Phillies Select Phil Gosselin

By Jeff Todd | July 24, 2020 at 12:27pm CDT

The Phillies have selected the contract of infielder Phil Gosselin. He’ll join the team’s active roster.

Gosselin, 31, has never shown much with the bat at the major league level. But this’ll be the eighth-straight season in which he found his way to the bigs, thanks largely to his respected and versatile glovework.

He raked against crappy competition. Hence why he still finds work. Plus he raked as a pinch hitter

He finds work because defense counts and he plays several positions well. MLB baseball and fantasy baseball are not the same

Congratulations on your 30-30 or 27-33 record getting you in the playoffs this year. Baseball is now the new hockey. Enjoy

First off, the Stanley Cup playoffs is the most exciting event in sports, so bad analogy. I don’t like the rule change for baseball, but anything to add more games to this weird season.

I’m a diehard but I felt like we still had a outside shot at contending this year before any expanded playoff formats. Next year, if they re-sign JT and add a starter and a BP arm to replace Arrieta and Robertson this team could be filthy.

    Imagine swapping this rotation:
    Nola
    Wheeler
    Arrieta
    Efflin
    Velazquez

    With something like this :
    Nola
    Wheeler
    Mike Minor
    Spencer Howard
    Efflin/Velazquez

You guys gotta make a run for Bauer, Paxton, or Tanaka. If the Phils sign 2 of those 3 pitchers they will win the NL East next season for sure

The Phils will fly to the crown on Gosselin wings….just one of those rings.

He had a really good spring. He earned a spot.

The guy’s had like 5 really good springs only to not produce once the season starts, but whatever, it’s your roster.

Why get worked up about the final man on the 30-man? Hopefully, Bohm comes up in a week. Besides, rosters will be cut pretty quickly.

It boggles my mind when posters react poorly to this sort of signing. Teams have extra spots so you MIGHT see a few players make it that you otherwise wouldn’t.

But even without that, these are depth signings. Every team is going to pretty much pick clean whatever talent is left on the scrap heap. You probably only have to do one thing well at the major league level to make it; run the base paths, have a plus glove, have a .280 batting average even if all you do is hit singles, draw walks, hit home runs and so on. Do any one of those well and it’s probably enough to make it on some teams 60 man or better, particularly this year.

Gosselin went 3-3 with two homers in his first start at DH. I know it’s early, but I think he deserves to be here.
