he’ll nonetheless be a sub on this club.

American League East:

  • Yankees – Gleyber Torres, shortstop: A Marte-Torres middle infield sounds pretty appealing. Torres is still just 23, and he won’t become a free agent until the conclusion of the 2024 campaign.
  • Rays – Nick Anderson, reliever: He’s not the best or most valuable player on the Rays by a long shot, but the 29-year-old Anderson’s yet another major threat out of the bullpen – one who fits this team. MLBTR’s TC Zencka recently wrote about Anderson’s ascent.
  • Red Sox – Rafael Devers, third baseman: The infield’s almost full now. Devers is a 23-year-old who nearly put up 6.0 fWAR in 2019 and still has four seasons of control remaining.
  • Blue Jays – Ken Giles, reliever: It would be easy to grab Vladimir Guerrero Jr. or Bo Bichette here, but I don’t have starting spots for either one. Ergo, with relief help still a need, I’m taking the one-year rental in Giles.
  • Orioles – Pass.

American League West:

  • Astros – Yordan Alvarez, outfielder/first baseman: I’m picking the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, 22, as my designated hitter.
  • Athletics – Matt Olson, first baseman: The infield’s now complete. The 26-year-old Olson’s a power-hitting defensive standout who can’t be a free agent until after 2023.
  • Rangers – Jose Leclerc, reliever: This is another selection that puts need and affordability at the forefront. The flamethrowing Leclerc has four guaranteed seasons and less than $20MM on his deal, not to mention a $6.25MM club option for 2024.
  • Angels – Mike Trout, outfielder: Who else but a living legend? And who wouldn’t sign up for an outfield of Acuna and Soto flanking Trout?
  • Mariners – Tom Murphy, catcher: Contreras’ backup, and as MLBTR’s Anthony Franco wrote last month, someone who was really effective last season.

American League Central:

  • Twins – Taylor Rogers, reliever: This is another example of addressing a need over choosing a team’s top player, but that’s not to say Rogers is a slouch. The 29-year-old lefty has kept runs off the board with aplomb throughout his career and still has three years of control left.
  • Indians – Shane Bieber, starting pitcher: This soon-to-be 25-year-old workhorse comes with a half-decade of control.
  • White Sox – Aaron Bummer, reliever: In a vacuum, this is a bad pick. After all, the White Sox have the likes of Yoan Moncada, Yasmani Grandal, Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert and Lucas Giolito on their roster. Again, though, this is an example of mixing need with long-term affordability. Bummer, 26, was lights-out last season, and he signed a club-friendly extension after that.
  • Royals – Whit Merrifield, second baseman/outfielder: The All-Star will be coming off the bench, which is a testament to how good this roster is.
  • Tigers – Pass.

There you have it. Here’s an overview of the roster …

Starting Lineup:

  • Catcher – Willson Contreras
  • First baseman – Matt Olson
  • Second baseman – Ketel Marte
  • Shortstop – Gleyber Torres
  • Third baseman – Rafael Devers
  • Center field – Mike Trout
  • Right field – Ronald Acuna Jr.
  • Left field – Juan Soto
  • Designated hitter – Yordan Alvarez

Bench:

  • Brian Anderson, Bryan Reynolds, Tom Murphy, Whit Merrifield

Rotation:

  • Jacob deGrom, Aaron Nola, Walker Buehler, Jack Flaherty, Shane Bieber

Bullpen:

  • Scott Oberg, Emilio Pagan, Josh Hader, Nick Anderson, Ken Giles, Jose Leclerc, Taylor Rogers, Aaron Bummer

—

Based on the criteria I followed, that’s my 26-man team. It was enjoyable and challenging to construct. Feel free to put together your own roster.

maybe stretching the rules a bit, but id consider taking a SP and sticking them in the pen in some of these situations. Snell and Giolitio over Anderson and Bummer for example. Maybe add Berrios in there. a stretch for sure but that’s how id play it.

Bummer as the White Sox pick was kind of a head=scratcher for me. If it were me, it’d have been between Moncada, Giolito, and Robert (as 4th OF). Not sure I’d take starters and try to convert them, though. Different mindset required and a slightly different skillset. No doubt I’d rather have Giolito than Bummer, but if I need a guy to lock down the 8th inning only, I’m taking Bummer.

If you’re going this route, picking the best player on each team regardless of contract, you’d have a salary well north of $300M/yr, maybe north of $400M. He said at the beginning that contracts were a significant consideration, so if he had done this, his IF and/or pitching staff would have had to suffer. Also, over the next seven years, I’d rather have Acuna than Betts.

Really fun exercise. A target budget would let us really nerd out on this.

Definitely want Trout, Soto, and Buehler. One megastar and two cost controlled guys right there. So many shortstops there’s really no wrong answer there.

    I’ll be back.

MLBTR should do more of these. What we really needed was a budget since you said we have to keep finances in mind. Something like a $160 million payroll. That should give us enough financial flexibility to have some fun with this but makes it clear that we can’t so easily just go and grab Mike Trout and Gerrit Cole.

I’ll come back with a team later though. Still a lot of fun for the baseball geeks.

The budget would be a good idea. All of the writers could choose their favorite rosters from our choices and run a poll for bragging rights.

This would be a great idea. Also, they should judge the roster based on not just this year, but three or four years out. If you want a guy with just two years of control left, fine, but it’d be a mark against the long-term contention window of your team.

Sort of. Difference is that in some cases he passed over a more talented player largely because they had a huge or near-to-expiration contract. The AS game doesn’t have that restriction, so there’d be no way Yelich doesn’t make the team. Also, with the AS game, every team gets at least one representative and most have more. Here it was a max of 1 per team.

Pick one player from each teams 40 man roster, but you can’t use the players on their 25 man roster. Then have a dollar amount you can spend on free agents to fill holes. The free agency money could be a set amount… you can use it to lure 1 or 2 big free agents or spread it out for a balanced team.

So, who do you pick from the Yankees? Do you go with an immediate starter like Clint Frazier, or do you invest in a prospect like Deivi Garcia? Do you choose to build with prospects and then sign free agents to field a team? Or do you draft a team and sign 1 or 2 big time free agents and compete right now?

That way, you wouldn’t pass on the Orioles, Reds, Giants and Tigers… You would choose Orioles Ryan Mountcastle as 1B, Reds OF Aristides Aquino, Jake Rogers as a catcher from the Tigers. Pitcher Logan Webb of the Giants. Or whoever… Reds have Stephenson at catcher or Jankowski if you want a major league outfielder.

In 5 years, there will be a new round of overhyped prospects, and 75% of your team will be out of the league. Or at the very least, their prospects will be significantly dimmed. You COULD have a good team then, but you would have to hit on far more players than is likely.

Now if you supplemented your few successes with quality free agents at the positions of failures, you could possibly have a 2016 Cubs-style season.

No hard rules, but it goes against the spirit of the exercise. If you owned an expansion team, you wouldn’t be able to afford all of these guys, so contracts are supposed to matter. And extending all those FA’s makes your already out-of-control payroll situation much, much worse. Luxury tax would push the cost of your team past $500M in a few years.

LOL at goes against the spirit of the exercise. So what exactly is an acceptable limit then? Since it wasn’t defined I really didn’t go against the spirit of the exercise.

To me, the spirit of the exercise was to build the best roster possible. Since everyone has different opinions of what an acceptable payroll is and there wasn’t a defined limit it was totally within scope of the exercise

Just because you’re a new expansion team doesn’t mean that owner won’t have money and come in looking for spend.

I like it. The problem with the SS class is that the best three, IMO (Semien, Baez, and Lindor) are all soon to be free agents. Building a team for both now and the future with that in mind isn’t easy. I think Torres is the best pick and I’d have gotten Bieber from Cleveland and shuffled around a couple other picks to get a reliever.

If I could change Connor’s team I think Realmuto, Cole, Baez is better trio than Nola, Torres, Castillo.

I’d totally take Guerrero Jr over Giles for the Jays and drop Anderson instead for whatever Marlins reliever has the best long term value.

I know you lose some positional flexibility here but the potential is way too much to pass on.

So for my team, I tried to keep my cost low assuming I’d be an expansion team and pick players that have some more upside than what they have currently displayed. But I have also sprinkled in a few vets like Posey and Hand to provide some experience to my team and to fit the role of the team. Hand as the setup lefty and Posey as the backup catcher, 1B option… Let me know what you think of the roster!

What I like about this challenge is that everybody will have a different team. I like this. You kept it cheap, and yet still had a good team. I would just replace Kikuchi with John Means of the O’s.

Colome over Bummer? Even if you’re set on going with a reliever from the White Sox, Bummer’s advanced metrics were way better than Colome’s.

It’s easy to eliminate the Giants, Orioles, Tigers from everyone, but I think to make this more fun, you should choose your 26 man roster from every team EXCEPT the final 4 from last season. That means no Nats, Dodgers, Astros, or Yankees. To make it even tougher, you also have to pick players under 30. Who doesn’t like a challenge?

    ATL – OF Ronald Acuna
    MIA – 3B Brian Anderson
    PHI – C JT Realmuto
    NYM – RP Edwin Diaz

    STL – SP Jack Flaherty
    PIT – RP Keone Kela
    CHC – 2B Javier Baez
    CIN – SP Luis Castillo
    MIL – RP Josh Hader

    ARZ – OF Ketel Marte

    CLE – SS Francisco Lindor

    OAK – 1B Matt Olson
    SEA – C Tom Murphy
    TEX – RP Jose LeClerc
    LAA – OF Mike Trout

    Starters
    1B Olson
    2B Baez
    3B Devers
    SS Lindor
    C Realmuto

    Rotation

    Means

    Closer
    Hader

    Set Up
    Giles

    Rest of pen
    Diaz, Jimenez, LeClerc, Kela, Anderson

The rotation is weaker than I would like, but has the potential to be great. I also was thinking NL, so no DH here., but I think you could easily find a DH if needed Other than that, I think this team could seriously compete for a title.

Bellinger can play the corner OF if/when Yelich Acuna can’t go.
    Reynolds/Haniger are Backup to Trout
I’d play Chapman at 1b first when Bellinger is moved or whichever Catcher at 1b

Backups of the middle infield of Tatis for SS and Marte at 2b can easily be used for Starters and not lose a step in strength of team.

SPs 1-3 are obvious top end. Snell is 1year removed from a CY Young Clevinger or Lynn I feel can handle both a BP or 5th starter and do say quite well with the offense behind them.
BP Chapman rarely disappoints. Giles will be Closer #2 since this team is winning 162 games
Rogers/Moronta have a solid career to sit in the bullpen mid innings
Green has the perfect 6th or 7th inning role.

I didn’t pick players from the Reds, Marlins, Royals, and Orioles.

Excuse me for nitpicking, but Detroit traded Shane Greene to Atlanta last summer. You might want to take Jimenez from Detroit instead, who is presumably a worse pitcher, but cheaper and offers more control.

    Editors notes:
    1. This will be LONG!
    2. My priorities: Consistency in production. For example, back to back all-star seasons. For starters, in addition to run prevention, consistent health was big for me.
    3. ONE YEAR PAYROLL CAP: $160 Million

    LINE UP

    C. J.T. Realmuto PHI
    1B. A. Rizzo CHI C
    2B. A. Albies ATL
    3B. A. Bregmen HOU
    SS. X. Bogaerts BOS

    CF. K. Marte ARI
    RF. C. Yelich MIL
    LF. J. Soto WAS

    Easiest pick: Realmuto
    Hardest pick: Albies

When I looked at the Braves roster, I really struggled. If you are going to choose 1 player you are probably going to choose either Freemen or Acuna. So what gives, right? Well, position scarcity played a part in this but the way I saw it I was going to either go with Rizzo/Albies or Freemen/Merrifield and I think RAzzbies wins over FreeField. Also, as much as I love Acuna there is a lot of depth in the outfield. I imagine somebody will say something about Bregmans stats may not be real but I just don’t buy that. He is the model of consistency, his strike outs are always among the lowest his walks are among the highest; you just can’t fake that kind of plate discipline.

    ROTATION

    1. J. deGrom NYM
    2. C. Morton TB
    3. J. Flaherty STL
    4. S. Buehler LAD
    5. S. Beiber CLE

    Easiest Pick: Jacob deGrom
    Hardest Pick: Charlie Morton

I was originally going to go with Lucas Giolito but that is a lot of youth in the rotation. Morton has pitched back to back ace like seasons which gives me more confidence. His production is low cost and this would also allow me to take Grandal for my White Sox rep. It’s quite a luxury to have baseball’s second best catcher as your back up.

    BULLPEN

    1. K. Yates SD
    2. A. Chapman NYY
    3. T. Rogers MIN
    4. K. Giles TOR
    5. M. Gonzalez SEA
    6. J. Samardzija SF
    7. M. Boyed DET

My bullpen turned out to be better than I thought it would. I wouldn’t say my intention was to punt. It was part of my plans and it just worked well together. I have three starters in this group. Gonzalez has some considerable upside, Samardzija has been pretty consistent at soaking up innings and Boyed..well, I picked him at the end when your choices are few. I’m not one of those Big Boyed Believers but he does have back to back years pitching 170 and 185 IP. That’s good enough for the last spot on my 26 man roster and just maybe his next seasons performance proves me wrong.

    BENCH

    1. W. Merrifield KC
    2. Y. Grandal CHI W
    3. S. Marte PIT
    4. T. Mancini BAL
    5. S. Choo TEX
    6. D. Fletcher LAA

    Easiest Pick: Whit Merrifield
    Hardest Pick: Shin Soo Choo

The bench is where most teams find most of their flexibility. Merrifield might presently be the AL’s best utility player but Fletcher is much better than most realize. So is that why I made Fletcher my LAA choice instead of Trout? No, of course not but I chose a one year payroll limit of $160 million because just picking an all-star line up is easy. Mancini can play the outfield in a passable manner but from what Ranger fans tell me, the same is not recommended for Choo. Both are still potent bats though and Choo is especially capable at drawing walks and still has maintained a considerable amount of speed. Really these two are here to either DH or pinch hit if I need either a home run or a walk to keep an inning alive.

    BATTING ORDER
    1. Ozzie Albies
    2. Juan Soto
    3. Christian Yelich
    4. Alex Bregman
    5. Xander Bogaerts
    6. Anthony Rizzo
    7. Ketel Marte
    8. J.T. Realmuto
    9. Trey Mancini

So in this collection of hitters, why am I placing my weakest batter at lead off? Give me a minute here…………. Okay. I think I just wrapped my brain around saying Albies is my weakest batter. Albies probably has the best speed on the bases, except of course Yelich. But ya, I am not batting Yelich lead off. Soto with his league average speed but incredible ability to get on base really is the best reason to bat him second. Only Yelich gets on base more but then..how many times do I have to prove that Yelich is the best option for just about every spot in my line up? I just figured to put him in the place he can do the most damage. Maybe some Brewer’s fans have experiential understanding on this that I don’t but for the moment, it makes since. The only other noticeable detail is the low batting spot for K.Marte. In my opinion, he is my 26 man rosters biggest risk. What if 2018 is the real Marte? Picking him is a gamble that the ceiling is more prevalent than the floor.

If we’re just talking about this year, it’s interesting you’d pick Kluber over Minor. Kluber probably has the higher ceiling if he fully recovers, but I think I’d have gone for Minor because I feel his output can be more easily predicted.

It was down to a coin flip between starting Chapman or Arenado at third. Chapman has 2 Platinum Gloves so he gets the nod. But essentially those two are interchangeable in their spots.

Arenado has 3 Platinum Gloves, so how does Chapman’s 2 get the nod? It’s your choices, but I was just curious. If they are completely interchangable, it seems like it would be better to pick someone different from 1 of the 2 teams. Trevor Story would seem to be a clear upgrade over Kingery and Matt Olson would be a major upgrade over Evan White.

But once again, it’s your team so I’ll just let it go. Have a good one.
