Padres Select Abraham Almonte

By Jeff Todd | August 3, 2020 at 4:36pm CDT

The Padres have selected the contract of outfielder Abraham Almonte, as Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune was among those to cover on Twitter. He’ll take the active roster spot of righty Jerad Eickhoff, who was optioned down.

More to come …

Why??? What was the point of calling up Eickhoff and not even use him. I believe the Padres need another reliever than an outfielder right now

And of course bypass Taylor Trammell again

    Stop the service time games

Season isn’t going to finish so why waste a year of service time? It’d be incredibly stupid to bring him up this season.

They’ve passed the threshold for service time already, so they could bring Trammel up now and he would not accrue a full year of service time. Exactly why the Angels just called up Jo Adell.

          Thank you.

Trammell is almost 23. It’s just silly at this point

Probably not calling him up because he was barely a league average hitter at AA last year. He just isn’t ready yet in any way.

Meanwhile other teams are bringing up prospects. Adell is being brought up today. They gained another year with Trammell waiting as long as they did already.

        It’s a joke

Padres have never played service time games. Look at the last 3 seasons. Tatis, Paddack, Lucchesi, etc.

Trammell has already missed enough of the major league season to get the extra year of control anyway.

Perhaps but are you willing to pay tammell super 2 status?

Exactly. Why bring him up this year and risk super 2? It’s a meaningless season, and they could even wait a little bit into next year and gain another year on him if they were feeling ballsy enough and didn’t NEED him on the roster.

If I had to guess, I’d venture that the timeline for calling up Trammell coincides with the end of Tommy Pham’s contract after the 2021 season, That’s if all goes according to plan,

There’s also just no need to call Trammel up for this specific roster spot. There’s like 5 other OFs on the team and then when Hosmer’s stomach issues are resolved in a few days he would just go back to the alternate training site.

If anything it should have been Torrens since he a C/1B is more useful in this slot than a 6th OF.

Why did the Padres trade so many MLB OF’s in the offseason if their first call up is Almonte? They have to have better depth than this in their stacked minor league system, right?

It’s because the Padres have one of the most overrated minor league system in all of sports and I’m as big of a fan as there is.

Why pay guys like Renfroe, Reyes, Jankowski, etc millions when you can pay Almonte league minimum.

Renfroe and Reyes are giving the Rays and Indians pretty dismal production so far.

If they want Almonte to be like their 5th OF because of the expanded rosters, even though that doesn’t really move the needle at all for me it’s not like he’s a terrible depth option.

What I don’t get about this situation is why he’s starting at DH tonight. He’s got a career OPS of .671 and a wRC+ of 81, so clearly a he’s a below average hitter. He’s also 31 and a known commodity, it’s not like they’re waiting for him to breakout/develop.

Understandable for him to be a reserve, but really there’s no need to call him up and immediately plug him into the lineup.

Over the course of his career he hits righties better than lefties

      Vs righties he’s .243/.306/.397

More specifically, he’s hit .263/.323/.413 against right handed starters. They’re facing Buehler tonight.

They’re trying to find production from the DH position.

If Hosmer was healthy it’d be him or Cronenworth at DH.

Naylor hasn’t hit and only other person I’d say give a shot over Almonte is Vosler who I thought had a good spring

The splits help justify it some, but that career OBP is still just not good. I’d rather they get Greg Garcia in the lineup, he’s a career .259/.370/.358 against RHP.

That being said, I get that its sort of a lose /lose for them right now because Cronenworth is playing 1B while Hosmer is out and Profar isn’t producing much at all, so you have a side of the infield that is some combo of Profar/Cronenworth/Garcia and then DHing whoever isn’t starting isn’t like a substantial upgrade because that just means you have all 3 in the lineup.

Really Naylor is the one who should be stepping up but you’re right, he’s just not performing well enough. Its crazy that with Hosmer out he’s not even playing well enough/they don’t have confidence in him to take either the 1B reps or the DH spot, because he should be blocked and this like the perfect opportunity for him to actually get consistent playing time and he’s missing out on it.

Not 100% sure but I think Garcia can play INF and OF

Almonte isn’t able to play INF

So I get starting him at DH over Garcia cause Garcia is really your only bench lefty who can play all over the field.

Vosler can play 3B 1B and corner OF spots probably

That seems to be why Tingler uses primarily OFs as his DH.

They’ve got OF options. Infield is limited especially in injury or defensive replacement situations.

Garcia is pretty much only an INF, although I think they have stuck him in LF once or twice in an emergency type situation. Naylor can play 1B, LF, RF, so with Garcia able to play 2B, 3B, SS, between the two of them you could pretty much move the other pieces around to cover any position with someone who is LH off the bench.

Padres INF is also really versatile with Cronenworth and Garcia each being able to play basically everywhere. I think at every INF position they have 3+ guys who could competently play defense if necessary. For example at. SS after Tatis, if you had to, Garcia, Cronenworth, Machado and Profar all have experience playing SS, which is kind of remarkable that they have that many options. I think Tingler goes with OFs as DH mostly because the OFs available to him are theoretically better hitters, but there is pretty much depth to cover the INF if necessary.

Also Vosler just got to the alternate training site today. Maybe he’s already in playing shape and is ready, but they probably want him to get ramped up before they would actually add him to the active roster.
