Cubs Release Derek Dietrich

By Mark Polishuk | August 9, 2020 at 11:20am CDT

The Cubs announced that utilityman Derek Dietrich has been released so that Dietrich can explore a Major League opportunity with another club.  (MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian was among those to report the news.)

Dietrich signed a minor league deal with Chicago just prior to the July opener, and only three days after the Reds released him from another minors contract.  Dietrich didn’t receive a call-up to the Cubs’ active roster, and it’s fair to assume that he wasn’t in the team’s plans in the near future, which led to their granting his request for a release.  With Dietrich’s track record of multi-positional versatility and a career 107 OPS+, any number of teams could have their eye on him for regular big league duty.

Dietrich spent his first six seasons with the Marlins before playing with the Reds in a somewhat unusual 2019 season.  He hit a career-best 19 homers and posted a career-best .462 slugging percentage over 306 plate appearances, though he batted only .187.  Much of Dietrich’s 2019 production was built around an incredible 68-PA stretch in May, as Dietrich exploded to hit .293/.397/.931 and 12 home runs.

In related news he’ll sign with the Reds today and be in uniform tomorrow. Moose is out and they need left-handed power

BP power? Dude can’t hit a breaking ball. I’d rather see Farmer or anyone else on the team today get the ABs. DD is done.

I kind of want to see Texas go after him, because I think that Odor’s time is (finally) running out with the club. If Dietrich can tap into whatever made him a monster for a few months last season, that would help our 2nd base situation. Pair him and the right handed Solak, and maybe you have something. Or bench him and platoon Tejeda and Solak. Either way, we need Odor gone, he has definatley over-stayed his welcome.

Sure seems like it. He has regressed a lot. How come he still bats in prime spots? I believe yesterday he was hitting cleanup.

I am still not sure. They either bat him 3rd or 5th even though he hasn’t made contact with a ball since nam’. Though it’s probably because Jon Daniels extended him on that big contract, and he doesn’t want to bite the bullet and move on.

He should just ask how the Angels do it so often lol. Upton may be the next one if he doesn’t turn it around. He is unplayable right now as well

An above average player for a couple of years, then an average player 2016-19. It was worth a look if there were concerns about depth, esp at 2B.

I think he would fit well on a lot of teams. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Yankees give him a shot (LF) and his lower hitting slot may take some pressure off him. I’ve always liked this guy and he’s got great potential still, he’s athletic, and he’s somewhat a utility player (2b, 3b, & LF).
