Blue Jays Option Brandon Drury, Outright Thomas Pannone

By Connor Byrne | August 28, 2020 at 5:05pm CDT

The Blue Jays have optioned infielder Brandon Drury to their alternate training site and outrighted hurler Thomas Pannone, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet tweets. The Drury move clears roster space for newly acquired right-hander Taijuan Walker.

The 28-year-old Drury has been a massive disappointment for Toronto, which acquired him from the Yankees for lefty J.A. Happ before the July 2018 trade deadline. Drury, who had his moments with the Diamondbacks from 2015-17, struggled during his brief Yankees stint before they gave up on him. His issues have continued as a member of Toronto’s roster, as he owns a horrid .211/.254/.360 line with 15 home runs in 496 plate appearances. Drury’s minus-6 wRC+ across 49 plate trips this year ranks fifth to last among 300 major leaguers who have amassed at least 40 PA.

The left-handed Pannone, 26, had been in limbo since the Jays designated him Aug. 24, but he’ll stick with the organization after clearing waivers. Pannone, who combined for a 5.43 ERA/5.14 FIP over 116 innings from 2018-19, hasn’t pitched in the bigs this season.

I guess the Drury is out. No more deliberations for today. But the judge is still sitting.

Addition by subtraction. I thought Drury would be useful when they got him, but that experiment was overdue to end.

Glad it’s him and not Espinal. Hoping this move leads to more at bats against lefties for Tellez.

Drury should have been non tendered after last season. In a full season hes making $2 mil. Seems minimal, but letting him and Shoemaker go would have given them $6 mil to spend elsewhere in FA or trade market. Hell, don’t sign Shaw and thats a clean $10 sheets to spend!!!

If your a Tor fan this is probably worth popping a beer out the fridge over

Really like the direction Tor is heading lets just hope Pearson and Bichette are okay to start 2021

Biggio looks like a ballplayer (love the eye) Teoscar looking like a solid DH, and Ryu a worthwhile gamble – I expect them to be major players in the big 2022 Fa class and contend for the AL east crown that year possibly

Yep. Totally. Montoyo tried to lose tonight. Sleepy Bill Burns and Abe Attel got to him.

Drury had potential but he is a recent graduate of the Chris Davis Batting Average university

Well Grich just saved Charlie . Another move from the grand tactician that could have cost us !

Anyone want to explain to me how PH Voggie for Jansen made any sense?

Knowing that if he got out you’d have no choice but start Olympic 100m Gold Medalist McGuire at 2nd in the 10th.

Grichuk’s entire career is built off feasting against Baltimore. His jersey will retire in Camden.

The pinch decision made no sense. An excuse to give him an at bat. Not thought out well.

The move to drop Drury was long overdue maybe a year overdue BUT he has an option and with the opportunities he got they must love him so I think they will bring him back for a repeat of the same in the near future..

Drury was one of those high end prospects that I was wishing the Braves would go grab years ago. A situation where I was definitely wrong as it never clicked for him. A small defense for him: he got tossed around and called up and down a good bit during those important years. :/ that messes with kids sometimes

I always liked Drury, too bad he couldn’t put it together. Pannone should have been outrighted years ago.

Tell me why is Derek Fisher on this team and Anthony Alford released?
