Braves Activate Will Smith, Designate Scott Schebler

By Jeff Todd | August 6, 2020 at 12:04pm CDT

The Braves have activated lefty Will Smith, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman tweets. He had not yet pitched this year due to a prior coronavirus infection.

Recently acquired outfielder Scott Schebler was designated for assignment to open 40-man and active roster space. The organization also optioned righty Chad Sobotka and catcher Alex Jackson to trim down to 28 men on the active roster.

Smith inked a three-year deal over the winter after serving as the Giants’ closer. He’ll likely function in a setup role in Atlanta, pitching in front of fellow former San Francisco 9th-inning man Mark Melancon.

Schebler, 29, recorded a lone plate appearance with the Braves before being cut loose. He logged a thirty homer campaign with the Reds, so power isn’t in short supply, but he has not been a consistent on-base threat and ran out of chances in Cincinnati.

Designated Schieber or whatever his name is and optioned Chad and Alex.

Some in the organization thought he’d be activated yesterday. Instead I guess he pulled up to the house about 7 or 8.

Can probably get him for just a waiver claim.

It’s just an observation. I don’t know why you idiots always assume it’s a complaint when someone points something out. I’m going to assume the 1996 by your name is when you were born. Gen z isn’t exactly one of the smart/tolerable generations of todays society, so that isn’t surprising.

Guy on the Internet: “Gen z isn’t smart”

Also Guy on the Internet: generalizes about millions of people based on one person who might not even be a member of the group

          Clown comment, bro

Based on my experience since we are generalizing, Gen Z is very smart. I have seen my kids and all of their friends growing up and I feel pretty good about the future.

I’ll back the Gen Z comment. They’re young. Life lessons lead to knowledge and wisdom. They will get there.

Padres should acquire Schebler to be DH and 4th OF.

They’ve received very little production from Naylor, Almonte, etc. Might as well.

I’d prefer Corey Dickerson being the primary trade candidate to handle DH duties, but Schebler is my second choice for cheapest option to get.

The highest-paid Marlin — you know they’re interested. May even come with a few ventilators.

They’re messing up their opportunity to see Jack Leiter get drafted by one of his dad’s old teams.

        The 1st place Marlins?

At this point they are probably buyers not sellers in what may be their best opp in a while to make some noise later

I think they’ll work him in. The bullpen has been so lights out I wouldn’t mess with it right now. I can honestly seem him being the first guy out of the pen in the 5th or 6th inning.

Braves look really good aside from their starting rotation.

It’s slowly improving. If the ball hadn’t popped out of Ender’s glove in the 5th inning, Newcomb would’ve gone 5 innings with one run. Touki no runs in 4 innings. Wright no runs in 3.1 innings in his last start (I know, not that impressive and he had a lot of runners, but he got dp gb’s when he needed them and it was a step forward).

Hopefully all three of these guys can continue moving forward. With how good and deep the Braves bullpen is their starters really need to only go five innings with three runs given up and they’ll be fine.

Briffle’s right. He waited to say anything until the Braves were 5 games in and 1 game under .500 and now he’s as absent as a dead beat dad. But he’ll show up again if the Braves lose 3 in a row or if Acuna goes 2 out of 10 AB’s.

Will Smith will be to the Braves, what Josh Hader is to the Brewers.
He’ll pitch the toughest inning on relief, if it’s the 9th, then he’ll close.
